1313 AP English 31 credit Prerequisite: Pre-AP English 1 or 2, parental permission, teacher approval AP Language and Composition emphasizes the analysis of a variety of literary and nonfiction texts with particular attention to American Literature. Students reflect this analysis in compositions that use sophisticated syntax and vocabulary, effective use of proof, and control of the conventions of language. Emphasis is on wide reading and analytic response through timed essays in preparation for the Advanced Placement Examination in Language and Composition.

1394 Dual Credit English 31 creditPrerequisite: 11 th , TSI exempt through EOC/SAT/ACT or TSI, parental permission with tuition

paid to TVCC. Student will be concurrently enrolled at TVCC for ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302.

The first semester, aims to help the student acquire and/or improve skills in producing effective writing, which observes the conventions of Edited American English – i.e., writing which is acceptable in the academic and professional world. The student will be guided through the composition process, encouraged to find and improve his/her own writing style, and guided in the analysis and evaluation of his own and others’ writings. The second semester is a continuation of 1301 with emphasis on the study and critical evaluation of modern literature, primarily from American writers of fiction, poetry, and drama. Oral and written communication, a research paper, and elementary original critical evaluation techniques are used.

8293 Applied English 31 creditPrerequisite: teacher approvalThe student works with advanced language usage and composition skills while gaining a greater

1424 English 41 credit Prerequisite: English 3The student completes the four-year program of English by studying selections from British Literature. Writing skills are coordinated with the literary study and also related to practical needs in daily life. Special attention is given to research techniques and the gathering of information for a formal research presentation. Student will be encouraged to use word processing for writing activities.

1516 Business English1 creditPrerequisite: 12 th , English III (BIM I recommended). This course will take the place of English

4, if graduating on the foundation graduation plan. Students recognize, evaluate, and prepare for a rapidly evolving global business environment that requires flexibility and adaptability. Students apply technical skills to address business

applications of emerging technologies. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communication, and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment. Students are

expected to plan, draft, and complete written compositions on a regular basis. Students edit their papers for clarity, engaging language, and the correct use of the conventions and mechanics

of written English and produce final, error-free drafts for business reproduction.

1414 AP English 41 creditPrerequisite: AP English 3, parental permission, teacher approval. Must score a 3 on AP English

3 exam.Using college level expectations, this course emphasizes wide reading and analysis of world

literature with a focus on British Literature, including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Students analyze literary elements and writer’s style related to purpose, audience, and theme. Literary analysis will also be a major focus of the written compositions and research. Students will use proof, advanced syntax, and vocabulary in compositions written on demand and using writing process. Students prepare to complete the Advanced Placement Examination in English Literature and Composition.

1493 Dual Credit English 41 creditPrerequisite: 11 th or 12 th , TSI exempt through EOC/SAT/ACT or TSI, parental permission with

tuition paid to TVCC. Student will be concurrently enrolled at TVCC for ENGL 1301/1302.

1494 Dual Credit English 4 1 credit Prerequisite: 12 th graders, completed ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302. Student will be concurrently enrolled at TVCC for ENGL 2322 and ENGL 2323. Parental permission, tuition paid to TVCC. The first semester is a study of British literature from the Middle Ages through the Restoration and the 18th Century with selections from but not limited to Malory, Marlowe, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. A fully documented research paper is required as part of the course work. The second semester begins with the Romantics, this course continues the study of British masterworks through the 19th and 20th centuries to the present including but not limited to selections from Blake, Wordsworth, Byron Shelley, Keats, and Conrad. A fully documented research paper or a critical analysis of one or more of the poets from the Romantic era will be required.

1425 College Prep English1 credit Prerequisite: 12 th . Student may be placed in this course by administration. This course will fulfill the requirements for the 4 th year of English. Students identified by certain criteria may be required to enroll in, and complete, a college preparatory English class that has been developed in conjunction with local community colleges.

1021 Spanish 11 creditPrerequisite: none The first year of Spanish includes basic listening and speaking skills, vocabulary acquisition and grammar study. The audio-lingual method of instruction is emphasized. Students are introduced to the Spanish culture.

1022 Spanish 21 credit Prerequisite: Spanish 1Improving listening comprehension and speaking skill is the aim of the second year of Spanish. Study of the Spanish culture continues.

