• Downloading records from OCLC carried out by Assistant Librarians in the different subject libraries.

• Names checked against OCLC and authorized.
• Subjects – no authority control as yet. Library of Congress headings not consistent or specific enough for taxonomic purposes. Considering a mix of LC & ITIS (International Taxonomic Information System).

SmartPORT
• Based on the Z39.50 technology
• Z39.50 is a protocol that translates commands back and forth between the local system and the external database provider.
• Local Unicorn user friendly interface that enables the user to capture records directly into Unicorn.

• Use to capture a complete cataloguing record and replace an existing brief record.
• External databases used – OCLC & RLIN.
• Not used yet at NHM for acquisition purposes or for new authorities.

Configuration of SmartPORT
• Requires OPAC manager training.
• Needs gateway elements and destinations to the relevant databases.
• Necessary to have agreements with required databases.

First Fleet Project
• First eleven convict ships to sail to Australia in 1787 are known as “The First Fleet”
• Three collections of drawings from that voyage held in NHM.

• Export Unicorn entries to website
• Combine text and image on website

• Graphic format needed modification – extra descriptive MARC fields added.
• Original drawings studied.
• Descriptive catalogue entry produced.
• Subject indexing of people, places, concepts, subjects and taxonomy.
