P ASSING OF THE T ORCH - GIANTS’ B ARR Y BONDS NO W THIRD ON THE ALL-TIME HOME R UN LIST WITH 702 And then there were three. Six-time Most Valuable Player and single-season home run king Barry Bonds, in a career that ranks among the greatest the game has ever seen, has joined baseball’s holy trinity of home run hitters with 702 career clouts. In the history of baseball, only two players have clubbed more homers than the San Francisco left fielder, men who simply need no introduction: Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). Just months after surpassing his godfather, Willie Mays, for third on the all-time home run list, Bonds reached the storied 700 plateau on September 17, 2004 with a third inning, solo clout to left field off San Diego right-hander Jake Peavy at SBC Park. Bonds’ 2004 campaign has taken shape as one marked by historic moments. With 44 homers thus far, he has ascended to third on the all-time home run chart, established yet another Major League record with his 13th consecutive 30-homer season, and has matched Aaron’s National League standard with his eighth 40-homer campaign. In a moment sure to be forever etched upon the baseball landscape, Bonds and Mays, forever linked as godfather and godson, as two of the greatest players in baseball history, and as San Francisco Giants, became joined by a magical number that stands alone - 660. On April 12, 2004, the godson belted a 3-1 offering from Milwaukee right-hander Matt Kinney into McCovey Cove for his 660th career homer, matching the godfather for third among baseball’s immortals. The very next night, off Brewers’ righty Ben Ford, Bonds hammered clout number 661, again visiting the Cove. When that historic homer left the park, it put Mays into fourth place on the all-time home run list for the first time since June 22, 1966 - the day before the “Say Hey Kid” tied Ted Williams with his 521st career roundtripper. Over the last three years, Bonds’ performance has been nothing short of breathtaking. In 565 games since Opening Day 2001, he has hit .351 (570-for-1,625) with 480 runs, 208 HRs, 437 RBI and 739 walks (277 intentional) while posting a .559 on-base percentage and an .814 slugging mark. In that time, the charter member of baseball’s 500-homer, 500-steal club has won a batting title, helped carry his club to the 2002 World Series with a post-season record eight homers, established seven single-season standards and captured an unprec- edented three consecutive National League MVP awards. 2003 will perhaps be remembered as his finest effort, as Bonds overcame great personal turmoil to set a franchise record with his seventh 40-homer season, ranking second in the senior circuit with 45 clouts to accompany a .341 batting average and Major League-best .749 slugging mark. Bonds rose to the fourth spot on the all-time homer list after passing Harmon Killebrew, Mark McGwire and Frank Robinson during the 2002 season. After beginning the year by becoming just the second player in Major League history to have multi-homer games in each of the first two contests of the season, Bonds passed McGwire with a solo shot at Colorado on May 25. The future Hall-of-Famer then passed Robinson in grand fashion, launching an estimated 482-foot grand slam off the right field scoreboard at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium on June 5. He then continued his ascent towards baseball immortality on August 9, clubbing a solo homer off Pittsburgh’s Kip Wells at SBC Park for his 600th career roundtripper. Bonds’ ascent to 700 homers was truly remarkable, as he became the 2nd-fastest player to reach the milestone in terms of at-bats necessary, belting the historic clout in his 9,066th career at-bat (Ruth was fastest, doing so in 8,173 at-bats). However, neither Ruth nor Aaron travelled from 600 to 700 on such a rapid pace, as Bonds’ 854 at-bats between clouts bettered that of the Sultan of Swat (1,252 at-bats) and Hammerin’ Hank (1,631). Indeed, Bonds has painted his canvas with a dizzying array of historic moments. He joined the exclusive 500 Home Run Club in dramatic style, clubbing a game-winning, two-run home run off the Dodgers’ Terry Adams in the eighth inning at SBC Park on April 17, 2001. When the 12-time All-Star connected for number 522 off Arizona’s Robert Ellis on May 30, 2001, he become the most prolific left-handed hitting home run slugger in National League history. He surpassed Willie McCovey, a former Giant great who hit 521 clouts over a 22-year career in the senior circuit. Bonds’ 668 roundtrippers as a left fielder is the greatest total of anyone to ever play the position, surpassing the 477 hit by Ted Williams. Bonds joins three other Giants among the elite home run hitters of all time. The Giants, already the first team to have four members of the 500 Home Run Club who primarily spent their careers with that franchise, are now the first club to have three men connect for 500 clouts while wearing that team’s uniform. The most prolific power hitter in San Francisco history, Bonds’ 526 homers as a Giant is the second-highest total in franchise history, ahead of Ott (511) and trailing only Mays (646). Willie McCovey, who went deep 521 times in his career (tied for 14th all-time), belted 469 roundtrippers while with San Francisco. Bonds’ historic 500th homer in a Giants uniform came June 13 in Baltimore, when he belted a two-run clout off the Orioles’ Sidney Ponson. San Francisco’s prodigious slugger was already the first player in Major League history to hit 400 homers for one team and 100 for another (176 with Pittsburgh). 500 HOME RUN CLUB 500 HOME RUN CLUB 500 HOME RUN CLUB 500 HOME RUN CLUB 500 HOME RUN CLUB Player No. 1.
