  • Overview of the IECCatechetical Facilitators' GuideCHRIST in You, our Hope of Glory ( Colossians I:27 )

Gearing for the 2016 International Eucharistic Congressin Cebu is in full swing. The preparatory period is marked bytwo important endeavors: " a thorough catechesis, adapted tothe capacity of different groups , about the Eucharist, especiallyas the mystery of Christ living and working in the church; and amore active preparation in the liturgy, in order to encourage areverent hearing of the Word of God and the spirit of mutuallove and community." ( Paul VI, Holy Communion and devotionto the Eucharistic Mystery outside the Mass, 1973)

Following the direction of the Pontifical Council forInternational Eucharistrc Congress, the Permanent Committeefor International Eucharistic Congresses solicited the assistanceof various catechetical groups spearheaded by the EpiscopalCommission in Catechesis and Catholic Education. Catechistsfrom schools of the Catholic Educational Association of thePhilippines, the Catechetical Foundation of the Archdiocese ofManila (CFAM) and catechetical centers were invited to study, reflect and collaborate in the formulation of the facilitators'guide for the use of the catechists who are called to catechizevarious age groupings namely: children (9-12 years old), youth(13-24 years old) and adults.

    The guide objectives are :

    A. To assist catechists in their effort to facilitate cateche-sis on the Eucharist geared towards the celebration ofIEC 2016 with the theme :" CHRiST in You, our Hopeof Glory. The Eucharist : Source and Goal of the ChurchMission.

    B. To renew the faith of people , in particular the love forthe Eucharistic Celebration and thus, challenge them toparticipate more actively in Church life as missionarydisciples;

    C. To challenge Filipino faithful to live a Eucharistic spiri-tuality that will help transform Philippine society andChurch.

    I

The sources for the guide are :A. A Theological and Pastoral reflections in preparation for

the 51't International Eucharistic Congress Cebu, Philip-pines, 24-31 January 2016.

The guide in brief. It is to be recalled that the catechetical prin-ciples identified by the National Catechetical Directory of thePhilippines (NCDP,2007) are : fidelity to God (integration), fi-delity to the human person (inculturation) and fidelity to theChurch ( ecclesial forming ). On the end, these "learning ex-periences" should lead people to a closer relationship withJesus in the Church, and to a greater understanding of theWord of God in the context of Asian Philippines realities.

The Facilitators'Guide for Children. Children are as muchpart of the Church as adults. The participation of children in theliturgical celebration enables them to be "Missionary Disci-ples" in their own right, Masses for Children are a Sunday oc-currence in the apostolate of Parishes. The catechesis for chil-dren will cultivate the love for Eucharistic celebration and fordevotion to the Blessed Sacrament through regular visits.

The facilitators'guide highlight the following :

    1. THE EUCHARIST: CHRIST,S WORK OF REDEMPTIONREALIZED

2, THE EUCHARISTAS A SACRAMENT OF LOVE3. THE EUCHARIST : THE SOURCE AND GOAL OF DIA-

The catechist should take note through a series of"learnings" the unique feature of IEC 2016 as it bears the AsianPhilippines flavor. This is "fertile ground" of catechesis. Incul-turating and inter culturating (dialogue with various Asian cul-tures and even various Philippine cultures) is a component ofthese modules. Creative imagination is the call to every cate-chist to make these guide come "alive".

These facilitators' guide converge to that point where allcatechetical endeavors are encounters with Jesus in the com-munity of believers drawn to involvement in the Church.

    THE EUCHARITT:CHRI'T'' WORK OF

    REDEMPTIONREALIZED

    43

  • OBJECTIVES :

At the end of this module the children would:

    . understand that the Paschal Mystery is Jesus Christ'spassion, death, resurrection and ascension-the ulti-mate event of dying and rising, of death and new life;

. be able to face the struggles and sufferings of life, toovercome them, and to be signs of hope in the home, school, parish and community; and

. be faithful in receiving Christ in the Eucharist and beable to motivate other children to go to Jesus and tolove and receive Him in the Eucharist.

    CONTEXT :

In life one experiences darkness and light , growth and loss, dying and rising, ups and downs, pains and gains, joys andsadness, life and death as one goes through the different sea-sons or stages of life.

