One of his favorite stories of his prospecting days was walking out of a general store one day when he found a 20-dollar gold piece lying in the dust of the street. He never spent it because he liked to show it when he told the story of “the easiest $20 I ever made.” He would be quick to tell you, however, that while that $20 was the easiest money he ever made, it did him no practical good since he never spent it. Remember - money is only good as a medium of exchange. By far his greater fortune was earned by hard work ... “elbow grease” we used to call it. Very little gold was found lying on top of the ground or even dredged from a creek bed. It was found in veins hidden beneath the surface of the earth. When considering the priceless treasure of God’s Word ... there are some truths that lie on the surface and are easy to find. The wonder of Bible study, however, is that the most valuable pieces of spiritual gold are those that are found in arduous study. After James wrote of the futility of being only a hearer of the word, he then said: “But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (1:25). The phrase “looks into” comes from a Greek expression that means “one who stoops down and examines closely.” Let me ask: When was the last time you mined for gold? Visitors Welcome -R. Medlin

MINING FOR GOLD

I read about a man in the 1800s who made his living as a prospector. One of his

favorite stories of his prospecting days was walking out of a general store one day when he

found a 20-dollar gold piece lying in the dust of the street. He never spent it because he liked

to show it when he told the story of “the easiest $20 I ever made.”

He would be quick to tell you, however, that while that $20 was the easiest money he

ever made, it did him no practical good since he never spent it. Remember - money is only

good as a medium of exchange.

By far his greater fortune was earned by hard work ... “elbow grease” we used to call it.

Very little gold was found lying on top of the ground or even dredged from a creek bed. It was

found in veins hidden beneath the surface of the earth.

When considering the priceless treasure of God’s Word ... there are some truths that lie

on the surface and are easy to find. The wonder of Bible study, however, is that the most

valuable pieces of spiritual gold are those that are found in arduous study.

After James wrote of the futility of being only a hearer of the word, he then said: “But he

who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a

doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (1:25). The phrase “looks into” comes

from a Greek expression that means “one who stoops down and examines closely.”

Let me ask: When was the last time you mined for gold?
