Our Holy Tradition tells us that Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anna, had prayed fervently to be blessed with a child, and that if they were so blessed, they would dedicate their child to God. Of course, they were blessed with the birth of Mary, and at the age of three, she was taken to the Temple by her parents to be dedicated to God. She grew up in the Temple, where she was reared “like a dove” and received her nourishment “from the hand of an an- gel”. Although some of the details of this event, which is not biblical in nature, should be taken with a grain of salt, there should be no doubt in the minds of believing Christians that Mary was truly dedicated to God in both body and soul, and most likely spent a lot of her time in the Temple praying to and praising God. Just as Mary was dedicated to God when she was presented in the Temple, each of us was dedicated to God when we were presented in our home church to be baptized, and with that dedication came a responsibility to worship God in our own temples, which are, of course, our Catholic churches. Each of us, hopefully, is a member of one of those churches. Each of us should be praying to and praising God as often as possible in our home parish, so that we can grow in our understanding and love for God, and to especially thank Him for the many blessings we receive from Him. In practice, though, most of us wait until the weekend to renew our dedication to our loving God, and for some of us, our weekends are spent in dedication to St. Soccer Practice, or St. Travel Team, or St. Golf Game, or maybe even St. Mattress. Perhaps it is time for each of us to look at who and what we are dedicated to, and then do what we have to do to rededicate ourselves to the three per- sons who deserve our total dedication always: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. By doing so, we will be showing St. Mary, the Mother of God, that we understand what true dedication really means. O n November the 21st, we commemorate the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple. Our Holy Tradition
tells us that Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anna, had prayed fervently to be blessed with a child, and that if they were so blessed,
they would dedicate their child to God. Of course, they were blessed with the birth of Mary, and at the age of three, she was taken to the Temple by her
parents to be dedicated to God. She grew up in the Temple, where she was reared “like a dove” and received her nourishment “from the hand of an an-
gel”. Although some of the details of this event, which is not biblical in nature, should be taken with a grain of salt, there should be no doubt in the
minds of believing Christians that Mary was truly dedicated to God in both body and soul, and most likely spent a lot of her time in the Temple praying
to and praising God.
Just as Mary was dedicated to God when she was presented in the Temple, each of us was dedicated to God when we were presented in our home
church to be baptized, and with that dedication came a responsibility to worship God in our own temples, which are, of course, our Catholic churches.
Each of us, hopefully, is a member of one of those churches. Each of us should be praying to and praising God as often as possible in our home parish,
so that we can grow in our understanding and love for God, and to especially thank Him for the many blessings we receive from Him. In practice,
though, most of us wait until the weekend to renew our dedication to our loving God, and for some of us, our weekends are spent in dedication to St.
Soccer Practice, or St. Travel Team, or St. Golf Game, or maybe even St. Mattress.
Perhaps it is time for each of us to look at who and what we are dedicated to, and then do what we have to do to rededicate ourselves to the three per-
sons who deserve our total dedication always: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. By doing so, we will be showing St. Mary, the
Mother of God, that we understand what true dedication really means.
