LINPAC Packaging produce plastic packaging for the retail, catering, manufacturing, packing and food sectors. They supply an innovative product range of more than 10,000 items – from trays to disposable tableware. The business challenge 3t were employed to aid in modernising Linpac’s supply chain to best practice levels. In 2004 Linpac ran 2 main DC sites at Featherstone and St Helens, a vehicle fleet and 5 satellite depots around the United Kingdom – each with their own staff, stock and vehicles. Distribution planning was maintained by an add-on to their AS400 based ERP system and was not tailored to their real needs. This did not allow for Linpac to be flexible in their service provision. They realised that change was required to maintain and grow their market share, and to extend profitability. The 3t solution We began with a staged withdrawal of satellite sites and their core fleet between 2005 and 2007 – culminating in a reduced operating cost on the two main DC sites. A full-load nationwide delivery network was established with our carrier partners to deliver goods throughout the UK to a next-day service level. This in turn protected Linpac from the cost of transport ownership. As well as managing all domestic customer deliveries, we also manage ex works, export delivery and all inter-site trunking between the two DC’s. In the last four years 3t have continued to provide Linpac with a dynamic, flexible, low cost transportation solution resistant to the impact of rising costs. How we delivered Using our own bespoke software (GCM), coupled with our vast knowledge of the global carrier market, we have been able to provide significant year on year savings for Linpac Packaging.