At these different stages, what is important is how one is ableto go through and beyond them.

    a) Pagtawid sa kalye / crossing the street is going from oneside of the road to another. Children are happy and feel securecrossing the street if they are accompanied by adults like theirparents or police officers.

    b) Children also experience pagtawid/going beyond in their stu-dies. There is that pagtawid/moving from one grading periodto another and from one grade level to the next. This kind ofpagtawid/going beyond is not easy as it takes hours spentreading, analyzing and internalizing lessons to be able to passthe subject .

Pagtawid is an experience of passing over/going beyond pains, sufferings, struggles and difficulties towards victory and suc-cess for as the saying goes: "No pain , no gain".

    5

In the Old Testament, in the life of the Israelites, God helpedthem pass from slavery to freedom in the promised land.

Jesus himself, through His passion, death and resurrectionshowed us how to pass (paano ang pagtawid) through strug-gles and difficulties towards victory,

WORD OF GOD : Colossians L=24-29

" The mystery has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now manifested to God's people: it is Christ in you, thehope of glory."

DOCTRINE : The Paschal Mystery of Christ-His passion, death and resurrection-is the cen-tral cause of Christ's work of redemption.

It was "by dying that He has destroyed our death, and by risingthat He has restored our life." By the mystery of His dying andrising Christ has indeed become our hope of glory. (rEC BasicText, II- THE EUCHARIST: CHRIST,S WORK OF REDEMPNON REALIZED;A. "The Mystery ...Christ in You, the hope of g/ory")

MORAL : The Mystery (Christ's work of re-demption) has to be proclaimed. We are allcalled to bring Christ and His Gospel as hopeto the people.

This is the good news that brings hope to the people: "TheMystery has to be proclaimed unceasingly so that all may re-ceive Christ and all may be presented to Christ (Ct col 1:28).Paul took upon himself the mission that Christ sent his apostlesto do: "that by preaching the gospel to every creature theymight proclaim that the Son of God, by his death and resurrec-tion, had freed us from the power of Satan and from death andbrought us into the kingdom of the Father". (rEC Basic Text,II. THE EUCHARIST: CHRIST,S WORK OF REDEMPTION REALIZED; B. TheMystery proclaimed...that a// may receive Christ) The Cross is the symbolof Christ's Paschal Mystery (dying to rise to new life) and Chris-tian Discipleship: "Whoever wishes to come after me mustdeny himself, take up his cross each day and follow me.

    6

  • For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoeverloses his life for my sake will find it'i (Catechism for Filipino catholiss97)

The Eucharist teaches us to bravely confront even painfulmemories. For in every dark memory/ we see the action ofGod transforming night of betrayals into dawn of reconciliation(IX FABC Final Document Living the Eucharist in Asia , 2009 ;D. THE EUCHA'RISTIC PRAYER l.The Institution Narative: From Betrayal to the Sacrifice of9elf-Giving and Seruice)

WORSHIP : In the Eucharist, Christ work ofredemption is being realized."Christ is always present in his Church, especnlly in her liturgi-cal celebrations." fn the Eucharist, he is present to continuallybring people to communion with himself and to fellowship withone another. In the person of the minister, in their gatheringtogether, in the proclamation of the Word, and in the Eucha-ristic species of Bread and Wing Christ continues to unite, toforgive, to teach, to reconcilg to offer himself for our redemp-tion, and thereforq to give life. It is precise/y for this that heinstituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood-to bethe embodiment and realization of the plan of salvation thatculmlnated in the sacrifice of the Cross, to be a living memorialof his saving death and resurrection.(IEC-Basic Text II. THE EUCHA-RIST: CHRIST WORK OF REDEMPTION REALIZED; C. The Eucharist: Christpresent among us)

The Eucharist is the memorial of His Paschal Mystery. In theEucharist, the Death and Resurrection of Christ are not iustremembered, but effectively proclaimed and made present.(Catechism for Fi/ipino Catholics 1690)

    FAITH RESPONSE :

    1. Think about your own life. What events of dying or risinghave you experienced today? This week? This year? Reflecton those experiences in light of the event of Jesus Christ'spassion, death, resurrection and ascension.

