Trinity to join the Anglican Schools Commission in 2015 The Board of Trinity Anglican College and the Bishop of the Diocese of Wangaratta announced on Friday of last week that the College will join the network of Anglican schools administered by the Perth‐based Anglican Schools Commission Inc (ASC) in 2015.

The move aligns the College with an entity whose primary role is to develop new and support existing Anglican schools and is a significant and positive step in the evolution of our school. You may be interested to learn that the Anglican Schools Commission is recognised as one of Australia’s leading systems of independent schools, with over 13,000 students and 1500 staff across their 14 schools in 2015. For the past 30 years, ASC schools have focused on academic excellence in a caring Christian environment, with first class facilities to nurture every student’s learning and educational experience.

That means that our students, your sons and daughters, will be the ones who benefit most from all that being an ASC member school will afford. ASC will open avenues for accelerating Trinity College’s capital development program as well as increasing involvement in cultural festivals and events. Significantly, we will be able to fast track our plans for the construction of our Senior School which will provide superior learning and teaching areas for students in Years 7 ‐ 12 while allowing for our natural expansion in the Junior School.

It also will enable a greater exchange of ideas and networking for teaching and administration staff and provide opportunities for collaboration across a large group of Anglican schools. that we have worked hard to achieve here at Trinity ensuring we are entering a positive and symbiotic relationship.

Although the ASC began its mission in Western Australia, in recent years it has established a special partnership with the Diocese of Wangaratta. From the beginning of next year, all Anglican schools in the Diocese of Wangaratta will be part of the Anglican Schools Commission.

It’s a new and exciting phase that will seamlessly build on our achievements and continue our commitment to your sons and daughters. Of course, I am more than happy to talk with any parents if they have any questions about the move to the ASC or any other matter relating to the education of their son and/or daughter.

This is a significant and exciting development for our College and I am looking forward to being a part of the Anglican Schools Commission from the beginning of 2015!

NAPLAN Tests Released Parents of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 were sent a series of documents outlining their son and/or daughter’s NAPLAN results this week. Of course, the College has been provided with copies of the results of these key literacy and numeracy tests and has begun the process of analysing these. An initial overview of the results across all year levels indicates that from my point of view, students at Trinity continue to perform strongly in almost areas, despite the issue involving a controversial section in the writing paper.

The NAPLAN data available to the College enables key staff at Trinity to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in our teaching and learning and therefore, the opportunity to address and nurture these. It is important that we take time to examine student results from this point of view.

I take this opportunity to congratulate our students on their individual performances in this year’s NAPLAN tests. In particular, I say ‘Well done’ to our Year 3 students – it is a big ask for them to complete tests like these in my opinion! If any parents have any questions about their son and/or daughter’s results, please do not hesitate to contact their Classroom Teacher in the Junior School or the Head of English, Mr Bobilak or Head of Mathematics, Mr Andrew Leary or the Director of Studies, Ms Kym Armstrong for students in the Senior School.

Junior School Production Next Thursday, 11 and Friday, 12 September will see the presentation of the Junior School production ‘Ark Up!’ take to the stage in the College’s Multi‐Purpose Hall. I know that the production will showcase an enormous amount of talent and am looking forward to being entertained as I watch on Thursday evening! Please see the information at the end of the newsletter on how to purchase tickets to the production.


Well done to all members of the cast and crew of ‘Ark Up!’ – I am sure that your involvement in the production will be something you will remember for many years! Good luck and congratulations!

College’s Second Annual Art Exhibition – 5 to 7 September Tickets are now available for the opening of the College’s Art Exhibition and Acquisitive Art Prize. The art works are arriving as I write this article and from what I have seen are of a very high standard! This gala event is to be held in the College’s Multi‐Purpose Hall from 7pm on Friday, 5 September. I would encourage parents and friends of the College to come along to the exhibition and to support us as we continue to promote and support the arts in the local region. Last year’s exhibition was a great success and the opening night was a great social and cultural event! Tickets are $30 per person for Friday night and a gold coin donation for entry over the weekend if you can’t make Friday night. Guests will enjoy fine food, drinks and entertainment from our student musicians, as well as viewing the wonderful art on display on Friday night!

HSC Visual Arts Display and Music Performance On Monday, 1 September students completing the Visual Arts and Music courses as part of their HSC presented their major works and performances to an appreciative audience in the Ian Glachan Wing. Once again, I am appreciative of the enormous amount of time and effort which goes into preparing this aspect of these courses and was enormously impressed with the standard presented on Monday night. Our HSC Music students will complete their performance exams or assessment next Wednesday, 10 September and I wish them all the very best for this! The major works of our Visual Arts students will be assessed later in the year and we are awaiting confirmation of this date from BOSTES.

