The attack triggered a two- hour long gun battle in the worst-affected Pidmel-Polam- palli area of the district. Offi- cials said a group of about 300 Maoists opened heavy fire on the police team at around 9:15 am. “Seven of our troops have been martyred, while about 12 were injured in the encounter,” Additional Director General of Police (anti-Maoist operations) R K Vij said. The 70 member STF squad was confronted with a volley of bullets in the jungle which is at the south-axis of the Dornapal- Chintagufa area where several ambushes and killings of secu- rity forces have taken place in the past, including the most deadly attack when 76 person- nel were killed there in 2010. Officials, however, denied us- age of Improvised Explosive Devices by the red ultras. A “good number” of weapons that belonged to the security forces were looted by the Maoists, they said. The encounter has heralded the first major Tactical Counter Offensive Campaign (TCOC) operation which is conducted by Maoists to gain ground every summer. Officials en- gaged in anti-Maoist opera- tions said TCOC began in late March in the state and this is the first big casualty on the po- lice side. While an ALH-Dhruv heli- copter ferried the injured to hospitals in Jagdalpur and Raipur, the bodies of slain STF personnel are expected to be flown in on Sunday as bad weather and rain has restricted the movement of choppers in Kankerlanka. Two teams of the Central Re- serve Police Force (CRPF), who have a camp nearby, were rushed to the spot for assisting the squad and to launch “cor- don-and-search” operations, they said. » Maoists, Page 9 Chennai Super Kings’ opener Brendon McCullum pulls one to the fence en route to his unbeaten 100 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. On day-two of his France vis- it, Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the World War I memorial in the northern city of Lille to pay homage to 10,000 Indian sol- diers who died fighting Ger- many alongside France in the war between 1914-18. Laying a wreath at the mar- tyr’s memorial, the Prime Minister spent about 50 min- utes as several Indians gath- ered raised ‘Vande Matram’slo- gans. Accompanied by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, Modi arrived here in Air India One and went straight to the facility of Airbus, one of the two major global manufacturers of aircraft and to a tour of the plant. “We are honoured to host Prime Minister Modi in Toulouse and convey to him our desire to forge a stronger industrial bond with India. In- dia already takes a centre-stage role in our international activi- ties and we want to increase its contribution to our products,” said Airbus Group CEO Tom Enders, who received the Indi- an leader. “We support Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make in India’ call and we are ready to manufacture in India, for India and the world,” he added. MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted, “500 per cent increase in 5 years. @Air- bus to PM @narendramodi: In- dian outsourcing to increase from USD 400 mil to USD 2 billion.” Indian operations In India, Airbus Group already operates two engineering cen- tres — one focused on civil avi- ation and the other one de- fence — besides, a research and technology (R&T) centre which together employs over 400 highly-qualified people. The group’s senior represen- tative conveyed their decision to expand these centres so that they can take on comprehen- sive design responsibilities for future Airbus group pro- grammes. Prime Minister Modi was given a tour of the Airbus A380 final assembly line. Currently, four A380 flights serve India daily. “Much larger markets are waiting to be tapped, the potential for A380 to help In- dian carriers win greater multi- national market share with a flagship aircraft is enormous,” an Airbus press release said. After the tour of the memo- rial accompanied by French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Dian, Modi wrote his thoughts in the visitors’ book hailing the sacrifice of the Indian soldiers. “Either being slain you will attain the heavenly world or by gaining victory you will enjoy the earth.