    2. Compose a short prayer highlighting those experiences.

    3. How can you lead to Jesus, a friend who is alsoexperiencing struggles and diffrculties in life?

    'ACRAMENT OF LOVE

    I

  • OBJECTIVES :

At the end of this module the children would:

    . realize that Jesus is truly present-body and bloodunder the appearances of bread and wine in theEucharist;

    . appreciate that in the Eucharist they are all sent aslittle missionaries;

. feel the need to serue others; and

. in a small way, support financially the work of missionand pray for missionaries.

    CONTEXT :

How are you affected , when you see street children beggingfor food? Children whp do not go to school? Children affectedby different calamities...etc ?

Have you experienced helping victims of calamities in yourcommunity? What was your feeling while you were helpingothers? Who do you think inspired you to help? Or what in-spired you?

There is so much more going on in the world everyday otherthan what we hear, see or read in the news and what happe-nings in our community every day. There is Joy in serving.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ continues tostrengthen us with His life, and united with His Own, we areable to offer worship acceptable to the Father and also to serueothers with joy.

    WORD OF GOD :Matthew 26=L7-3O

"Take and eat; this is my body.""This r's my blood of the covenant, which is poured out formany for the forgiveness of sins."

Jesus is inviting us to take and eat His body, drink Hisblood ...Jesus said: He who feeds on My flesh and drinksMy blood has life eternaland I will raise him up on the lastday. For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink.

    9

The man who feeds on My flesh and drinks My bloodremains in Me and I in him...

John L7:21"Father, may they be one as you and I are one.

John 13:34'A new commandment I give to you, that you love oneanother: just as I have loved you, you also are to love oneanother."

DOCTRINE : Jesus is truly present-body andblood, under the appearances of bread andWine in the EUChafiSt. (Catechism of the catholic Church 1374)Everytime the Euchanst is celebrated, Christ is "really presentin the assembly itself, in the person of the minister, in His Wordand under the Euchanstic species." (cFC 1722)

It is by the conversion of the bread and wine into Chnstb bodyand blood ( in the consecration ) that Christ becomes presentin this sacrament. ( CCC 1377 )The Church Fathers strongly affirmed the faith of the Church inthe effrcacy of the Word of Christ and of the action of the HolySpirit to bring about this conversion. GCC 1375)

MORAL : In the Eucharist we are beingchanged by Jesus (transformed) and we aresent to others to help them know and loveHim.

"He who eats Me will live because of Me" (Jn 6:57). Thesewords of Jesus make us realhe how the mystery "believed" and'telebrated" contains an innate power making it the principle ofnew life within us and the form of our Christian existence. Byreceiving the body and blood of Jesus Christ we become sha-rers in the divine life in an ever more adult and conscious way. Here toq we can apply Saint Augustine's words, inhis Confessions, about the eternal Logos as the food of oursouls, Stressing the mysterious nature of this food, Augustineimagines the Lord saying to him:

    10

  • 'T Am the food of grown men; grow, and you shall feed uponMe; nor shall you change Me, like the food of your flesh, intoyourself, but you shall fu changed into Me." It is not theEucharistic food that is changed into us, but rather we who aremysteriously transformed by it. Christ nourishes us by uni-ting us to Himself; 'He draws us into Him'self." Tsacramentum Caritatis No. 70)

'A new commandment I give to you, that you love oneanother, even as I have loved you, that you also love oneanother," ltohn 13:341

"Eucharist as a sacrament of lovg a sign of unity, a bond ofcharity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumeQ themind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is givento tts," ( ccc 1323)

The personal presence,of Christ in the Eucharist is dynamb andlasting- "effective signs" of His love for us and inviting us torespond in love. Grc rz+)WORSHIP : For the Eucharist to become thesacrament of Christ's love, effective sign ofunity and bond of charity, the Holy Spirit is in-voked upon the bread and wine so that theymay become the Body and Blood of Christ(consecratory epiclesis). A little later in thecelebration the same Holy Spirit is invoked onthe assembly so that they may become "onebody, one spirit in Christ" (communion epicle-sis)So great indeed is this mystery! By the action of the Holy Spirit, the fruits of the earth and work of human hands are trans-formed to become life-giving bread and spiritual drink. By theaction of the same Holy Spirit, those who eat and drink of theBody and Blood of Christ are transformed into the one Body ofChrist. They are then sent forth to transform theh families, their places of worlg the society and the world.

    lt

The Eucharist transforms the assembled community into "acommunrbn of lifg charity and truth" in order to become "aninstrument for the redemption of all and as the light of theworld and the salt of the earth'i