Congratulations to all students involved in Monday night’s presentation – it was extremely well done and reflected both the talent and hard work of students in both these courses! Well done!

Harry Smith – World Champion! It is not often that a Principal of any school can write about a current student who is a World Champion in something! So, I am very proud to be congratulating Harry Smith (Year 8) who recently has been announced as the World Champion in the Education Perfect Series!

The series was extremely contested with 300,000 students from over 1,000 schools putting their best efforts in. The magnitude of the event highlights just how talented and dedicated Harry is – he answered approx. 7000 Social Science questions and 104,000 in Languages! Well done, Harry!

‘There is in store for me the crown…’ 2 Timothy 4:8 What is the reason for untapped potential? Maybe part of the answer is attitude. Thinking you’ve made it before you even started can be the beginning of the end. For the Christian life, it is no different. How do we become all we are meant to be?

The first pitfall is selfishness. Yes, it’s an obvious one – and yes, you have heard it all before, but there is a reason why the middle letter of sin is ‘i’. Author Stephen Kendrick said, “Almost every sinful action ever committed can be traced back to a selfish motive. It is a trait we hate in other people but justify in ourselves”.

When you became a Christian, you were probably aware of your sin and selfishness. So you committed to living for God instead, right? What changed? Did something slide? God hasn’t changed His goal for you, that you can stand tall in Him and declare “I do not live anymore – Christ lives in me”. (Galatians 2:20)

He is still calling you onwards…

End of Preliminary Course Examinations Students in Year 11 are preparing for the very important end of course exams in their Preliminary HSC Course. These exams take place across Week 8 and begin on Monday, 8 September. The students are approaching their exams with seriousness and have been plaguing their teachers for advice about revision strategies; this is advice that their teachers are very happy to impart! Many students are producing well‐structured and carefully researched summary sheets to assist them in their examination endeavours, and others are submitting draft material to their teachers for comment.

Examination timetables were distributed last week and can also be accessed via the College website. We wish them very well in their study and look forward to seeing the fruits of their labours as they tackle this important set of challenges.

Major works/performances It has been a pleasure over the last couple of weeks to be a part of the audience as our Drama, Visual Arts, Music and D&T (next Tuesday) students display/perform their major works. I am amazed at the level of creativity and skills that are on show from our talented students. As a teacher of a practical subject, I know the amount of effort that goes into reaching such a high standard. I would like to congratulate the students and their dedicated teachers on the fantastic work that has been on display.

World Champion Congratulations to Harry Smith on winning the 2014 Education Perfect World Series. He beat over 300,000 students from 1,000 schools to finish in first place. Harry wins for himself a Gold Medal, MacBook Laptop and $250 iTunes voucher. Well done, Harry on an outstanding effort.

As we head toward the end of another busy term, it is a good time to take stock. One of the great joys about working with children is the fact that every day brings change and new challenges. The individual needs of every learner can change at various times and it is a part of our charter to focus on all aspects of learning. One aspect that is often raised is the resilience of students – their ability to bounce back. This is such an important aspect of learning as it allows every student to take up a challenge, even though success is not guaranteed, and to learn much from the journey. We often marvel at the success of individuals, but we should always be aware that it is often their persistence, their willingness to bounce back from failures that has ensured their success. I have been fortunate enough to listen to many speakers over the past 10 years who have spoken about their success and how this only occurred because of their persistence. This is probably why we tend, as teachers and parents, to recognise and reward effort and celebrate success. As A. Einstein stated, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” So we encourage students to try something new, to challenge the known and step into the unknown with patience and fortitude, as this will ensure greater understanding, deeper knowledge and a more fulfilling life.

Book Week It was wonderful to celebrate Book Week with the staff and students. The book ‘productions’ (see article) were greatly appreciated and it was delightful to witness the involvement of the students in the parade on the Friday.

Book Club This is a fabulous service that is afforded the students, parents and staff at the College. It is a large undertaking and I thank Mrs Trebley for all her work. The outcome is very favourable for the College and allows us to purchase many new resources for literacy.

Junior School Production ‘Ark Up’ I am sure that all are aware of the work taking place with the students involved in this major undertaking. We look forward to large, appreciative audiences and encourage all students and their families to get in quick to ensure they get a seat for Thursday or Friday night next week.

Bike Safety An important reminder to all students and their parents that when riding to school or home that they must wear a helmet and also take care. Unfortunately there was a near miss reported to me last week in the Thurgoona area and the driver was quite shaken.

