We discussed upcoming events of the Movie Night and looking ahead to back to school events in various districts. Youth – On 8/13 I participated in the Cornell Cooperative Extension program for their Adult and Life Skills Bootcamp. I spoke with the group of kids about networking and preparing for interviews and then listened to them give their “elevator speeches” about who they are. Youth – I have begun to plan this year’s SADD Conference and will be working with the schools on other programs they could be interested in. Youth – Stacy and I have also been working on completing the paperwork for funding this year’s programs. Ensuring that all paperwork is submitted from agencies and ready to handle their claims. 4-H and Youth Development:

The 2019 Allegany County Fair was “Super Amazing” so many youth, volunteers and staff embraced the Super Hero theme. The created fun themed projects that were on display in our 4-H Youth Building all week long. Many decorated their animals stall with a variety “super” decorations! In addition, capes, aprons, super hero shirts and hats were all on display! Members will be voting on next year’s theme soon, we are really looking forward to hearing their decision and seeing how they incorporate it into next year’s fair. Despite the sound of it, it was not all fun and games at fair this year. Our 4-Hers really worked hard this year creating State Fair worthy youth building projects and animal projects. Allegany County will be well represented at the New York State Fair that begins on August 21st in Syracuse, NY.

• We will have 34 members bringing a large assortment of items to the judged and displayed in the NYS 4-H Youth Building, August 21st-25th.

• We will also have 9 members showing horses, 3 showing sheep, 4 showing dogs and 20 members showing rabbits and cavies!

• Allegany County will also have several members participating in Judging/ Skill competitions! As we are preparing for our excitement in Syracuse, many neighboring counties are still holding their county fairs. In an effort to strengthen relationships with our fellow 4-Hers, many youth have been visiting neighboring fairs. Our 4-Hers have met with other 4-Hers, shared stories, tips and support! These trips to neighboring fairs also included tours at some of our local 4-H Market supporters. We are incredibly proud of our youth and am sure you are too! If you would be interested in attending the NYS Fair, we have free passes available at the 4-H Office. The fair runs from 8/21-9/1. 4-H activities run the duration of fair however, youth building items are rotated. Our time slot is 8/21-8/25. We hope to see you at the fair!

Garden based STEAM successes in Allegany County - From composting, to courtyard chickens, hydroponics and so much more, listen to a panel of experienced teachers describe their school garden programs, what it took to build them, and give best practices to any school looking to start gardens of their own. PRESS RELEASE

8/12/2019

BELMONT, NEW YORK - Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County’s 4-H Program is excited to share:

Andover Central School District Youth Gardening Project

Sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County, a youth gardening program was held at the Andover Central School District, August 4th – 8th, 2019.

Andover Central School district teamed up with members of Allegany’s CCE 4-H to host a garden program discussing the importance of plants, fungus and our local pollinators. Much like the program last year, many hours were spent refurbishing the garden found behind the school’s Art classroom. A great time was had by all, as everyone got down on their hands and knees to dig out weeds and prepare the garden to plant flowers. The children familiarize themselves with plants you might find in your own garden, such as snapdragons, begonias, hostas and geraniums. The end result was beautiful and the hard work that the students put into the garden showed. They kids smiled proudly, knowing that the end result was because of their efforts.

At the end of the program the students were able to head home happy, with flowers which they potted and propagated themselves. Along with the knowledge they can use to further improve their own indoor or outdoor gardens back at home.

A special thanks to guest speaker Deb Wagoner for coming in to give an educational lesson on bees and why we should take a moment to understand the importance of our local buzzing pollinator. Flowering would be extremely difficult without the assistance of honey bees, many of our major crops (apples, mangos, and peaches) wouldn’t be able to fertilize.

Also, a shout out to the awesome staff members who were able to help with the program, without them, things would not have moved nearly as smoothly. The members of CCE had an amazing time working with everyone who participated and hopes to work together in future.

If you’re interested in teaming up and working with Allegany’s Cooperative Extension you can contact us directly at the Allegany County 4-H Office or we can be reached by mailed to Allegany County Cooperative Extension, 5435A County Road 48, Belmont, NY 14813. Please contact Allegany’s CCE STEM educator, Lisa Reynolds at (585) 268-7644 Ext 22 or CCE’s Agricultural Educator, Jeremy Baier at (585) 268-7644 Ext 14 with any questions.

The Andover Gardening Project is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County (CCE-Allegany). The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. For more information, call 525-268-7644 or visit our website at www.cce.cornell.edu/allegany.