For in the Eucharisl "the one whom the Father has sent to doHis will (cf. tn 5:36-38; 6:38-40; 7:16-18) draws us to Himself andmakes us part of His life and mission'i QECBasiqTextIII.THEETJCHARIST SOURCE AND GOAL OF THE CHURCHS MISSION; A. FAITH RESPONSE :

    1. Do you really believe that Jesus t's present in theEucharist?

    2. What does "to be on mission for God at home, atschool, in community" mean?

    3. How can you financially support World Mr'ssbn Sunday?

  • OBJECTIVES :

At the end of thr's module the children would:

know that the Eucharist is unique experience ofdnlogue with Jesus;participate joyfully at every Eucharistic celebration;be able to respond lovingly to what God is telling them;andbe challenged to be a member of the ministry of theWord (ex. Being a ledor or commentator, altar seruer, etc.)

    CONTEXT :

The importance of dialogue/communication in a relationship.... Children relate/dialogue with their parents, siblings,

teachers and fiiends.. Where do they usually relate/dialogue with their

family?. How and why do they relate/dialogue?. What is the effect to others of this dialogue?. What is the importance of dialogue/communication in

    daily life?

People are expected to be true to their words. Whenuttered with sincerity, words evoke trust and foster rela-tionship. In the same way, the Word of God is especiallyproclaimed at the Eucharist is meant to strengthen thebond between Christ and the Church.

When the attentiveness to the words characteristics ofAsian peoples is brought to the liturgy of the word, thenheafts would be rekindled in faith and love. (rXFABCFinatDocument Living the Eucharist rn Asia , 2009 C. LITURGY OF THE WORD 1.)Listening to the Story of lesus i.) eats of this breaQ he will live forever..."

    a

The flesh and blood of the Son of Man denote the Redeemer inthe nature of man-Christ crucified and the redemption wroughtout by him-with all the precrbus benefits of redemption, thepardon of sin, the acceptance with God, the way to the throneof grace, the promises of the covenant, and eternal life. Theseare the flesh and blood of Christ, for which was the breaking ofHr's body and the shedding of Hr's blood. They are meat anddrink for our souls. Eating His flesh and drinking His bloodmean believing in Christ and paftaking of His benefits by faith. The soul that nghtly knows its state and wants, finds whatevercan calm the conscience and promote true holiness. In theRedeemer, God is manifested in the flesh. Meditating upon thecross of Christ gives life to our repentancq lovq and gratitude. We live by Him just as our bodies live by food. We live by Him,as Head and we as branches. Because he lives we shall alsolive.

DOCTRINE : The Eucharist is a unique expe-rience of dialogue of life and love with Jesus. He is present in His Word since it is He Himself who speakswhen the Holy Scriptures are read in Church. (sacrosanctum con-ciliumT)

Our Eucharistic Celebration teaches us to be atten-tive so that we may be able to discern from themany words aroand us what word we would chooseto live by. Through the homily, the Table of the Wordcan become a school for discerning the life giving Wordfrom words that deal death. (IX FABC Finat Document Living theEucharist in Asia , 2009 C. LITURGY OF THE WORD 1.; Listening to the Storyof lesus i. Contertuafized Pastoral Implications)

MORAL : Emerging from the Eucharisticgathering, we are sent to continue and extendthis dialogue of life and salvation in the formof loving service to others.

Chnst in the Euchanst "is truly Emmanuel, God with us". Dayand night He is in our midst; He helps us to be good children,He nourishes our virtues. He called us to be like Him meek andhumble of heart. (CFC 1736)

    16

  • Christians in dialogue should be ready to offer their faith, togive an account of the hope that is within them (1 Pt 3:15) inanswer to their dialogue partners' expectations that werecreated by the dialogue. Dialogue is always in view of procla-mation and sharing of one's faith and hope in Christ. (rEC IV. rHECHURCH'S MISSION IN ASIA. MISSION- IN- DIALOGUE C. On proclamationand dialogue.- )WORSHIP : The Eucharist, source and goal ofdialogue with Jesus.

This drblogue of life and love takes on a liturgical form in theEucharist.

