    The Heavenly SanctuaryThe Picture of Salvation {168}

    UNQUESTIONABLY, THE greatestrevelation of the love and characterof God was at the cross, where the

    Lord offered Himself in the person ofJesus Christ as a sacrifice for the sins

    of a world that never had to sin tobegin with.

    The Heavenly SanctuaryThe Picture of Salvation {168}

    To help us understand better whatthis great sacrifice meant, God

    devised the earthly sanctuary, a

    pictorial representation of the planof salvation.

    This earthly sanctuary, however, onlymodeled the heavenly one, which isthe center of Gods presence and of

    His activity in the universe.

    As the key for a complete system oftruth, the sanctuary and Christs

    priestly ministry bacame the basisfor the Seventh-day Adventist faith

    and still remains so.

    In fact, the sanctuary message is theAdventists unique doctrine.

    No other doctrine of the AdventistChurch (with the possible exceptionof the Sabbath) has faced so many

    challenges. Fortunately, thesechallenges have not only been

    withstood, they have increased ourunderstanding of this crucialteaching and have made us stronger

    in our understanding of salvation.

    The Great Controversy488Our Goal {169}

    THE SANCTUARY in heaven is the verycenter of Christs work in behalf of

    men. It opens to view the plan of

    redemption, bringing us down to thevery close of time and revealing thetriumphant issue of the contestbetween righteous and sin. It is of theutmost importance that all should

    thoroughly investigate these subjects.

    The Heavenly SanctuaryInitial Words {171}

    SCRIPTURE IS clear: the heavenlysanctuary is a real place, and from it

    we can learn truths about the

    character and work of our God.Thus, the focus of this weeks lesson

    is the heavenly sanctuary and whatGod is doing there for us, becausewhat He is doing in the sanctuary is,

    indeed, for us.

    1. Gods Dwelling RoomHis Residence {172}

    GOD IS everywhere. He isomnipresent, which means that He

    is present throughout the universe.

    Complementing Gods attribute of

    omnipresence is His eternal

    existence. God has neither beginningnor end (Ps. 90:2). He has always

    been and will always be (Jude 1:25).

    16/27

    1. Gods Dwelling RoomHis Residence {172}

    God obviously dwells in heaven in aspecial way, in His glorious presence

    and pure holiness.

    The greatest manifestation of Godspresence exists in heaven.

    He chooses to reveal Himself in aspecial way in heaven and, as we will

    see, in the heavenly sanctuary.

    17/27

    1. Gods Dwelling RoomHis Residence {172}

    We are limited in our understandingof His physical nature. He is spirit

    (John 4:24) and, as such, cannot be

    contained in any structure ordimension (1 Kings 8:27).

    Even so, the Bible presents heaven(John 14:13) and the heavenly

    sanctuary as real places (Heb. 8:2)

    where God can be seen (Rev. 4:2, 3).

    2. Gods Throne RoomGod as King {173}

    THE BIBLE also reveals God assovereign. God is not only King of

    heaven but also King of all the earth

    (Ps. 47:7, NKJV), here and now (Ps.93:2).

    That Gods throne is established in

    heaven has several ramifications. Oneof them is that God is independent and

    superior to the rest of the universe.

    2. Gods Throne RoomGod as King {173}

    Gods rule encompassesrighteousness and justice, as well aslove and truthfulness. These moral

    qualities describe how He acts in thehuman world.

    These qualities, which compose Hisrule, are also the same as those thatHe wants His people to manifest in

    their lives (Mic. 6:8, Isa. 59:14).

    Psalm 9:4-8 NKJVYOU SAT on the throne judging in

    righteousness, You have rebuked thenations, You have destroyed the

    wicked. But the Lordhas

    prepared His throne for judgment,and He shall administer judgment

    3. Gods Court RoomGod as Judge {175}

    WHEN GODjudges, the throne roombecomes a courtroom and the

    heavenly throne a judgment seat.

    The One enthroned is the One whojudges (see Ps. 9:48), a concept

    known in the ancient Near Eastwhere kings often functioned as

    judges, as well.

    25/27

    3. Gods Court RoomGod as Judge {175}

    The classic combination of throneroom and judgment appears in

    Daniel 7:914. There, the judgment

    consists of two strands: a verdict ofvindication for the saints and a

    sentence of condemnation for Gods

    enemies. God is just, and all ourquestions about justice will be

    answered in Gods time, not ours.

    3. Gods Court RoomPlace of Salvation {176}

    The book of Hebrews teaches thatChrist is ministering in the heavenly

    sanctuary as our High Priest.

    His work there is focused on oursalvation, for He appears in the

    presence of God for us (Heb. 9:24,

    NASB), giving us assurance that wewill receive mercy and grace because

    of what He has done for us.