Performance Evening Well done to all our students for their wonderful display of talent during Thursday’s Performance Evening. Our parents and friends were treated to a night of variety, including song, movement, drama and instrumental pieces. The evening provided an opportunity for all students to participate in the performance to an enthusiastic audience. I’m sure you will agree that the campus is blessed with a tremendous depth of talent. The evening was very much enjoyed by all.

Tournament of Minds Congratulations to the students who participated in the Tournament of Minds in Wagga on Saturday, 23 August. Responsible Pet Ownership The campus participated in this incursion last Friday. The presentation focused on how to take care of our pets by exploring what it means to be a responsible pet owner.

Hot Lunches We were treated to our now famous and delicious Hot Lunch Day on Wednesday, 3 September. Special thanks to Maria Baker and her team for the organisation of what was a culinary delight. Play Equipment I am delighted to inform the campus that new play equipment has been ordered and will be installed as soon as possible, including soft fall. The equipment will be a most welcome addition to our playground.

Donations Required Following up from the previous newsletter, do any families have new or used games and or activities that could be donated for the students to use in the Quiet Play Space? The Quiet Play Space has proven to be a popular area for students to play at Lunch and Recess. This has been so popular that I am now looking to expand the choice of activities available. CIS Netball Inter Association Competition On Monday, 25 August Trinity was proudly represented by four girls as part of the Riverina Associated Schools netball team. Molly Goldsworthy played in the Open team and Shaylah House, Isabelle Coughlan and Maggie St John played in the 15 and under team.

The girls left early at 7:00am Sunday morning and arrived in Sydney at 4:00pm where they had the opportunity to partake in a training session with Jenny O’Keefe, who has coached the NSW swifts and numerous state teams. The next day they travelled to the Sports Centre in Penrith where they then competed in four games of strong, competitive netball against the other regions from CIS. The 15 and under team surprised themselves, having two very close games against AICES and ISA. The open team also did well, winning a game against AICES.

Throughout the day selectors watched all the teams and chose around the top 20 girls from both the open and 15s teams to participate in the final trial, ‘possibles vs probables’. Shaylah House from Year 9 was picked for this trial and then went on to be selected as an emergency for the 15 years NSW CIS team.

Australian Under 14 Boys Championships Albury Basketball are hosting the Australian U14 Boys club championships from Monday, 29 September to Saturday, 4 October 2014. Currently, Albury Basketball are looking for scorers of all levels to participate in this exciting and rewarding experience. If students have a day or two spare during this week, your help would be gratefully appreciated. Supervisors will be on hand to help teach you the online system. Tumbarumba Public School Equestrian Interschool Competition The Tumbarumba Public School Equestrian Interschool Competition will be held on Sunday, 19 October at the Tumbarumba Showgrounds. Volleyball Last Friday Trinity participated in a volleyball gala day, held at the Lauren Jackson Spots Stadium. The Senior Boys team did extremely well with 5 wins and a draw, taking out top spot by the end of the day. The team played to a very high standard with the whole team putting in the effort.

The Senior Girls volleyball team had an absolute ball as they formed well as a team. With their energy and power they started off strong beating

St Pauls, Murray and James Fallon High schools. As the day went on they faced more challenging matches; the whole team’s effort and enthusiasm resulted in the team coming second.

The Junior Boys (Year 9) volleyball team competed well against the other schools and improved immensely after the first gala day, last term. This term the boys won almost every game, losing only twice to the same team, James Fallon. Their first game provided them with some confidence to follow on and win their next game, but they fell short against their next opponent. The Junior Boys Captain, Hamish Jasper provided his team with extra knowledge of the game which ensured we were competitive throughout the competition.

The Junior Girls team had a slow start, losing their first two games against St Pauls and James Fallon, but finished strong, winning their last four games comfortably. As the day went on the girls came together and started playing as a team, which reflected in the final scores.

Learn to Swim Program The Trinity College K/P to 2 Learn to Swim program will be run over two blocks this year at the Gould Academy, with Block A beginning this coming Thursday, 11 September. This is an excellent opportunity for our College students from both campuses to further develop their swimming skills and confidence prior to summer. Students will be placed in like ability groups


and instructed by a qualified Austswim instructor in an indoor facility. Students will need to wear their labelled summer uniform as normal to school and will need to bring labelled:

The K/P to Year 2 Swimming Carnival will be held in Week 4, Term 4.

