It also provides an opportunity to understand the value of planning and its vital role in tourism development. Students will also learn and understand the key actors in tourism policy and planning; policy instruments, implementation and evaluation; tourism planning processes; institution’s role and NGOs that can involve in this process. Policy and planning tourism at local, regional, and national levels will be discussed. As tourism has been evolved, so does planning; it is imperative to match planning processes with that particular environment and social structure. The course GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING of: 1. Planning approaches and concepts 2. Planning history 3. Institutions in charge of planning process 4. Public and private sectors role 5. Community based planning process On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed their SKILLS by: 6. Skill to involve in designing a strategic tourism plan 7. To participate in designing tourism plan by becoming a team member for this purpose 8. Various cases in policy and planning will be discussed and compared. The issue of sustainability has become an imperative to consider in every planning decision for tourism; therefore, how this can be achieved and who is involved in its implementation are questions that the course will address.GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMESOn successful completion of this course, all students will have developed KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING of:

In the meantime, it is a complementary course to any planning and development oriented courses as well as courses emphasizing on the environmental quality.

LEARNING / TEACHING METHODBesides the regular lecture process, various external articles will be presented to the students to read and reflect upon. Visual presentations of various cases will be furnished from different parts of the world and ecosystems.

New development and innovations regarding the sustainability issues and impacts will be part of the learning process. The cases of island states will be emphasized. Students will be given a task of reporting from cases with associated with resource depletion. Constant feedback will be provided on how and in what ways students can relate.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENTStudents have to undertake the following forms of assessment: Reflections: 10% Weekly assignment: 10% Final Examination: 30% Major Project: 30% Field Trip: 10% Class participation: 10%

ATTENDANCEAttendance is compulsory and if absenteeism exceeds by more than 20% of the total lecture hours, students will jeopardize their grades. Students with no attendance, no interest and no data will be graded NG.