1023 Spanish 31 creditPrerequisite: Spanish 2, teacher approval Conversational Spanish developing vocabulary, grammar and syntax skills, and reading and expression are the basic goals of the course.

1024 Spanish 41 credit Prerequisite: Spanish 3, Accumulative Spanish III final average of 75 or above, teacher approval. An advanced Spanish course introducing students to additional forms and tenses used in upper

level Spanish speaking classes. Additional culture, grammar and Spanish literature will be introduced.

4322 World History1 creditPrerequisite: noneThis course includes the study of history and development of a variety of world cultures, past and present. Opportunities are provided for students to compare and analyze various ways of life and cultural patterns, emphasizing the diversity and commonality of human experiences and the understanding of how these patterns occurred over time. A study of contemporary world affairs is an essential part of the course.

4325 Pre-AP World History1 creditPrerequisite: Teacher approval.Pre-AP World History will be a challenging course with considerable reading, analyzing, and

interpreting different sources throughout history. There will be a major emphasis on reading and analyzing primary and secondary sources, as well as writing major analytical essays. Due to the

additional content and depth of study recommended by the College Board, the pace of Pre-AP social studies courses is more demanding than that of regular academic classes.

Assessments are rigorous, and are designed to prepare students for upper level college course work. The majority of the course grade will be determined by test and daily grades. Written assessments will be either document-based questions in which primary and/or secondary source documents are used or fact-based questions. Students may be required to read one novel each semester. Students should expect an average of 30-60 minutes of homework daily.

4510 ****US History1 credit Prerequisite: World HistoryThe content of American History covers significant people, issues and events after 1877, emphasizing present day issues that have their roots in the past. The major topics of this course are the effects of Reconstruction on the South; the rise of big business and labor; the West; the Populist Movement; immigration; US as a world power; the Progressive Movement; World War I; the Roaring Twenties; the Thirties; rise of dictators; World War II; the Cold War; and the struggles of contemporary society at home and abroad.

4511 ****Pre-AP US History1 credit Prerequisite: Pre-AP World History, teacher approval This course will be a challenging course with considerable reading, analyzing, and interpreting

4724 US Government½ creditPrerequisite: 12 th , World Geography and/or World History, US History This course provides an opportunity to explore the political and governing processes, elements of political theories, and governmental structures. Emphasis is placed on concepts of political participation, leadership, decision-making, political institutions, nature of laws, and the rights

4824 Economics (Emphasis on Free Enterprise System)½ creditPrerequisite: 12 th , World History and/or World Geography, US History This course is a comprehensive study of the American economic system. It includes the study of the basic concepts of economics, the market system, labor unions, money and banking, business cycles, the role of government in a free enterprise system and comparative economic systems.

6064 Dual Credit Government (2nd semester, paired with 6065 on one line)½ credit Prerequisite: 12 th , 85 average in English III and US History, TSI exempt through EOC/SAT/ACT or the TSI test. Parental permission required and tuition is paid to TVCC.This is an on-line course, designed to give students a critical perspective on politics and

government. This course involves the study of general concepts used to interpret United States Politics and the analysis of specific case studies.

6065 Dual Credit Economics (1st semester, paired with 6064 on one line)½ credit Prerequisite: 12 th , 85 average in English III and US History, TSI exempt through EOC/SAT/ACT or the TSI test. Parental permission required and tuition is paid to TVCC.This is an on- line course, that will include a study of economic problems such as inflation,

unemployment, and economic stabilization by monetary and fiscal policy.

3211 ****Biology1 creditPrerequisite: noneThis laboratory-oriented course provides a study of cell structure and functions, the molecular basis of life, basic metabolic processes, microorganisms and a survey of the plant kingdom. Other topics include reproduction and development, taxonomy, and a survey of kingdoms, systems, homeostasis and ecology.

3212 ****Pre-AP Biology1 creditPrerequisite: teacher approval This course will cover all the topics covered in regular Biology but will be covered in more depth. A much deeper understanding will be achieved, and more advanced labs will be conducted. This course will prepare students to further their study in an advanced placement course.

