    The Great Controversy 488Our Goal {169}

    THE SANCTUARY in heaven is the verycenter of Christs work in behalf of

    men. It opens to view the plan of

    redemption, bringing us down to thevery close of time and revealing thetriumphant issue of the contestbetween righteous and sin. It is of theutmost importance that all should

    thoroughly investigate these subjects.

    Christ, Our SacrificeInitial Words {243}

    THE NEW Testament identifies Jesuswith the two major aspects of the

    Old Testament sacrificial system: He

    is our Sacrifice (Hebrews 9, 10), andHe is our High Priest (Hebrews 510).

    We will study different aspects ofChrists ultimate sacrifice and seewhat His once-and-for-all death has

    provided for us.

    Christ, Our Sacrifice1. Substitute Sacrifice

    Isaiah 53:12 NKJVTHEREFORE I will divide Him a

    portion with the great, and He shall

    divide the spoil with the strong,because He poured out His soul unto

    death, and He was numbered withthe transgressors, and

    He bore the sin of many, and made

    intercession for the transgressors.

    1. Substitute SacrificeJesus in Isaiah 53 {244}

    ISAIAH 52:13

    53:12 is a powerfuldescription of Christs death for the

    sins of the world. Several aspects in

    this passage provide clear evidencethat Jesus death is atonement in

    the form of penal substitution,which means that He took thepenalty that others deserved and, in

    fact, died as a Substitute for them.

    Jesus in Isaiah 53Implications {244}

    1. Jesus sufferedfor others. He tooktheir grief and sorrows (vs. 4),transgressions, iniquities (vss. 5, 6,8, 11), and sin (vs. 12).

    2. He brings great benefits to those

    for whom He suffers: peace andhealing (vs. 5) and justification(vs. 11).

    13/23

    Jesus in Isaiah 53Implications {244}

    3. It was Gods will for Jesus to sufferand be crushed (vs. 10).God put ouriniquity on Him(vs. 6) because it wasGods plan that He died in our stead.

    4. Jesus is righteous (vs. 11), without

    violence or deceit(vs. 9).5. He was a guilt offering, an atoning

    sacrifice for sin (vs. 10).

    Christ, Our Sacrifice2. Sufficient Sacrifice

    Hebrews 2:9 NKJVBUT WE see Jesus, who was made alittle lower than the angels, for the

    suffering of death crowned withglory and honor,

    that He, by the grace of God, might

    taste death for everyone.

    2. Sufficient SacrificeFor Everyone {245}

    JESUS DIED for sinners. He waswithout sin (Heb. 4:15) so that when

    He gave His life as a sacrifice He

    would not die for His own sin.On the contrary, He was to bear the

    sins of many (Heb. 9:28, NKJV), tomake propitiation for the sins of thepeople (Heb. 2:17, NKJV), and to put

    away sin forever (Heb. 9:26).

    16/23

    2. Sufficient SacrificeFor Everyone {245}

    In Hebrews 2:9, the purpose ofmaking Jesus lower than the angels

    is so that He could suffer death;

    to explain why Jesus death is arequirement for His exaltation.

    The goal of the Incarnation is thedeath of the Son. Only through thesuffering of death could Jesus

    become the Author of salvation.

    2. Sufficient SacrificeFor Everyone {245}

    Upon Christ as our substitute andsurety was laid the iniquity of us all.He was counted a transgressor, that

    He might redeem us from thecondemnation of the law. The guilt of

    every descendant of Adam waspressing upon His heart. The wrath ofGod against sinfilled the soul of His

    Son with consternation.The Desire of Ages 753

    2. Sufficient SacrificeChrists Blood {246}

    Christs blood is better than anyother blood. No other blood can

    really provide forgiveness; Christs

    death is the only reason sins areforgiven, before and after the Cross

    (Heb. 9:15).The shedding of Christs blood, and

    its effects, are clear evidence that

    Christs death was substitionary.

    Christ, Our Sacrifice3. Spotless Sacrifice

    1 Peter 1:18, 19 NKJVKNOWING THAT you were not

    redeemed with corruptible things,

    like silver or gold, from your aimlessconduct received by tradition from

    your fathers,but with the precious blood ofChrist, as of a lamb without blemish

    and without spot.

    3. Spotless SacrificeWithout Sin {247}

    ALL OFFERINGS had to beunblemished. The Hebrew tamim

    could also be translated as

    complete, unscathed, withoutfault, or perfect.

    Only the best was good enough.Pertaining to people, the word is

    used to characterize their relationship

    with God as being blameless

    3. Spotless SacrificeWithout Sin {247}

    Jesus perfectly fulfills the OldTestament criterion of a spotlesssacrifice. His pure life established

    Jesus as a perfect sacrifice.This is the guarantee of our salvation,for only a sinless one could bear our

    sin for us, and it is His perfectrighteousness that covers us, now

    and in the judgment.

    3. Spotless SacrificeWithout Sin {247}

    The Greek amomos,without blemishis used to describe not only Jesus and

    His flawless sacrifice but also the

    character of His followers.Through Christs death and His

    ministry, we are presentedblameless before God (Jude 24).This is possible only because the

    Blameless One stands in our place.

    Christ, Our SacrificeFinal Words {249}

    Paul sounds a warning in Hebrews6:46 and 10:2631.

    The real danger of disregard and

    neglect is that it is often a subtle andvery gradual process. The transition

    can be unnoticeable.Christs sacrifice should never become

    so familiar that we regard it as

    commonplace
