Save the Date for the Lenten MissionThe Parish Mission will begin on the weekend of March 22 and 23 at all the English masses and

will continue weekdays at 7:00pm until Wednesday, March 26. The retreat master will be Father JosephNoonan who is a former associate pastor at ST. Francis Borgia, and currently the pastor of St. Damien inOak Forest. Ordained in 1995, he previously served as Archdiocesan Vocation Director. Please pray for

Fr. Joe so he can help us renew our hearts and lives.

Lenten Regulations for Fasting and AbstinenceThe annual observance of Lent is the special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Through its

twofold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes both the catechumens and the faithful to celebratethe paschal mystery. Catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to prayer, are preparedthrough a spirit of repentance to renew their baptismal promises. (Ceremonial of Bishops, 249).

REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2014, and Good Friday,April 18, 2014, are days for fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. The following may be

reproduced in parish bulletins for the purpose of reminding the faithful of the regulations for fast and abstinence:ASH WEDNESDAY, March 5, 2014, and GOOD FRIDAY, April 18, 2014, are days of fast and abstinence.FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence.

FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to eachones needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.

ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Notethat when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fastand abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens shouldundertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or renewal of baptism at Easter.

Respect LifeThe following words were written by a young ladywho had an abortion, and illustrate a common themethe Church encounters in those who have hadabortions. Cases like this show the need for the effortsthe pro-life movement makes to counsel those who feelpressured to abort, and to give them alternatives: Thecounseling was only pro-abortion. No information wasgiven to me about pro-life choices or agencies at theabortion clinic. They also told me it wouldnt hurt. Itwas extremely painful. I was not told anything abouthow this would affect me for the rest of my life.Collected Pledged Goal

Pray for Cardinal Francis GeorgeTuesday, March 18, 2014. Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, is being treated at Loyola

University Medical Center in Maywood, after doctors discovered during a routine checkup late last week that he wasdehydrated. The Cardinal has been hospitalized since Friday, after he started experiencing flu-like symptoms earlier lastweek while keeping to his usual work schedule and appointments. He had gone to Loyola on Friday for his regularcheckup on his chemotherapy treatment. After his doctors discussed his symptoms, it was decided that the Cardinalwould remain at the hospital until he recovers. He is being treated with an antibiotic and is receiving intravenous fluids. He asks that people continue to pray for him as he continues to keep people in his prayers.