3213 AP Biology 1 creditPrerequisite: 11 th -12 th , chemistry, teacher approval This course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology course. Topics to be covered are (1) molecules and cells, (2) heredity and evolution, and (3) organisms and populations. A grasp of science as a process rather than an accumulation of facts and experience in scientific inquiry will be essential ingredients in this course.

3322 Integrated Physics and Chemistry (recommended for most 10th grade students)1 creditPrerequisite: Biology 1Students study the measurements of fundamental units of length, mass and time as well as derived units such as area, density, volume and speed. The course continues with a study of forces, simple machines and energy. Students will investigate temperature and heat, solubility of solids and gases, and chemical reaction including synthesis and decomposition. Atomic theory is introduced and the structure of atoms is studied.

3715 Chemistry1 creditPrerequisite: Biology and Algebra 1, teacher approval This course is designed to provide an understanding of the major principles and concepts of chemistry. Topics will include atomic structure, chemical names and formulas, chemical reaction, bonding, behavior of gases and equilibrium.

3713 Pre-AP Chemistry1 creditPre-AP Biology and Algebra I, OR Biology and Algebra I if a 90 or above was earned in both courses, and teacher approval from science department. Test scores will be considered. The major principles and concepts of chemistry are expanded to advanced topics. Deeper understanding of topics is attained and preparations are made to continue the study of Chemistry in an Advanced Placement course.

3714 AP Chemistry1 credit Prerequisite: 11 th and 12 th grade. Chemistry, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, parental permission, teacher approvalStudents study chemistry of the elements in greater detail. In addition to laboratory assignments, there is some experience with instrumental methods of chemical analysis. Selected topics in organic chemistry, biochemistry and nuclear chemistry are discussed.

3719 AP Chemistry Lab paired with AP Chemistry1 credit Prerequisite: same as AP Chemistry, this course will not be calculated into the student’s G.P.A. This course must be taken concurrently with AP Chemistry.

3514 Physics 1 creditPrerequisite: Chemistry, currently enrolled in or completed Algebra 2Students examine the properties of matter and how the physical laws of the universe affect them. Topics include velocity, acceleration, force, vectors, heat, temperature, nuclear and atomic

physics. Phenomena related to light, sound and electricity are discussed. Laboratory explorations are included.

3723 Anatomy and Physiology

1 creditPrerequisites: 11 th -12 th , completed Chemistry Topics include: needs of the human body and the processes through which these needs are fulfilled; the responses of the human body to internal and external forces; the body processes that maintain homeostasis; the electrical conduction processes and interactions; the body’s transport systems; environmental factors that affect the human body; the comparison of anatomical structures to physiological functions; and the process of reproduction, growth, and development.

3727 Astronomy1 creditPrerequisites:11 th -12 th , must have completed Biology and IPC or Chemistry. Students conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students study the following topics: astronomy in civilization, patterns and objects in the sky, our place in space, the moon, reasons for the seasons, planets, the sun, stars, galaxies, cosmology, and space exploration. Students who successfully complete Astronomy will acquire knowledge within a conceptual framework, conduct observations of the sky, work collaboratively, and develop critical-thinking skills.

7158 Advanced Plant and Soil Science1 creditPrerequisites: 11 th -12th grade, must have completed a minimum of 1 credit from AFNR cluster. Student must have completed Biology and IPC or Chemistry. Counselor approval required.Plant and Soil Science provides a way of learning about the natural world. Students should know how plant and soil science has influenced a vast body of knowledge, that there are still applications to be discovered, and that plant and soil science is the basis for many other fields of science. The student, for at least 40% of instructional time, conducts field experiments, laboratory investigations, or approved supervised experience programs using safe, environmentally appropriate, and ethical practices. The student analyzes plant and soil scienceas related to plant and soil relationships affecting the production of food and fiber.

7159 Advanced Animal Science1 credit Prerequisites: 11 th -12 th grade, must have completed a minimum of 1 credit from AFNR cluster. Student must have completed Biology and IPC or Chemistry. Counselor approval is required.This course will prepare students for careers in the field of animal science. Students will acquire knowledge and skills related to animal systems, and develop knowledge and skills regarding

To prepare for success, students need opportunities to learn, reinforce, apply, and transfer their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings. This course examines the interrelatedness of human, scientific, and technological dimensions of livestock production. Instruction is designed to allow for the application of scientific and technological aspects of animal science through field and laboratory experience.

