From 1830 to 1880 the community of Lowell Mills thrived here along Driftwood River. There were two grist mills, a cooperage, a shoemaker's shop, a distillery, a saw mill, a woolen mill, an inn and general store. When the mills closed, the town was abandoned.

• Mid­Atlantic + New England states developed new roads + canals (ex. National Road and Erie Canal)• In the North: commerce encouraged with increased trade and commercial activity• Canal boats and steam boats carried the most freight as railroads still had great difficulties• Supreme Court: 1. Dartmouth v Woodward (1819): no state interference in federal contracts2. Gibbons v Ogden (1824): no monopoly (issued by NY State) for Fulton’s steamboat, promoted competition and gave control to Federal gov’t.3. Charles R. Bridge v Warren Bridge (1833): again ruled against a state enforced monopoly• Southern states developed far fewer roads and canals because the plantation owners sold materials (cotton, tobacco) to northern and European ports without processing. Slave owners preferred to spend tax money on other things that benefited their class

Increased commercial farming especially in the new western lands as the these farms moved away from subsistence farming3.
