EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, CYCLE A | AUGUST 2, 2020

By Will Wright
I spent a week in Haiti on a mission trip and was struck at Mass by how well everyone dressed, both men and
women. These people had little to nothing materially, but they showed clearly where they placed priority.
The men wore pants in the hot humid Caribbean weather. The women wore modest dresses and had their
shoulders covered. It was a testament to the life of these joy-filled disciples of Christ.
What we wear to Sunday Mass matters. When we go to the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we are entering
into a sacred and transcendent reality. On Sunday, this occasion takes on a significantly special dimension.
This is true in tow ways: sacrifice and supper.
First and foremost, the Mass is the presentation, once again, of the one Sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Calvary.
As the priest says the words of Christ at consecration, we become present at the Last Supper and we are at
the foot of the cross. How you hold yourself, what you choose to wear, and how you participate all speaks to
whether you are acknowledging this reality or not.
Second, the Mass is a foretaste of the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. The Mass has a wedding character. When
we receive our Blessed Lord in the Eucharist, we even use wedding language. We say, “Amen,” which means,
“yes,” “so be it,” and “I believe,” but it also means, “I do.” Mass is like a wedding. Would you dress better for
a wedding than for Sunday Mass? Should you dress better?
Heaven meets Earth in a real way. We take part in the action of the Mystical Body of Christ and see, hear,
smell, taste, and touch the meeting of Heaven and Earth. Now, think about how you dress for Mass. Are you
dressed appropriately for the kneeling at the foot of the Cross where our redemption was won and His saving
Blood is offered for us? Are you dressed appropriately for the Lamb’s Supper, the great Wedding Feast
where Heaven and Earth kiss?
Chances are you, or someone you know, could dress for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass appropriately. We
need to make a statement without opening our mouths. Is Mass important or not? Is the Eucharist the Body,
Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ or not?
To match the occasion, men out to wear dress shoes, slacks, a dress shirt, a tie, and maybe even a sports coat
or suit coat (air temperature permitting) to Sunday Mass. They should not wear t-shirts or sport’s jerseys.
Wearing a jersey to Mass says to every single person in attendance, and to God, that you care more about
the game later in the day than the Mass. Shorts are never acceptable at
the Sunday Mass for men. It’s time for us all, myself included, to step up.
The consensus for women is: modest tops, dressed, skirts, or pants are all
great. Jeans are not appropriate, as they are casual. Shoulders ought to be
covered, and no plunging necklines. Chapel veils are also a possibility,
though they are optional. These are worn in the presence of our
Eucharistic Lord.
In all things: modesty, reverence, solemnity, and remember...it’s a joyous
occasion! Get Dressed up!

NINETEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
1st Reading: 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a
Psalm: 85:9-14
2nd Reading: Romans 9:1-5
Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33
In our family life we can sometimes hear echoes of the disciples' excuses: “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Sometimes this echo is heard from children squabbling about the last piece of cake. Sometimes it is heard in our concern about the limits of the family's income or possessions. Sometimes this echo is heard in our complaints about the seemingly endless demands for our time and attention. Jesus understood these feelings and taught us to see beyond our limitations. Jesus modeled for us a compassion that reaches out to others, even when we would rather withdraw into ourselves. Jesus taught us that God blesses compassion offered to others with his grace. Today's Gospel reminds us that with God there is not only enough, there is an abundance! Talk together about some of the stresses and demands for time and attention that your family members might feel. Acknowledge that we sometimes have to make difficult choices about how to use our time, talents, and treasure. Then read together today's Gospel, Matthew 14:13-21. Notice how much Jesus cared for the crowds, healing the sick even though he wanted to withdraw to a quiet place. Notice how the disciples responded to Jesus' instruction to feed the crowd; they noted their limited supply of food. Jesus blessed this limited supply of food, and it was enough to feed the entire crowd, more than 5,000 people, and there were leftovers! Pray together that Jesus will grant us compassion like his so that we will offer whatever we have to others with compassion and generosity. Pray together today's Psalm, Psalm 145, or the Lord's Prayer.