In the life of the Church, the Eucharist stands as both thesoarce and goal of this dialogue. By our participation in theEucharistic celebration we enter into a communion of life withthe Triune God because we are inserted into the dialogue of lifeand saluation that began in history and now perpetuated inliturgical mystery in the power of the Holy Spirit, The variouselements of the celebration engage our body, our senses, ourconsciousness and our affectivity in that dialogue which unfoldsenabling us to share in the rhythm of Christ's life offered forour salvation. By gathering and forming an assembly of wor-ship we respond to the Father's summons to be His covenantedPeople. By listening to and assimilating the Word proclaimedwe engage in a dialogue whereby the Father healq forms andenriches us with Hr's life and love, especially with the help of ahomily which on account of its Eucharistic contefi surpasses allforms of catechesis because it leads up to sacramental com-munion. (IEC Basic TexlIV THE CHURCH MISSSION IN ASIA. MISSION-IN DIALOGUE d. The Eucharistsource and goal ofdialogue)

    FAITH RESPONSE :

Do you really believe God truly speaks to you in everyEucharistic Celebration? When was the last time youexperienced this? If you missed this experience, whatmay you do so that God may really speak to you in theEucharistic Celebration ?How may we daily live up and share the Word of Godwith our family and friends ?Give a concrete action or a commitment which you canshare with your parish, especially in the Ministry of theWord.

    Toprc # aMOTHER MARY,

    THE FIR'T DI'CIPLE OFCHRI'T LEAD',

    U' TO THE EUCHARI'T

  • OBJECTIVES :

At the end of this module the children would:. understand that Mary is the Woman of the Eucharist;. identify the viftues of Mary which they would want to

follow as disciple of Jesus;. appreciate that true devotion to Mary is to glorify God

especially in the Eucharist where Mary is also present;and

. lead their families to the Eucharist.

CONTEXT :Filipinos have lots of images, stories, prayers and devotions toMary. Many children are named after Mary. The names of most Parishes are taken from the different titlesof Mary.Who is Mary for the Filipino child ?

Most of all Mary is the first of the evangelizers. When Elizabethtold her "Blessed are you who believed...", Mary replied: "Mysoul proclaims the greatness of the Lord."

Mary drew from the treasury of words that she pondered in herheart with the Spirit, proclaiming it as Good News, as Gospelfor humankind.

    WORD OF GOD : Luke 1: 46-55

My soul proclaims the greatnessof the LorQmy spirit rejoices in God my Saviorfor he has looked with favor on his lowly seruant. From this day all generations will call me blessed:the Almighty has done great things for me,and holy is His Name.He has mercy on those who fear Himin every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm,he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things,19

and the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to the help of Ht's seruant Israelfor He remembered His promise of mercy, the promse He made to our fathers,to Abraham and His children forever.

At the appointed timg Mary brought forth the Father's Sonmade flesh from her own womb. She gave us Jesus. She heldHim up before shepherds and wise men. She placed Him in oldSimeon's arms, and he knew in joy the promise of God fulfilled. Her bidding brought about the first of her Son's signs at thewedding feast in Cana. Her last words there were directed tothe seruants, "Do whatever He tells you." And she continues toaddress these words to all ages thereafter.

As her Son preached to the crowds, she took in His Words, andpondered them in her heart, to share them later with the nas-cent Church. Mother of the apostleq she was in their midstwhen the Spirit came to them in the likeness of tongues of fireon that day when the Church, empowered by the Spirit, firstproclaimed the Good News to all the world.

Thus Mary was the first to be evangelizeQ and the first of thedisciples, as well as the first Apostle. In every age from thetime of the Apostles until the end of timq she is to be presentto the evangelizing Church-the Church-in-mission. (rEC BasicTCxt, IX. MARY AND THE EUCHARIST IN THE CHURCH,S MISSION; A. MARYEXEMPUR AND MOTHER OF THE CHURCH-ON-MTSSION)

DOCTRINE : Mary is a "Woman of the Eucha-rist", who by bearing the body of Jesus in herwomb became the first "tabernacle", and theChurch who in her heaft preserves and offersto the world Christ's body and blood. 6rrt"sia duEucharistia, 55)

For to the Christian faithful at worship, Mary stands as model inlistening to the Word and taking it to heart; in prasing andthanking God who has done great favors to oneself and to therest of humankind; in bringing Christ and his gifts of joy andsalvation to all that one meets, in praying and interceding forthe needs of all, in nourishing the life of grace which one re-ceives through the sacraments,
