Dear Beloved Parishioners, This week, the readings continue with an important theme in the Gospel of Luke: prayer. It’s apropos to quote the entire First Reading in the book of Sirach:
The LORD is a God of justice, who knows no favorites. Though not unduly partial toward the weak, yet he hears the cry of the oppressed. The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint. The one who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches the heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds, judges justly and affirms the right, and the Lord will not delay. God always listens to our prayer, but often God doesn’t re-spond in the ways we expect. Thus, pray always and trust in God’s wisdom and goodness, regardless whether we receive what we ask for. There is another crucial revelation in our prayers. What we express in our prayers reveal what is hidden in our hearts. In other words, prayers disclose our real character. In the para-ble, the Pharisee has done a lot of good things, but his charac-ter flaw is pride. He thinks he has earned a lot of credits with God, and he looks down on others. He doesn’t know himself much. On the contrary, the tax collector realizes he has sinned a lot and deserved nothing but mercy. He knows him-self as a sinner and all he asks for is God’s tender mercy. Jesus assures us which of the two is justified in the eyes of God. It’s an opportunity for growth and maturity as sons and daughters of God that we scrutinize our own prayers. What have I often asked God for in my prayers? If most of what I pray to God for has to do with material things like money, job, success, health, fame, etc., then I treasure less my rela-tionship with God, but more what I get from God. I’m in fact selfish. If I only pray for those whom I love and care about, I act no differently from Hitler, Stalin, or bin Laden.
To pray is to grow in love for God, and consequently in love for our sisters and brothers. To pray is to let our heart be stretched out beyond its normal level, in order to embrace what we consider hard or even painful. In physical exercises, for muscle growth, the slogan is, “. No pain, no gain.” Our muscles can grow only when they are stretched or pulled beyond its natural extension. So is our heart. To grow in love, our heart must be pulled and extended beyond its natural tendency A genuine love is selfless, i.e., focused more on the beloved than the self. Just observe a mother caring for her baby. The more she loves the baby, the less she worries about herself. No matter how sleepless her night could be, she continues to wake up when her baby cries. Her eyes may be closed, her body sleeping, but her heart is always awake, just in case the baby may be needing her. Therefore, to grow in genuine love for God and neighbors, we must be willing to endure heartache. We must learn how to pray for those who hurt us, especially our family members, relatives, and friends. Don’t stop praying for a spouse who has cheated. Continue to pray for our children who have been disobedient and ungrateful. Pray hard for those loved ones who have abandoned faith, God, or community. Sometimes, just in thinking of them, pang hits our heart. Just offer that pain to God as part of our prayer for them. When Jesus agonizes in the olive garden, and especially writhes on the cross, it is also the moment that his heart is stretched to infinity. In the human eyes, it is the moment of pain and death, but in God’s salvific plan, it is the culmination of salvation and the beginning of life eternal. Pray always, when happy or sad, when perfectly at peace or deeply in pain. Pray always, for those who love us and for those who hate us, for those whom we like and whom we dis-like. Pray always, like Jesus prays. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Duc Vu, SJ

Children’s Offertory Envelope Program
We are introducing a Children’s Offertory Envelope Program for all students in our Catechetical Programs. The purpose of the program is to teach the children the joy of giving and the fact that they need to give back to God out of gratitude for all that God has given them. We believe that this opportunity to participate in the Offertory will be a positive experience for our children, which will mold them into stronger and more giving Catholic adults. We want to be very clear that the purpose of this program IS NOT to raise more money for the parish. Because our parish is so large, we did not feel it would be good stewardship to provide envelopes to children who are
not enrolled in the Catechetical Programs of our parish. Also, we wanted to be certain that you, as parents, were in agreement with the idea of your children using an Offertory envelope. If both the child and parent would like to sign up for the Children’s envelope program, please contact the parish office and provide your information. Each week, during the Offertory, children will be invited to come to the front to place their Offertory envelope in the collection basket. We will be reporting the results of the Children’s Offertory Envelope Program periodically in the bulletin. We ask you to support the effort by first and foremost bringing your children to Mass every weekend. Remind them to bring their envelopes with them and talk with them through the week regarding their thoughts and feelings about giving.

Seventy years are given to us! Some may even reach eighty. But even the best of these years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we are gone. Teach us to make the most of our time so that we may grow in wisdom. Prayer of Moses Psalm 90: 10, 12 (New Living Translation)

Dear Parishioners, We all know the parish is both a spiritual home and a physical facility in which we worship God and serve one another. Like any home, the parish office and the church building need regular maintenance and sometimes expensive repairs. The office and the church were built in 1961 and thus almost 60 years old. Now the roof of the office needs extensive repair or replacement. An estimate of the roof replacement for the office comes at more than $130,000. To defray this significant cost, we are going to have a Car Raffle Ticket sale which started on October 13. All proceeds from this fundraising event will be used for the maintenance of our buildings. Again, we rely on your generous support. And who knows, a blessing in the form of a Tesla car may be waiting for you. Thanks in advance for your selfless support of our parish. Fr. Duc Vu, SJ

Ignatian Spirituality Center
Presents: Praying with St.
Ignatius
Date: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 - 7pm – 9pm. Place: MHT Community Center 2040 Nassau Dr., San Jose 95122 Facilitator: Fr. Andrew B. García S.J. The Holy Bible plays a central role in the meditations proposed by St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises. Indeed, Sacred Scripture provides a concrete point of departure for getting to know the Lord more deeply. The aim of this workshop is to help the faithful become more comfortable and engaged in praying with the Bible through the use of the techniques proposed by the Spiritual Exercises with the end goal of having a more personal and intimate relationship with the Lord. Bring your Bible and the book of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. For more information, please email to [email protected] or call Margarita Hua 408-729-0101
CAR RAFFLE
Padre Duc Vu, SJ

Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of San Jose Gate of Heaven Cemetery,Los Altos 650-428-3730 Calvary Cemetery, San Jose 408-258-2940 St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Milpitas Pre-Need Arrangements at time of death, contact: Teresa Huyen Nguyen [email protected] or 408-296-9895.

(GE 74)
