Some children sail through exams with very little stress. Infact, some parents wish their children would get morestressed about exams! For others even small tests causereal anxiety.

There are lots of ways to help your child deal with examstress, from practical things like providing healthy foodand helping him to getting organised, to actuallysupporting your child with revision.

This simple rule covers the four things your child willneed to do during exam time:Revise and recapOrganise time and workSleep and restEat healthily

Revising Revision needs to be active: reading through notes willnot make them stick in your child's memory. Encouragehim to make notes, to highlight key points and words andto go over each topic several times. At the end of each topic, suggest he makes a short list ofthe main points. These will be useful for a quick revisionsession the night before each exam. There are plenty of websites which offer revision gamesand activities as well as practice papers with markschemes. Using a variety of techniques will help all theinformation to sink in. Praise your child when he is working hard. Smallrewards can be a real incentive to work, too.

Getting organised Work out a revision timetable together early on so thatyour child allows enough time to cover all the topics heneeds to revise. Ticking off each topic as it's done can helprevision seem more manageable. Make sure your child is setting realistic targets. Trying

This will help you both feel that there isan end in sight! Help your child to organise his clothes, foodand pens the night before each exam. Feelingorganised about the little things will help to cutdown on stress.

Sleep and rest Encourage your child to get plenty of sleepand to take regular breaks while he's revising. The brain will work better if it's rested. Trying to cram in last-minute revision thenight before an exam is generally a bad idea. Itwill make your child panic and might evenaffect his performance the following day. It'smuch better to have a relaxing evening thenight before each exam so he can do his best thefollowing day. Exercise, even a walk to the shops, will helpyour child to concentrate when he gets back towork. It can also help him to sleep better. Discourage your child from drinking caffeine-rich drinks like tea, coffee and cola in theevening as caffeine can disturb sleep. Make sure an alarm is set for the next

King Henry's School for Potential Wives

Name of Pupil BOLEYN, AnneAge 8Subject History

Anne is very keen on this subject. She's not as confidenton her dates as she might be, but she certainly knowsher kings. She enjoyed our outing to the Royal Palace. Ihad a lot of trouble dragging her away when the timecame to go home. In the end I had to take her by the earand say 'chop chop' with some force. If the headmasterhad been there, she'd have really got it in the neck. Weare hoping for great things for Anne in the forthcomingexaminations. Her mother was also very good at history, and in this respect Anne is clearly a chip off the oldblock. Just so long as she doesn't lose her head and getcarried away, she should obtain a good grade.

Duel by David Grossman,translated by Betsy Rosenburg(Bloomsbury, £4.99)Age 11-15yrs

The Marsh Award was established to raise theprofile of books written in languages other thanEnglish. We are poor at exploring such literature, although it is heartening to find Egmont andOrchard publishing strongly in this area. Duel, thisyear's winner, is short, touching and often comic. Ithas a distinctive accent, but this is a distinctivebook. David, volunteering in an old people's home, finds himself in the midst of a long-standing rowbetween two old men. This is a poignant reminder
