Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2020
for members of our Collaborative who are ill,
remembering especially: Carmen, Karen, Ben, Kip,
Chrissy, Jeremiah, Sandy, Christopher, Kim, Paula, Fred, Bernie,
James, Gretchen,
David, Luke, Alice and John
whose funeral Mass and service were offered at our
Collaborative. May their souls, and the souls of all our
faithful departed share in the fullness of life and peace
with
Pope Francis' far-reaching encyclical, Laudato Si: Care for Our
Common Home, challenges us in 2020 more than ever before. In our
presentation, we will explore traditional
Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and conversion of heart as
we listen to and respond to the "cry of the Earth and the cry of
the poor." Learn how you and your parish can join a movement to
protect Our Common Home and all who live there. Presenter: Fran
Ludwig, Chair of the Boston Catholic Climate Movement; Leader of
Lexington Catholic Community Faith and Environment Group; and BC
Alumni for Climate Justice.
–
God’s plea is straightforward and simple: he wants you close to
him. He yearns for you as a father or mother longs for a lost
child. God is asking you to stop what you normally do and take the
time this Lent to discover what He means in your life and what He
could mean. This year, the centerpiece of our Collaborative Lenten
journey is a 7-week small group program from Evangelical Catholic
that will help you seek Him as He is seeking you. The weekly
sessions, which begin the week of February 24, use the Sunday Mass
readings for Lent to help you enter into the mystery of Christ’s
life, suffering, and resurrection, the source of our salvation. A
group of volunteers from our Collaborative have undertaken a
6-month program of weekly formation and training to become small
group facilitators, enabling us to offer a wide variety of small
group options. If you would like to register for a small group,
there will be registration cards in the back of the church or you
can go online to either parish website. If you have any questions,
please contact Anne Mears at [email protected] or
781-235-1060.
“Yet even now,” says the Lord, “return to me with all your
heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your
hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and
merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of
evil.
- Joel 2:12-13

Low Gluten hosts are available at every Mass in the
Collaborative to our parishioners who have a gluten allergy or
sensitivity so that everyone can participate fully in the Banquet
of the Lord. Please join the line to receive from the main
celebrant of the Mass and indicate to him that you wish to receive
a low gluten host. If the main celebrant is not distributing
communion then please join one of the lines at the center of the
church where one of the Eucharistic Ministers will be holding the
pyx with low gluten hosts.

In the Gospel today, Jesus says, "You are the light of the
world." He is calling us to live our Christian vocation in words
and deeds. Be a "light" to those living in poverty and in a world
of darkness by giving a donation to the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul. There are donations boxes in the
foyer of each church. The next meeting of the Saint John and Saint
Paul Society of Saint Vincent de Paul will be held on Thursday,
February 13 at 6:45pm at Saint Paul Hall. All are welcome to grow
in holiness.
This Weekend, February 8 and 9
Collection of non-perishable items to assist our sister parish
Saint Katharine Drexel in Roxbury will take place Feb 8 and 9.
Please bring your donations to the St. John Glen Road entrance. For
information, contact Angela Spinale at 781-431-0008.
“My spirit was broken and as far as I knew beyond repair. I was
consumed with feelings of remorse. During the retreat, I realized
the lasting impact of forgiveness. I knew God had forgiven me, and
now I needed to forgive myself.” – A Project Rachel Retreat

a special invitation to women suffering from the pain of a past

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2020
Have you wondered about spiritual direction? Wondering if it is
for you?
Spiritual direction encourages everyone to explore a closer
relationship with God. In the midst of a busy life, it provides an
opportunity to notice God's action in our lives here and now. It
involves spending time reflecting on the experiences of daily life
to recognize God’s constant accompaniment. A Spiritual Director is
trained and certified to help others develop a rich prayer life and
promote spiritual healing with our God of love and mercy. It is not
about being directed as much as it is about being invited to draw
closer to one's true identity in God. If you are interested in
Spiritual Direction, the Collaborative has a list of certified
directors who are also parishioners. If you are looking for the
right fit for you contact the parish offices for details!
Cursillo, pronounced "cur-see-yo", began in Spain in 1939 and
has spread throughout the world. The word "Cursillo" means, "little
course." The cursillo is a little course in Christianity.
In Cursillo, you encounter Jesus Christ in a small community of
the Church, in order to deepen your own faith and to strengthen
your ability to be a witness of Christ in the world. The weekends
run from Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon and are held at
the Campion Center in Weston. The next weekends upcoming are:
Women’s Weekend: March 5-9, 2020 Men’s Weekend: April 23-26, 2020

"Bakhita," born in Darfur, (now western Sudan) Africa around
1869 was not her real name, rather a name given to her by Arab
slave traders who stole her from her home and sold her into
slavery. Her parents, affluent members of the Daju people, named
their daughter in the Dar Fur Daju tradition, but the agony of
enslavement caused the seven-year-old to forget her real name. In
addition to receiving an unknown name, Bakhita's captors made her
adapt to Islam. After being sold to wealthy Arabs across the land,
a Turkish general, her fourth owner who subscribed to the tortured
practice of branding slaves, ordered that patterns be cut into her
skin with a knife and the wounds be filled with salt. Bakhita
received 114 such painful imprints upon her body. In 1883, Bakhita
is sold a fifth time, to Callisto Legnani, an Italian Vice Counsel,
a kind man, and the two eventually made their way to Genoa in 1885
where Bakhita is given to a friend's wife. She becomes a nanny to
the woman's daughter and when the wife traveled to meet her
husband, Bakhita and the child lived with the Canossian Sisters in
Venice where Bakhita first learned about Christianity and
converted. Refusing to leave, Bakhita remained with the nuns and in
1890 was baptized, given the name Josephine Margaret, and received
Communion from Giuseppe Sarto, then Archbishop of Venice who later
became Pope Pius X. Sister Josephine Bakhita took her vows in 1896
and assigned to the province of Vicenza in northern Italy, where
she remain the rest of her life. She exemplified cheerfulness and a
sweet disposition to everyone she met and spent her time speaking
of her life experience and training nuns to work in Africa. She
often talked about acceptance of suffering and credits her
captivity with opening the door to her becoming a Christian and a
nun. Canonized in 2000, Saint Josephine Bakhita is the patron saint
of Sudan and human trafficking survivors. Her feast day, February
8, is a world-wide day of prayer against human trafficking and any
form of human slavery.

Baptized into Christ, we are a community of believers, bonded by
our desire to learn and to live the Gospel message. As a
Eucharistic people, we share a commitment to foster our personal
and communal growth in faith and to witness to Christ’s presence by
our service to those in need, both within and beyond our parish
community.
In response to many reports of cold and flu illness throughout
the region, the decision has been made to eliminate the
