Dr. Tim Greene, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs,Western Michigan University

Welcome to Western Michigan University, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and to the 4th Annual Conference on Livable Communities. This is an important conference for the future of transportation and we are pleased to host it once again. As members of this consor-tium, you are leaders, educators and innovators in helping address our country’s ever-growing need for safe, reliable and environmentally sustainable transportation systems. Your work, in

particular, has far-reaching implications for making our communities more livable – more walkable and bike-able, and with greater access to public transit.

We value the expertise each of you contributes to the consortium and to the conference. We also appreciate the public agencies, industry partners and interest groups that actively support the Center not only through finan-cial support, but also by reviewing research proposals and identifying research opportunities.

I hope you find the conference engaging, productive and thought provoking. Thank you for attending and shar-ing your ideas and knowledge.

Dr. Jun-Seok Oh, Ph.D., PE, PTOE, Director, Transportation Center for Livable Communities (TRCLC)Professor, Civil and Construction Engineering, Western Michigan University

Welcome to TRCLC’s 4th Annual Summer Conference for Livable Communities! It is my great pleasure to host this year’s conference again. This conference is intended to assist researchers and professionals in developing livable communities by introducing state-of-the-art research and techniques. I hope this conference becomes a place for researchers, engineers, planners, advocates, and administrators who work to make our communities

livable. I am also very glad to see many graduate students who present their research posters in this conference. I also like to thank all TRCLC consortium members for their contribution for TRCLC research as well we this conference. Members of the TRCLC consortium have worked hard in identifying current and future problems in building livable communities and strive to provide solutions to those issues. While looking forward to seeing research innovations through this conference, I hope this conference is enjoyable for all attendees.

Welcome

Thank you to the TRCLC Consortium Partner Institutions -

A very special thank you to theKalamazoo Community Foundationfor sponsoring the breakfasts and lunches during the conference.

AcknowledgmentThis conference is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s University’s Transportation Center Program.
