KEY CONCEPT Cells divide during mitosis and cytokinesis.

Page 3: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

• Cells must receive a full set of DNA (no more, no less) to work properly

Page 4: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

• DNA- double stranded molecule made of four different subunits of nucleotides (A,T,C,G)

• Chromosome- one long continuous thread of DNA– Each body cell has 46

chromosomes in 23 pairs

Page 5: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

Chromosomes condense at the start of mitosis.

• DNA wraps around proteins (histones) that condense it.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

• One half of a duplicated chromosome is a chromatid.

• Sister chromatids are held together at the centromere.

• Telomeres protect DNA and do not include genes.

• Interphase prepares the cell to divide (G1, S, G2)– During interphase, the DNA is duplicated.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

• Mitosis divides a Somatic (body) cell’s nucleus in four phases.

– Prophase: chromosomes condense and spindle fibers form.

Page 12: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

– Metaphase: chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.

Page 13: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

– Anaphase: sister chromatids separate to opposite sides of the cell.

Page 14: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

– Telophase: the new nuclei form and chromosomes begin to uncoil.

Page 15: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis

• Cytokinesis differs in animal and plant cells.

– In animal cells, the membrane pinches closed.

– In plant cells, a cell plate forms.

Tip to Remember

• Mitosis = Mi “TOE” sis– A toe is part of your body

– MITOSIS only occurs in your Somatic or BODY cells- Every cell EXCEPT sperm and eggs

5.3 Regulation of the Cell Cycle

Briefly explain why the daughter cells resulting from mitosis are genetically identical to each other and to the original cell.

Page 21: 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 61 Topic: 5.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis Essential Question: 1. Explain why the daughter cells.

5.3 Regulation of the Cell Cycle

During Interphase the original cell is preparing for cell division by duplicating (copying) its DNA.

During mitosis the chromosomes are split, resulting in 2 nuclei with identical DNA.

During cytokinesis the cell fully separates leaving us with two identical daughter cells.
