REV. RYOKEI ARIMOTO WILL BE BACK IN LOS ANGELES.Rev. Arimoto attracted the audience greatly with his nine (9) hours of sermons during the Goju Soden retreat. Many people expressed their wish to attend his sermons again in the future.
Fortunately, we will welcome Rev. Arimoto again in Los Angeles to present a special sermon in the morning of Sunday, June 26th. This special sermon will be presented as the summarization of Goju Soden (Goju sarai), which is traditionally provided for the Goju participants to review what they learned during the retreat. We wish to ask for the Goju Soden participants to recommend and encourage your family and friends to attend this sermon. Especially, we wish to encourage those who didn’t have a chance to be a part of Goju Soden to not miss this half-day special sermon of learning Buddhism. English translation will be provided. The details of the event will follow. Also, we are compiling Rev. Arimoto’s sermons during the Goju Soden retreat into a set

Jodo Shu Special Buddhist Practice: Goju Soden, December 10 (Fri) – 12 (Sun), 2010
Special Buddhist Practice“ G o j u S o d e n ” R e t r e a tAfter all many days of preparation extending around two years, we finally saw the arrival of December 10th, the first day of the three day special Buddhist practice: Goju Soden. It was a date filled with the extreme anticipation, concern, and expectations. The retreat started with the participants assembling before 9:00 a.m., when the reception was scheduled. The 50 participants included individuals from Alabama, Arizona and Washington State. All these participants completed the retreat and a special prayer was extended for about 150 individuals.

Also, about 100 people attended the sermons that were arranged to be open to the public for three days. This retreat achieved a great success far more than we expected, thanks to the sincerity and support of Rev. Ryokei Arimoto (Preacher), Rev. Gyokei Honda (Prayer), Rev. Gyoken Honda (Instructor) and all attending priests from Japan (see P.3). Also, it cannot be forgotten that we received a lot of support in preparation for acquiring necessary equipments for this retreat from many other Jodo Shu priests in Japan. We hope that those three days become an unforgettable memory in your lifetime. It truly became a precious occasion for us to introduce the teaching of Nembutsu and the existence of this

temple to our community by means of this traditional religious retreat of Jodo Shu. In addition, out of the friendship with the former LA ministers (Rev. Kodo Tanaka, Rev. Yutetsu Hara, Rev. Koshi Ikawa, Rev. Chiki Mikami and Rev. Zenjo Kato), some people once again embraced the relationship with Amida Buddha enshrined in our temple. These delightful results of this retreat will surely serve as a major drive for us to strive toward commemorating the 800th Memorial Anniversary of Honen Shonin this coming June. We would like to ask for your further support for us to host this significant event as reward to Honen Shonin. Namu Amida Butsu

Autumn Higan Service was observed on September 26, 2010, combined with a memorial service of the Right Reverend Shun’ei Tsuboi, the former Chief Abbot of Jodo Shu, who passed away on September 6th. The congregation offered incense with the recitation of “Namu Amida Butsu” in reverence for the Abbot’s lifetime commitment to the propagation of Nembutsu. Also, three memorial tablets were offered to extend a special prayer for early deceased children.
Special to this service, we welcomed Rev. Shunjo Takahashi from Chicago Jodo Shu Temple as the Higan service speaker. Rev. Takahashi delivered his sermon in English and shared the idea of harmonious co-existence from the Buddhist point of view. After observing the service with us, Rev. Takahashi also shared his thoughts with the congregation at the luncheon. Everyone enjoyed a lunch box served by Fujinkai and we all had a pleasant day in autumn.

Juya Service/”Honen snd Shinran”Juya Service was observed on November 6th combined with the symbolic ritual of cremation of old religious items such as o-mamori (charm). The congregation was engaged in Nembutsu chanting with mokugyo (wooden drum) in preparation for Goju Soden retreat, which was drawing near.
The matinee of “Honen and Shinran” by Zenshinza was scheduled in that afternoon and 25 tickets that our temple reserved were sold out by our congregation. We went to JACCC to watch its final show in Los Angeles. We suppose that it appealed greatly to the audience each time the massive voice of Nembutsu chanting echoed in the hall. It was a fine performance by the Zenshinza and enjoyed by all.
2 0 1 0 Y e a r - e n d C l e a n U pAlmost 30 volunteers participated in the year-end clean up on Saturday, December 4th. After attending a short service, the volunteers started cleaning up the main hall, kitchen, conference room, 1F hall, restrooms and hallways to express gratitude to Amida Buddha, enshrined in our temple. “Toshi-koshi soba (traditional New Year’s Eve noodle)” and BBQ was served by Fujinkai in appreciation for their labor.

Year-end & New Year’s Day SvcOn December 31st from 4 pm, five individuals attended the “Year-end One-hour Nembutsu Service” and chanted “Namu Amida Butsu” for an hour. Shusho-e followed the next day from 10 am. About 100 people from our community visited the temple during the New Year’s Day. Memorial Svc for Honen ShoninJodo Shu Los Angeles SeminarGyoki Service was held on Sunday, January 23, 2011. Combined with the service, a special prayer was offered to pay tribute to ministers who devoted their lives to the propagation of Nembutsu in the United States.
Following the service, two ministers, who were participating in the 10th annual Jodo Shu LA Seminar, delivered their sermons in English. They stayed ten days in Los Angeles and worked hard to finalize their sermon drafts during this seminar program. Both ministers made a good presentation of their own experiences in their religious activities in Japan to our congregation. New Year’s Party followed and the two ministers exchanged greetings with our congregation. Fujinkai served the traditional New Year cuisine and a cake was offered by Mrs. Tomita.
