TOWING

9-1. TOWING

The ground handling wheels (3, Figure 9-1) are usedto tow the helicopter. The ground handling wheels areattached to the eyebolts (4) on the landing gear. Theeyebolts are part of the landing gear. They areinstalled on the skid tubes (5), forward of the aft crosstube. The tow fittings (2) are installed on the landinggear skid tubes (5), in front of the forward cross tube.A universal tow bar (1) can be attached to these towfittings.

NOTE

Remove all ground handling equipmentbefore flight.

SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED

DO NOT TOW THE HELICOPTER IF THEGROSS WEIGHT IS MORE THAN 5000LBS (2270 KG) FOR MEDIUM MODELGROUND HANDLING WHEELS (REF:214-706-104-105) OR 4450 LBS (2020 KG)FOR MODEL 206 GROUND HANDLINGWHEELS.

DO NOT TOW THE HELICOPTER ON ANUNEVEN SURFACE OR ACROSS THEHANGAR DOOR TRACKS WITH TOOMUCH SPEED. TH IS CAN CAUSEPERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE AFTCROSS TUBE.

IF YOU MOVE THE HELICOPTER BYHAND, DO NOT PUSH ON ANY PART OFTHE AIRFRAME. THIS CAN CAUSEDAMAGE TO THE HELICOPTER.

1. Tie down the main rotor blades (Chapter 10).

2. Attach the universal tow bar T101808-101 (1,Figure 9-1) to the landing-gear tow fittings (2).

3. Attach the universal tow bar T101808-101 (1) tothe tractor.

4. Attach the ground handling wheels (3) to theeyebolts (4) on the landing gear skid tubes (5).

DO NOT PUSH ON THE TAIL ROTOR TOMOVE OR LEVEL THE HELICOPTER.THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TAILROTOR.

5. Put a person at the tail skid to keep the helicopterin a level position when you lift the helicopter.

NOTE

To keep the helicopter level as you lift it,operate the two ground handling wheels atthe same time.

6. Close the hydraulic valve on the ground handlingwheels (3).

7. Extend the ground handling wheels (3) to lift thehelicopter off the ground.

8. Disconnect the ground wire from the helicopter(Chapter 12).

MAKE SURE A PERSON ALWAYS STAYSWITH THE HELICOPTER WHEN THEGROUND HANDLING WHEELS ARE INTHE EXTENDED POSITION. THIS CANPREVENT UNWANTED HELICOPTERMOVEMENT AND DAMAGE TO THEHELICOPTER.

9. Make sure that the departure area is clear of auxiliary support equipment.

MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A PERSON AT THE TIP OF EACH ROTOR BLADE AS A LOOKOUT WHEN YOU MOVE THE HELICOPTER IN A HANGAR OR NEAR OTHER AIRCRAFT. THIS CAN PREVENT ANY CONTACT OR DAMAGE TO THE ROTOR BLADES.

10. Put a person at the tip of each rotor blade as alookout.

11. Slowly tow or push the helicopter to the specifiedarea.

12. Attach the ground wire to the helicopter (Chapter12).

KEEP YOUR FEET CLEAR OF THELANDING-GEAR SKID TUBES WHENYOU LOWER THE HEL ICOPTER.FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT ININJURY TO PERSONNEL.

13. Slowly retract the ground handling wheels (3) andlower the helicopter.

14. Remove the universal tow bar (1) from eye bolts(4) of the landing gear tow fittings (2).

15. Remove the ground handling wheels (3) from theeye bolts (4) on the landing gear skid tubes (5).

16. Before flight, remove the covers and the tiedowns(Chapter 10).
