5 th Grade News Week of February 6, 2017 MATH Fifth graders will add and subtract fractions with both like and unlike denominators this week! QUIZ FRIDAY! It is important that students are looking over their homework mistakes & knowing what they did wrong. If they are unsure about something, they need to come see me! Practice makes perfect! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! * February 13- Valerie LANGUAGE ARTS * Our anchor story this week is entitled, We Were There, Too! This will focus on patriotism. *The students will work with Venn diagrams and compare and contrast the two characters. We will also work on understanding the text structure and determine the theme from details. *For our spelling test this week, the students will be given the entire list. The spelling pattern is somewhat difficult, so these words will need to be memorized. See the spelling letter I sent home today! *The 5 th graders will learn about different prefixes as well as transitions words. RELIGION ACRE Test today and tomorrow. This is a religious education assessment used by Catholic schools to assess the effectiveness of our catechetical program, to assess the religious beliefs, attitudes, practices and perceptions of students in fifth grade. This test summarizes how well the students have learned the basic teachings of the Catholic church in the preceding years. SCIENCE Fifth graders will begin their Earth Science Space Systems unit this week! Students will learn about the structure of the universe and stars. We have new science books that both 5 th and 6 th graders are using and it’s important we take very good care of these new books. SOCIAL STUDIES Fifth graders will begin Ch.5 Forming a Government Unit. This week we’ll focus on Sec # 1: Articles of Confederation and how these provided a framework for a national government. We will discuss how the American people examined many ideas about government. We will also learn about the Confederation Congress establishing the Northwest Territory. Reminder for fifth graders to wear deodorant daily & bring home their gym clothes every Friday to wash! Thank you.

MATH 6B- combining like terms… QUIZ ON FRIDAY! 6A- we tested and ended our unit on expressions & equations last week… reviewing fractions & mixed number operations this week… QUIZ ON FRIDAY!

SOCIAL STUDIES Ch. 7 Changes for Jewish People. Sixth graders will identify cultural traits and groups. They will explain the significance of Ruth, Naomi, and the rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkai to Judaism. They will learn how Judaism survived after the Romans destroyed the Temple in A.D. 70. Test Ch. 7 Thursday, February 2. Help your child study for this test using his/her notes. Vocabulary quiz on Quizlet (spelling vocabulary words correctly counts). .

LANGUAGE ARTS *The 6th graders will continue reading our novel, Hoot. New vocabulary words will be introduced this week. There will be a vocabulary/comprehension test on Friday! *We are going to learn about different genres this week, beginning with memoirs, historical fiction, myths and legends, and science fiction. The students will be annotating and citing evidence while reading different passages. We are also continually working on using the “RACE” acronym when answering comprehension questions. Ask your child what this means! *The students will be finishing up their persuasive writings

for the diocesan assessment!

RELIGION Chapter 10 The Ark and the Temple. This chapter will help the sixth graders learn about the importance of the ark of the covenant and the Temple to the Hebrews. It will help them identify the relationship between Catholic rituals for worship and the rituals of the people of God in the Old Testament. They will comprehend the special mission of men who receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

SCIENCE Sixth graders will learn about the layers of the earth this week. It’s a short section and we will QUIZ ON FRIDAY. A study guide will go home and foldables will be made in class. Study skills still need some major work in sixth grade- let’s keep working hard at this to

prepare our best for junior high!
