5 REASONS TO BETHANKFUL FOR OLDMODERN TECHNOLOGY

It's that thankful time of year again. As past November ConnectYourself issues can attest, it's a time of year where we atConnectIt like to give love and thanks to all things wireless. Asidefrom our awesome tower crews, smartphones, the DBI Exofit, andJim's bountiful Halloween candy contributions, this year we'rerecognizing the kick a$$ technologies of yesteryear that setprecedent for the comforting innovations we enjoy today.

With all of the technical gadgets we've come up with over the pastdecade, you might think the human species has reached itsinnovational zenith, and that nothing which could be inventedhasn't already been invented. Between smartphones, medicationsthat slow time, selfie sticks, and the word "Crackberry" actuallybeing added to Collins dictionary, it may even seem thatmodernization has come and gone. But not so fast there buckeroo! Our grandparents and great grandparents had access to some ofthe hottest new "innovations" that we do today; they just didn'tlivetweet about it.

TECH IT OUTTHANKSGIVINGSTYLE...

It is widely believed that thebest tech deals take place onBlack Friday. Not so much. While there are a few dealsworth lining up at 3am for, what Walmart, Best Buy, andTarget's marketingdepartments won't tell you isthat not every BF "deal" isreally a good deal. How canyou tell? Start with SlickdealsPrice Tracker, a site thatprovides a price history fordozens of stores; just paste inthe URL of your product. Of allthe "deals" out thisBF, getting2GB of free data is

years ago with the Fiske ReadingMachine. This handheld reading deviceallowed our ancestors to read adultfiction and fantasy novels about equalrights in total privacy. Designed by abookwormy ophthalmologist, Rear AdmiralBradley Fisk, the device condensed MarkTwain's 93,000 word The InnocentsAbroad, into a pamphlet just 13 pageslong. We all know that the Fisk machinedid little to revolutionize reading in the20th century. But we are left with theknowledge that the desire to control oursurroundings in the palm of our handswasn't an idea hatched up in our lifetimes. 2. THE FAXWith social media, smartphones, andeven smartwatches, the news isalways at our fingertips. We're notthe first generation to have access tofastbreaking news, however. Back inthe 1930s, radio facsimilesdistributed newspapers tohouseholds with enough disposableincome to purchase the specialmachine. An ingenious invention of modern convenience that wasonly slightly offset by the 6 hour printing time. And mostmachines could only get the signal between midnight and 6am.Despite the promise of gaining "instant" access to news, radiofacsimiles never really took off. A mystery, this one.

3. SLIGHTLYINTELLIGENTWATCH

Wearable technology has a historical precedent? Why not. As itturns out, 17th century China had created a ring containing oneof the most revolutionary mathematical technologies in the worldat that time: the abacus. Now, I know what you're thinking, butusing an abacus in old timey merchant trading was just ascommon as pulling out your smartphone's calculator.

Most of us would never leavehome without a GPS to guideour way to the new job site. Didyou know that GPS has beenaround for almost a century? In1932, the Iter Avto was broughtto market. It was essentially abox that contained a scroll mapof the driver's route. As the cartraveled, the scroll wouldautomatically move to providethe driver with an uptodategeolocation. This map alsoprovided real time informationabout the area, like if you werenear a river, hotel, or railway, allowing you to take immediate action. The only real drawback wasthat it relied on the driver to create the route and noting possibledangers, which totally negates the purpose of a GPS system.Eventually, the technology died out and was never heard fromagain.

5. STREETVIEW

Google Street View, wasn't the first "street view," nor the firstsource of unintentional internet hilarity. In the late 1970s, MITresearchers invented a technology that allowed people to explorethe streets of Aspen. Using cameras mounted atop stationwagons, hundreds of students were sent out into the streets. Theresult? See for yourself. Based on the footage, the Aspen MovieMap contains no nudity, active crimes, or disturbing cropformations, which might explain why it never hit the spotlight.

Answer to lastweek: Galileo was responsible fornaming most of the moon'sfeatures. He thought thedarker areas were seas andcalled them "Maria," latin for"seas." The first Apollolanding occurred in MareTranquilitatis (the Sea ofTranquility). Of course, thereare no seas. But the nameshave lived on.