2121 ****Algebra 11 credit In Algebra I, students will study linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and their related transformations, equations, and associated solutions. Students will connect functions and their associated solutions in both mathematical and real-world situations. Students will use technology to collect and explore data and analyze statistical relationships. In addition, students will study polynomials of degree one and two, radical expressions, sequences, and laws of exponents. Students will generate and solve linear systems with two equations and two variables and will create new functions through transformations.

8191 ****Applied Algebra 11 creditPrerequisite: teacher approval The same concepts are covered as Algebra I with instruction modified as required by individual student needs.

2322 Geometry1 credit Prerequisite: Algebra 1This course provides an introduction to the structure of geometry, basic geometric figures and concepts, and to formal proof, properties of angles, perpendicular and parallel lines and planes, congruent triangles and their applications, similar polygons, right triangles, circles, areas and volume, constructions, coordinate geometry, plane transformations and mappings.

2312 Pre-AP Geometry1 creditPrerequisite: Algebra 1, teacher approvalIn addition to the basic understandings of geometry described above, the Pre-AP curriculum will have added depth and rigor, with multiple representations of problems. Students will be expected to do more work outside of class.

8192 Applied Geometry 1 credit Prerequisite: teacher approvalThe same concepts are covered as Geometry with instruction modified as required by individual

student needs.

Prerequisite: Geometry. This course is a requirement for Distinguished Achievement. Students will build on the knowledge and skills for Algebra I. Students will broaden their knowledge of quadratic functions, exponential functions, and systems of equations. Students will study logarithmic, square root, cubic, cube root, absolute value, rational functions, and their related equations. Students will connect functions to their inverses and associated equations and solutions in both mathematical and real-world situations. In addition, students will extend their knowledge of data analysis and numeric and algebraic methods.

2513 Pre-AP Algebra 21 credit Prerequisite: Algebra I, teacher approval. This course is a requirement for Distinguished Achievement. In addition to the basic understandings of Algebra II described above, the Pre-AP curriculum will have added depth and rigor, with multiple representations of problems. Students will be expected to do more work outside of class.

8193 Applied Algebra 2 1 credit Prerequisite: teacher approval The same concepts are covered as Algebra II with instruction modified as required by individual student needs.

2613 Honors Pre-Calculus1 creditPrerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, teacher approval Precalculus is the preparation for calculus. The course approaches topics from a function point of view, where appropriate, and is designed to strengthen and enhance conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning used when modeling and solving mathematical and real-worldproblems. Students systematically work with functions and their multiple representations.

2813 Algebraic Reasoning 1 credit Prerequisite: Algebra IStudents will build on the knowledge and skills for Algebra I, continue with the development of mathematical reasoning related to algebraic understandings and processes, and deepen a foundation for studies in subsequent mathematics course. Students will broaden their knowledge of functions, and relationships, including linear, quadratic, square root, rational, cubic, cube root, exponential, absolute value, and logarithmic functions.

2814 Financial Math 1 credit Prerequisite: 11 th -12 th , Algebra 1. This course satisfies the 3 rd year mathematics graduation

requirement but will not count as 4 th year. Financial Mathematics is a course about personal money management. Students will apply critical-thinking skills to analyze personal financial decisions based on current and projected economic factors. When possible, students will apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace.

2714 College Prep Math 1 credit Prerequisite: 12 th graders. This course will fulfill the requirements for the 4 th year of Math. Students identified by certain criteria may be required to enroll in, and complete, a college preparatory Math class that has been developed in conjunction with local community colleges.

1495 College Algebra ½ credit Prerequisite: Algebra IIStudents must meet TVCC admission requirements and pay TVCC tuition. Students are required to purchase/rent a textbook for dual credit courses. This course is the standard course in college-level algebra and is taken for both high school and college credit. Students analyze contemporary issues and controversial issues as a means to find solutions and examine truths. The definition of debate is “organized argument,” and this course is excellent preparation for college and professional careers. Preparation and presentation of debates are required in class and at speech tournaments. This class is a hands-on preparation for contest class. Students enrollment in this class will require their involvement in competitive UIL or NSDA activities. This means that students will be required to attend at least three tournaments per semester.
