You can sit underneath the light and with a magnifying glass, I guarantee it, you can spend two or three hours on that without blinking an eye. I bet you I got 10, 15 hours in that, looking at all the buildings and where they were, and the ones that are all gone.” 1876 HOUSEHOLD MANUAL “It was put out for the centennial in 1876. All the forefathers of Dubuque, their wives put their favorite recipes in there. Most of the stuff, believe it or not, you couldn’t even buy the ingredients anymore.” MARTIN ANDELFINGER TIRE COVER “I was at a guy’s house, buying some junk from him, out in his old barn, and I saw this there. And I didn’t know who this guy was. My wife and I spent a half a day down at the library going through city directories and films from the newspapers. We found out he was married in Dubuque in 1929. He was an alderman in Dubuque from 1934 to 1936. Then he was president of the Dubuque Licorice Factory. It’s a tire cover for the rumble seat of an old car.” TRENKLE’S MEMORABILIA “Of all the years and the millions of things that I bought, I only found three pieces with Trenkle’s name on it. Everybody came into town and they’d go to Trenkle’s. You’d get a little box, about 10, 12 inches square and about five inches deep, and they’d pack that with ice and sausage. The sausage was so good. I can remember going in there when I was a kid and they’d always have the plate sitting up there with little pieces of sausage on it.” WOODEN EGG CARTON “I think it’s the cutest piece of plain, old history. In the early days, when you went to a store to get your eggs, you took your own little carton along and they’d take 12 eggs and put them in there. And that’s how you carried your eggs home.” DUBUQUE MUSIC HOUSE RECORD “That’s early. I think that’s back in the ’20s and ’30s. These 78 records are real old. They only used one side of them at those times. These are the ones that are made like slate.” ED WYNN GRAND OPERA HOUSE TICKET “A friend of mine was down there when they were remodeling the old Grand Theater. And there was a great big Dumpster down there, parked in that alley. They were just throwing everything in the Dumpster. And he saw that and he grabbed it for me. God only knows what was in that Dumpster.” PEDDLER LICENSE “The peddlers used to have a box with bicycle wheels on it and a handle on it. They’d push it down the alleys and they’d go through people’s garbage. They would pick up stuff and sell it for scrap or whatever. I didn’t even know they had to have a license for that. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen in my life.” BENTLEY BROS. CIRCUS POSTER “We had a lot of circuses in Dubuque through the years. Used to be out by the Melody Mill, down on Fourth Street by the ballpark, down on Main Street in later years. Continued from Page 1E