Trinity College Swim Club Trinity College is investigating the possibility of introducing a non‐competitive swim club for Term 4, 2014 and Term 1, 2015. The emphasis of the two weekly training sessions will be on stroke development and fitness. Currently, I am negotiating two sessions, with one being before school and the second, after school. Term 4 sessions will be held at both the Albury Swim Centre and Lavington Swim Centre. In Term 1, 2015 both sessions will be held at Lavington. A qualified coach will be employed to plan the program and conduct the sessions. It is anticipated the cost of the program would be $100 per term, plus daily pool entry or a season’s pass.

Students who wish to participate must be prepared to swim at least a kilometre per session initially. It is anticipated most squad members will have previous squad experience, participated in swimming lessons or have a high level of natural talent. If your child is interested in participating, please complete the Expression of Interest form at the back of the newsletter and have your child return it to me by Friday, 12 September.

Year 2 Musical Students in Year 2 recently had the experience of performing in front of an audience when they presented the musical ‘The King With The Dusty Feet’. Despite some nerves, all performed well and entertained the crowd of peers and parents with songs and movement, including ‘I Love My Bath’ and ‘One Step, Two Steps’. The excitement once the show had ended made all the hard work worthwhile, with students justifiably proud of their achievements. Special thanks go to the Year 2 teachers, the Art Department for providing backdrops and the Year Nine helpers. School Band Competition – La Trobe University Trinity Soul Band performed against four other local schools in a new band competition held as part of La Trobe University’s Open Day. The bands included pop, rock and heavy metal numbers, providing an interesting contrast and a difficult job for the judges. Trinity performed admirably against bands consisting predominantly of older students and enjoyed the atmosphere of the supportive audience. Although the band didn’t place, it was a great experience to perform outside of school with professional sound equipment and to hear the talent from other local schools.

French Poetry for Fame and Fortune! All French students in Years 7‐10 will be competing in next week’s inaugural TAC French Poetry Competition. Each year level has its own poem to learn and present during their normal lesson time. Please ask your child to recite their poem to you and explain the poem’s meaning, because judges will be allocating points for preparation, memorisation, pronunciation, fluency, clarity, expression and physical presence. Winners from each class will go on to the final at lunch on Friday in the French room. Prizes include rosettes and certificates as well as cash prizes ‐ $40 for first, $20 for second and $10 for third places in each year level, and special merit awards.

French Cafe Year 6 will be running their own French Cafe on Friday, 12 September to put their French into practice and raise money for Relay for Life. This will be an event just for Year 6 (sorry everyone) as they practise their French with each other while buying and selling French

delicacies from their own patisseries. Those students who use the most French will win those all Australian delicacies ‐ Tim Tams!

Year 1 and 2 Parlent Francais! The entire Year 1 and 2 contingent have been busy learning a play this term entitled ‘Monsieur Le Est Perdu’ (Mr Le is Lost). We are using the AIM method of language learning that incorporates gestures with words and it is delivering outstanding results. Excerpts will be filmed this week and posted on the website. On Friday 29 August, Year 9 headed down to Albury City Council to learn the roles and responsibilities that our local council members have. We were taught about what each of the nine council members do in the community and how there are many people involved behind the scenes in each of these jobs. Students were selected to represent each council member and their main focus within their workplace. The elected mayor for the day was Kale Geraghty who learnt what the job was all about from the present Mayor, Kevin Mack. We learnt that the nine council members get re‐elected every four years and Mayor, every 12 months.

Skools program. We were also taught the importance of educating young people about the negative effects tagging has on the community and what we can do to combat this huge problem in our area. Year 9 was informed about the youth council that comes together once a week and talks about new and exciting things that need to be planned out for the future. This council is formed by students from surrounding schools.

Overall, the two hours we spent at Albury City Council were very entertaining and educational; everyone left knowing that they had learnt something new!

Balmy breezes, azure skies, tennis whites – what other elements are required for a perfect day? Last Sunday provided the perfect backdrop for that most civilised of sporting occasions: social tennis.

Year 7 and 8 players took to the courts in the morning. The competition was full of high spirits, good company, and healthy competition. In the afternoon, Year 9 players showcased some competitive talent and the tennis on offer was characterised by flourish and agility.

This weekend students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have the opportunity to get together, shake off the winter blues, play a spot of tennis and enjoy some delicious, home‐baked morning tea. The details are as follows:

Uniform Shop Operating Hours during Term

This term the Year 9 Commerce class has been learning how to run a small business. Part of the assessment for this unit is to operate their own small business, using the knowledge and skills learned throughout the term.

So, on Tuesday 9 September it’s Panshake day! The students will provide tasty pikelets and delicious milkshakes during lunchtime and this will be available to all students and teachers.
