Greetings of Peace. We just completed the Christmas Season in church this past weekend. The stores have been decked out for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and I have also seen some accoutrements for Easter! Amazing. Looking ahead, the next “Season” (in church) is Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17. That is one month away! It is interesting that we are thinking about Lent when we just “finished” Christmas! Until we begin Lent, we are in the midst of “Ordinary Time” in our “Church Liturgical Year.” We also know it is the Season of Winter!

Here is a “short lesson” about The Liturgical Year. Our “church calendar” begins in Advent and continues through the Christmas Season. The time after the Christmas Season, until Lent, is named “Ordinary Time” - which continues until we begin Lent and celebrate the Easter Season. The time after the Seasons of Lent and Easter (until the next Advent Season) is again called “Ordinary Time.”

However, the term “Ordinary” does not mean “regular” or “unspectacular.” Rather, it is derived from the word we use for “counting” (as in 1, 2, 3, etc.). These are “ordinal numbers” (if we remember our elementary school mathematics.). We basically count the Sundays and Weeks of the Year that are not Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter Time. So now, since it is not Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter, we are in “Ordinary Time.” Remember, though, with our faith, nothing is Ordinary. We truly believe that Jesus, who was born for us, died for us, is raised and lifted up to heaven. He promises us the gift of eternal life. We celebrate this “Joyful Mystery” each Sunday and it is indeed something special. “Extraordinary!” In this “ordinary time” we should remember that this “child who was born for our salvation” is “all grown up” and teaches us how to live and love. In a New Year, Pope Francis asked all people of faith to focus on building a peaceful and welcoming world around us - and particularly in our own lives and relationships. The Holy Father suggested that we all set aside a moment of silence each to be with God - and to leave behind the burdens of the past and to start over from the things that really matter. I say, “Amen!”

Have a great week. Blessings and Peace. Fr. Gary
