Discover as time went on how skating started the whole industry of Arenas, Artificial Ice and Refrigeration Systems and now in the 21st Century, how our refrigeration systems are rapidly changing by Technology. Because of smart phones / social media and internet we are becoming closer and more connected to the products that we use on a day to day basis. This connectivity is allowing us to have a deeper understanding of product function to improve and maximize their output. The challenge in adopting this into the ice rink refrigeration system, is that the system is made up of several components from various manufacturers that innovate and communicate through their own proprietary methods. The job of arena operators and facility managers is also rapidly changing. There are increasing demands to lower operating costs and provide greater accuracy in budgeting while meeting the arena “Green” environmental goals and safety targets. Understanding the new smart systems can make our work life easier due to better control, instant information and instant awareness.

2:30 pm - 4:30 pm Banff Upper Hot Springs Experience ($20/person)

Put the Banff Upper Hot Springs at the top of your list of things to do in Banff. Soak in the steamy hot mineral water where travellers have come to ‘take the waters’ for over a hundred years. Banff National Park’s only hot springs pool welcomes you for an authentic heritage experience that is a favourite among visitors. When in Banff do as the locals do - come in the morning for the most relaxing visit. Water Flow 100 % natural mineral water is currently flowing at the Banff Upper Hot Springs. The elevation of Banff Upper Hot Springs, at 1,585 meters (5,200 feet), make it the highest in Canada. Water volumes from the spring are affected by this unique location and local precipitation resulting in seasonal fluctuations. To ensure the best experience for our guests, heated municipal water is used when reduced flows in winter occur.

Risk Management Concerns in Parks and Sport FieldsJohn Armstrong

Risks are inherent in all that we do and as Canada becomes more litigious, managing risk has come to the forefront as we manage our recreation facilities. Unchecked risk can cost us all so it is imperative that we manage risk by learning from previous mistakes and implementing proactive measures to reduce and/or eliminate these unwanted expenses. The ability to reduce the total cost of risk in an organization is key to its overall success. In this session you will begin to think like a risk manager. You will gain confidence using the 6 step Risk Management process and mapping risks that are present in our facilities. This session will focus on risk in all recreation facilities.

10:30 am - 11:45 amLEADERSHIP, SUPERVISORY: The

Intergenerational WorkplaceBrenda Robinson, President, The Robcan Group

“Differences are Not Difficulties” Today's world is different. This can present your organization with a challenge or a chore - the choice is yours. What can we do to encourage intergenerational understanding? Have we joined the "I" generation? Are we isolated, insulated, independent, individualized and sometimes even indifferent? Do we pre-judge and get set in our ways? What about the new generations? What motivates younger people to work with us? Is the new era difficult - or just diverse in ways of thinking and doing? Working together works when we work at it! Diversity builds the strength we need. Understanding differences can lead to enhanced decision making and informed processes. Celebrating differences will bring excitement and energy to the work we do.

10:30 am - 11:45 amPARKS: Basic 2 Cycle Engine Repair

Brad MalutaEvery community has and works with small engine machines. Whether it be a weed eater, lawn mower, snow blower, or any other small engine we always seem to encounter problems when least expected. This session will give us an overview of what to look for when things do go wrong. We will look at some of the fundamentals regarding the differences of the 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines as well as the purpose of the air filter, spark plugs, etc. This session will also address how to troubleshoot common areas that seem to always go wrong.
