CHURCH SQUIRRELS There were 5 houses of religion in a small Texas town: The Baptist Church the Methodist Church, The Presbyter-ian Church, Roman Catholic Church and The Synagogue. Each church and Synagogue was overrun with pesky squirrels. One day, Presbyterian Church called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels and after much prayer and consideration they determined that the squir-rels were predestined to be there and shouldn’t interfere with God’s divine will. In The BAPTIST CHURCH the squirrels had taken up habitation in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a cover on the baptistery and drown the squirrels in it The squirrels escaped some-how and there were twice as many the next week. The Methodists got together and decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creation. So they hu-manely trapped the Squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back. But -- The Catholic Church came up with the best and most effective solution. They baptized the squir-rel and registered them as members of the Church. Now they only see them on Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Easter. Not much was heard about Jewish Synagogue, but they took one squirrel and had a short service with him called bris or circumcision, and they haven't seen a squirrel on the property since.

Faith Formation News Welcome back everyone!! Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday under the theme of “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you”. Knights of Columbus Rosary Rally Carmel Council will have a Rosary Rally on September 27, 2020 at the Leonia Police Department at 5 pm. MORTAL SIN The first step in carrying out the Will of God is to avoid mortal sin. Where there is a habit of mortal sin, WHICH ONE DOES NOT INTEND TO GIVE UP, there is no spiritual life. When this condition exists, the soul of such a one is dead. If a man is in that state, he has urgent need of making a good confession and of making the decision to fight manfully against his bad habits. The DECISION to avoid mortal sin is vital to the spiritual life. The fight may not be easy; he may perhaps even fall again and again; but he must be resolutely determined that even if he falls down again, HE WILL NOT STAY DOWN, and he must follow out that determination grimly. The argument that since he continues to fall again and again, what is the good of going to confession, is simply not a valid or sensible argument. The argument that the confession of the same sin over and over again is embarrassing and boring, is not a convincing argument. If a person is the source of one's sin and the cause of one's sin, then one must decide between that person and God. If a place is the source of one's sin and the cause of one's sin, then one must decide between that place and God. If a thing is the source of one's sin, and the cause of one's sin, then one must decided between that thing and God! It is quite impossible to possess both. Mortal sin must be regarded as the greatest possible evil - one to be avoided at all or any cost. On this point there can be no compromise. An offense against God is an offense against God, and no human speculation or analysis can change the fact that GOD MUST NEVER BE OFFENDED. Neither can any human agency or tribunal remove sinfulness from an offense which God has preordained to be sinful and offensive. The law of God is unchangeable, and its application is not open to anyone's private interpretation.

CONFESSION/RECONCILATION This sacrament is offered EVERY Saturday from 4:00PM to 4:30PM and Monday-Friday at 8:30AM as well as eve-ry First Friday at 6:30PM. How to Participate at Holy Mass It is a common practice to limit our prayers to petition. This is a mistake. We owe God, first of all, adoration; secondly, grati-tude. We can never thank Him sufficiently, though we were to employ eternity in so doing, for the innumerable gifts, material and spiritual, temporal and eternal, which He bestows upon us. Life, redemption, our Catholic faith, preservation from grave sin, the grace of conversion, health, relatives, and friends – therefore, to thank God by means of the Holy Mass. After ado-ration and thanksgiving comes atonement. Prostrate at the foot of Calvary’s cross, down which the most precious Blood of Jesus Christ flows from His gaping wounds, we should beg pardon for our sins, which have thus nailed Christ to the cross. Let us ask Him to pour His precious Blood over our souls that they may be cleansed from their polluting stains. Prayer of petition should not be forgotten. In it, we beg of God for the favors of which we stand in need.

In an 1858 missive to Rome, Bishop John Neumann asked to leave his See or Diocese, as he felt he lacked the intelligence and holiness for the job and felt unfit for the 'cultured' people in the (then) Diocese of Phila-delphia. He asked the Pope to 'split' his diocese, which had grown too large, and accept his offer to be 'demoted' to one of the new dioceses, which he proposed be centered in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and Wilming-ton, North Carolina. (Neither city would be named a See; the new Sees became Raleigh NC in 1932 and Allentown PA in 1961.) Humble and intensely concerned for those entrusted to his care, the future saint then offered to the now-Blessed Pope Pius IX his resignation from the episco-pacy! At the time there was much tension between Rome and the Ameri-can Bishops: European clerics had yet to accept the USA's independence; Rome equated us with places like the little Canary Islands, not as a fledg-ing world power; and Rome was suspicious of the intermingling of U.S. Catholics with non-Catholics. So the American Bishops met three times in Baltimore, in 1852, 1866 and 1884, to address these concerns; at the 3rd Council of Baltimore they approved and mandated the well-known Baltimore Catechism for instruction. Amid all this turmoil, Neumann ministered. On March 28, 1811 in Budweis, Germany (home of a well-known beer) John Nepomucene Neumann was born to simple working-class parents. Upon completing seminary training, where he became intrigued with tales about the American missions, he was shocked when his bishop postponed ordinations because he had too many priests! So in 1836, without much money, or bidding his parents farewell, or proper docu-mentation from his bishop, or a firm commitment from an American bish-op to ordain him, he set off for America. The Bishop of New York, in desperate need for priests for his sprawling diocese, which included all NY State and the northern half of NJ, ordained him and sent him off to Buffalo, NY. Then his health failed, due to loneliness, anxiety and (perhaps) scrupulosity over the validity of his ordination since he was technically AWOL. So he left diocesan priesthood and became the first American novice to an Order that only recently came to the USA: the Redemptorists. After taking vows he served as pastor for 5 years and then became superior of the Order in the USA. Unhappy with the financial and person-nel work demanded in that role, he returned to parish life - and in 1852 was appointed the 4th bishop of Philadelphia. Some bishops objected to his appointment, citing his poor English speaking skills, lack of social graces and (some say) his German ancestry; only two bishops attended his ordination; none came to his installation as Bishop of Philadelphia. Despite little fraternal support - and so much criticism of his administra-tive skiIIs that Rome appointed a coadjutor (another bishop whose ap-proval he needed for major decisions and with whom he had some “tension”) - he strove to be a priestly shepherd; he heard confessions in many languages, visited the sick, taught children and traveled long distances to celebrate Confirmation. Indifferent to the honors and privileges of his office, he preferred to spend his free time at the local Redemptorist house doing kitchen chores. A strong advocate of parochial schools at a time when our public schools were often virulently anti-Catholic and promoted Protestantism, he brought seven religious communities to his diocese and was instru-mental in establishing a flourishing local community of Franciscan Sis-ters. At the age of 49, Neumann collapsed suddenly on a street in Phila-delphia and died, apparently of a heart attack, on January 5, 1860. Can-onized by Pope Paul VI on June 19, 1977, his feast day is January 5, and he is a patron saint of children, Catholic Schools, Eucharistic devotions, priests, religious, immigrants and those in need of healing.
