From the PresidentBY ASHLEY ROSE-NALIN
I want to take a brief break from talking about TAPS Long Range Plan and take some time to introduce myself and how I lucked in the surveying profession.
I know a lot of you know me, know of me, or have noticed me because I don’t look like most of you – I’m a lot younger (I bet you thought I was going to say something else).
I don’t come from a surveying family. My dad is a truck driver and my mom a hairstylist, but I grew up living with my grandparents; they were a janitor (sanitation engineer, when my grandpa was telling stories about going to tidy bowl college) and a legal secretary. I was a good student when I was young and seemed to have a knack for and enjoyed math. Since I liked math and have never been extremely extroverted, I figured being an engineer seemed like a good fit. You don’t put a lot of thought into those things when you are young, or at least I didn’t. Thankfully, I’ve had a lot of luck and bless-ings in my life.
I grew up in Indiana, and as my luck would have it, Indiana has this pretty good state college that maybe you’ve heard of – Purdue University. I applied but didn’t get into the College of Engineering. I was accepted into Building Construction Management, but I wasn’t sure that was for me, so I ended up in the Undergraduate Studies Program where I could take most of the engi-neering courses that would be needed to try to transfer into the engineering program. I eventually worked my way into the School of Civil Engineering where all the students take an introductory class that talks about the different emphasis areas within the civil program. During one of those classes, they talked about a dual degree opportunity in Land Surveying and Geomatics Engineering and Civil Engineering. I think I may have been taking the Introductory Land Surveying Course at the time as well.
I thought that was an interesting concept – two degrees in five years – but I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend the
extra money for an additional year of college because finances were pretty tight. I decided that before I com-mitted to an extra year of college I wanted to learn more about surveying. I called some surveying firms in my hometown to see if they hired summer help, and again as luck would have it, I had three offers for summer employment. I sometimes wonder if they just thought I was crazy and it might be good entertainment for a summer. Whatever the reason, I was grateful for the opportunity!
That was actually my first job not working on our little cattle farm with my dad. That first summer hooked me. I did a lot of construction layout that first summer and a little bit of boundary surveying, and I loved it. I grew up working outside, and this combined my love of the outdoors with my love of math and solving technical problems.
I really enjoyed the balance of going to college and then getting that summer field experience. It helped me learn to apply what I was learning. The summer before my last year of college, I landed a summer position with a company in Indianapolis that also had a branch office at Purdue. I was able to work part time at their branch office learning how to read and understand title commit-ments for ALTA/ACSM (at that time) Land Title Surveys while completing my fifth year of college.
After college, I followed a fella to Tennessee and got married. As luck would have it once again, that com-pany I worked part time for during my fifth year of col-lege had recently acquired a surveying firm in Nashville, so they offered me a position in that office. Fast forward 12+ years and few position changes later, and I some-how have recently ended up as a Program Manager for the U.S. Air Force.

Everyone knows that drone surveys are faster and safer, but are they really more accurate?
UAV mapping technology has made some substantial strides within the past decade and now encompasses a huge industry. From small, mobile “toys” to hardy, military-grade equipment, drones are now used through-out many sectors and for many purposes. How can you compare drone survey accuracy to the accuracy of older surveying methods?
What Does “Accuracy” Mean? When it comes to land surveying, accuracy can mean multiple things. As an example, older photogrammetric technology is occasionally said to have higher resolu-tion because it takes a series of high-resolution photos and creates a 3D plane from these photos. However, this great level of resolution isn’t always meaningful because it doesn’t necessarily correlate to useful 3D point data. Comparatively, advanced LiDAR technology may not have the same pixel size, but contains many times the amount of useful topological data.
Rather than using resolution or pixels, accuracy in a ground survey is usually associated with the accuracy to which the 3D data can simulate the real-world – in other words, how accurate the measurements are, both absolute and relative to the surroundings and the site itself. This is understandably more complex; while anyone can say that you can create scans of a specific resolution, it requires a lot of real-world data to say that you create scans of a specific level of accuracy.
How Do Drones Determine Their Position?Drones can scan the ground with highly precise tech-nologies such as LiDAR. These technologies send out hundreds of thousands of pulses per second to map topological differences relative to each other, contribut-ing to a very high degree of relative accuracy. However, absolute accuracy is determined using GPS. GPS isn’t always able to produce a completely accurate relative position, and consequently, further data analysis is often required.
This data analysis is often supported through the use of ground control points. Ground control points create
fixed and known points that the drones can use to posi-tion themselves and continually correct their own posi-tioning. Understandably, these ground control points must also be carefully positioned for the right level of accuracy.
Drones may be adversely impacted by things such as weather conditions, terrain profiles, and, of course, the drone hardware. Hardware matters when hiring a drone surveying company, as the more advanced the UAV mapping hardware is, the less likely the drones are to be influenced by things such as poor weather condi-tions and difficult terrain profiles.
How is the Accuracy of Drones Tested?Drone survey accuracy is tested through margins of error when drone data results are compared to real-world information and conventional surveying methods. By testing drone accuracy against known sets of data, operators and surveyors can determine how accurate the drones are as a whole. From there, they can pub-lish how accurate their surveys are. The accuracy level must be reproducible to be claimed. When accuracy is reported for a drone survey, it is reported using the exact same accuracy measurements as any other type of surveying. A drone survey that boasts 2 CM accu-racy will be as accurate as another type of survey that boasts 2 CM accuracy.
Best-in-class UAV mapping technologies can currently resolve surveying sites to 1 CM of accuracy. This accu-racy is extremely competitive with other technical mod-els and is supported through the use of careful real-world analysis and testing. While drone survey accu-racy can be influenced through a number of factors, the right drone surveying company can carefully control these factors and create reliable, reproducible results.

From the President, cont. from p. 3
My life has put me in unexpected places, but I’ve been truly blessed that things seem to work themselves out even in those moments of uncer-tainty. I do find myself wanting to work back towards those day-to-day activities of boundary surveying and topographic data collection. Maybe someday – who knows? For now, I am thankful to maintain my licensure and membership in TAPS where I get to listen to all your surveying experi-ences, share some of my own, and try to tell everyone who will listen about land surveying and all the blessings that knowledge base has brought my way. I’m also thankful to serve and give back to this profes-sion and help with promoting that Long Range Plan to assist in sustain-ing and growing the land surveying profession.
