Prayer of Thanksgiving God of all blessings, source of all life, giver of all grace: We thank you for the gift of life: for the breath that sustains life, for the food of this earth that nurtures life, for the love of family and friends without which there would be no life. We thank you for the mystery of creation: for the beauty that the eye can see, for the joy that the ear may hear, for the unknown that we cannot behold filling the universe with wonder, for the expanse of space that draws us beyond the definitions of our selves. We thank you for setting us in communities: for families who nurture our becoming, for friends who love us by choice, for companions at work, who share our burdens and daily tasks, for strangers who welcome us into their midst, for people from other lands who call us to grow in understanding, for children who lighten our moments with delight, for the unborn, who offer us hope for the future. We thank you for this day: for life and one more day to love, for opportunity and one more day to work for justice and peace, for neighbors and one more person to love and by whom be loved, for your grace and one more experience of your presence, for your promise: to be with us, to be our God, and to give salvation. For these, and all blessings, we give you thanks, eternal, loving God, through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. - Vienna Cobb Anderson AdministratorsMessage Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), We have had a wonderful start to the new school year with many exciting events and activities happening in and around the school community. September Virtue of the Month

To begin the new school year, we’ll focus our attention on the first of our virtues – Hospitality. Hospitality is shown when we welcome guests — including strangers and enemies — into our lives with kindness. When we are hospi-table, we are open toward others, we focus on the positive, and we believe the universe is basically a friendly place.

Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations

To support our faith development and Catholic Board Learning Cycle, we infuse our Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations in all aspects of Catholic Education from Kindergarten to Grade 12. As a school we work to support a deeper understanding of these expectations and of our witness to faith. To-gether, as a community we work to embed the seven expectations to support the Catholic Education of our students as they journey through our schools through to vocation.

I I am a peace-maker

I am fair

I am forgiving

Terry Fox Run

On Friday September 29th all staff and students at St. Maurice took part

in the annual Terry Fox walk in honour of Terry. We have a long

association with The Terry Fox Foundation and believe that our involvement will launch a successful school year. We are very proud of

our contribution to cancer research; to date, over $97, 000 has been

raised by the pupils in this school community for cancer research since 1989. Please send all donations as soon as possible. Let’s reach our goal

of $20,000.

School Hours Supervision

Supervision in the school yard begins at 8:15 am. Please DO NOT drop off your children prior to that time as they will not be supervised. The doors of St. Maurice are open to parents who wish to visit or confer with staff, however, an appointment is necessary, as the classroom teacher’s first priority is teaching the class during regular school hours. Please report to the office upon entering the school.

Nutrition Program

Our Nutrition program is off to a wonderful start with many healthy and nutritious snacks having been served to the students. If you would like to make a donation to the Nutrition Program we ask that you make cheques payable to , “St. Maurice Catholic School Snack Program”. Any financial assistance is greatly appreciated.

Allergies In The Classroom

As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that St. Maurice is an allergen aware

school. There are pupils and staff in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening aller-

gies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products. Exposure to even the smallest quantities

can cause severe life threatening reactions. Please inform the school/teacher of any allergies your

child may have. We also ask that in an attempt to ensure safety parents/guardians refrain from

sending any lunches or snacks that contain peanut/ nut or peanut/nut byproducts which could po-

tentially harm a pupil. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of the food

restrictions. Please do not send food for birthdays or special occasions. There are many alternatives such as stick-

ers and pencils. If you have any questions, please talk to your child’s teacher or the school staff. We look forward

to your co-operation in making this a safe year for all of our pupils.

New Equipment At the end of the last school year, St. Maurice's CSPC committee put forth $750 to purchase new equipment for our gym and playground. Our students have been making great use of the new bouncy four-square balls, foam frisbees, foam basketballs and various other items. We are so grateful to all the parents who contributed to our fundraisers and a huge word of thanks to our amazing CSPC committee who works tirelessly to make these opportunities happen. From the staff and students of St. Maurice, we thank you wholeheartedly for a great start to the 2017-2018 school year!

Anti-Bullying Presentation

On September 27 the staff and students attended an exciting and interactive anti-bullying presentation which reinforced the messages of cooperation, tolerance and inclusion. Though the presentation students learned that creating a bully free envi-ronment is a team effort.

TCDSB Celebrates the Year of the School in 2017-2018

TCDSB Digital Store

As our students continue to learn and adapt to the rapid advances in technology, the Toronto Catholic District School Board is committed to providing to all of our students and their families, equal access to the latest technology. We recognize the importance of promoting the 21st Century Competencies by supporting digital literacy, creativity, innovation, collaboration, and the overall needs and aspirations of all students. To that end, the TCDSB continues to be on the leading edge of providing technical upgrades and assistance by providing you with a very special opportunity: the TCDSB Digital Store. Visit our website for more information: https://www.tcdsb.org/FORSTUDENTS/DigitalStore/Pages/default.aspx

TCDSB Adopts Parent Charter of Principles and Student Charter of Principles

In support of its vision of transforming the world through innovation, the Toronto Catholic District School Board is the first school board to formally adopt guiding sets of principles outlining parent and student rights. The TCDSB is taking the lead in establishing principles de-signed to address the basic rights elements of a sound Catholic education to which parents and students are entitled during a period when individual rights is a major topic of discussion in other sectors such as the airline travel industry.

The Student Charter of Principles starts: “A student is entitled to reasonably participate in decisions that affect his/her education and school life. The Board will pursue equity and inclusion for all students of the Board. A student is entitled to a spiritually, socially, emotionally and physically safe, and positive, school environment, where he/she is respected and treated in a manner consistent with our Catholic values and teachings.”

The Parent Charter of Principles begins with: “The Board will provide a faith-based publicly funded school with education grounded in Catho-lic doctrine, traditions and teachings for your child. A parent or guardian will have opportunities for involvement in his/her child’s education. A parent or guardian is entitled to a reasonable expectation that his/her child is learning in a safe, healthy, caring and accessible school, free of discrimination, prejudice, bullying and harassment.”

Both documents can be found on the TCDSB website at https://www.tcdsb.org/FORPARENTS/CharterofPrinciples/Pages/default.aspx

TCDSB Continues to Focus on Improving Results

The Toronto Catholic District School Board continues to report improvements over time. Literacy results are high, with improvements evident over the past five years. Mathematics results are less impressive and mirror province-wide results in that area.

Reading and writing results are strong in both Grade 3 and Grade 6, either approaching or exceeding 80% at or above the Provincial Stand-ard. In Primary and Junior, mathematics results remain low both in the Board and Province. At the secondary level, Grade 9 applied math-ematics scores have shown improvement but continue to be low. In both Grade 9 academic mathematics and OSSLT, the Board mirrors the Province and maintains strong results with 80% or more meeting high standards. The EQAO results continue to point to mathematics and the applied level as an area of focus.

CSPC Workshop

All Catholic School Parent Council members are invited and encouraged to attend the fall workshop to be held October 23rd, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Catholic Education Centre. This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about the roles and responsibilities of CSP Cs, network with your colleagues from other schools and share best practices. Dinner will be provided.
