Commander’s ColumnThe leadership of our Post has changed hands, but our purpose and focus is

stronger than ever. I am truly honored to have been chosen by our members to continue the advances John Cruz has made in the past year. John has done an admirable job of leading us through some very difficult times to maintain the viability of our Post. We are also thankful for his proficiencies in maintaining our physical facilities and look forward to his continued support for this, plus his Honor Guard leadership.

With the passing of the gavel comes the realization one single person cannot achieve our goals alone, as John mentioned in last month’s Commander’s Column That especially includes me and I am not bashful about asking for help, as well as asking if someone needs help. We are successful at helping other veterans in need because of support from all of us. One prime example is the effort Rich Jones has performed as Service Officer and the supporting attendance by our members in hosting events to lift the spirits of our disabled veterans. If you haven’t done so already, I urge you to participate in at least one of these events to see the difference we make.

One of our largest attended events of the year will take place shortly after you receive this newsletter, that of our annual Legion Family Picnic. What a great time to meet and get to know fellow Post 80 members and their families. The potluck salads, sides and desserts have always been fabulous! And if you look behind the scenes you’ll see the volunteer members who make this a successful event. We can’t thank them enough.

Another popular event is Family Bingo. We look to have another event on Saturday, October 3rd. Look for the ad in this fun event for the family in this newsletter.

I look forward to seeing more members at Coffee, Donuts & Conversation on Saturday mornings around 9:00am. This is a really good opportunity to learn more about what’s happening at the Post, find answers to problems (from our many experts) and have fun.

Half price Bingo will be on the last Tuesday of September, which should be heavily attended especially if the progressive raffle prizes continue to grow. Come help us make this a success, as this is one of our main sources of revenue, if you have a couple of hours. The work is both fun and easy.

Lastly for this month’s Newsletter, I am open for ideas for activities to increase our members’ participation and events to increase our revenues to provide additional support of our disabled veterans and the development of our youth. Equally important is the recommendation of how we develop and support those ideas.

May you always walk in sunshine,

Ed Ludwig

Commander

Auxiliary News – Sept. 2015Can you believe that the 2015-2016 Auxiliary year is

already begun? School is back in session and so is our Auxiliary program year. I am looking forward to a year where we can continue our wonderful record of service to all vets. Our new Department President, Kathy Cisna, has chosen her theme for the year. Since she is a fan of cats, this year will be dedicated

to “PurrFect Service To Our Veterans.” Our vets deserve nothing less.

Of note is that Department is increasing the dues paid to them by $6.00 per person effective January 1, 2016. As we all know, costs are increasing and there has not been an increase for several years. Department has been cutting their costs as appropriate, but are at the point where the increase needs to be put into place. I would urge all of our members to submit their dues for the next year prior to December 31st in order to avoid the increase. Each Unit will need to determine what impact that will have for their individual membership dues. Many smaller Units had concerns regarding this and those concerns were voiced during the discussion prior to the vote to accept. The dues increase will be discussed and its implication for Unit 80 will be discussed at the September meeting.

Joey Klingbiel, Karen Greenwald and I attended the Department convention in Springfield last month. I was also able to enroll in the leadership session which was very well attended. The session was focused on the need for recruitment of new members and the retention of existing members. Problems within units were identified and possible solutions were discussed. The Department officers have put together a long range plan on this very topic and more information will be coming out over the next several years.

One of the highlights for me was the joint memorial service held on Saturday morning. Karen, past District Chaplain, participated in this very moving ceremony. It was noted that over 5,000 members of the Illinois Legion, Auxiliary, Riders, and Sons died over the last year. It stressed the importance of growing and maintaining a healthy Auxiliary so that we can continue to provide services to the brave men and women who will need our help in the years to come.

Congratulations to Karen Greenwald who is the incoming 11th District Historian for the next year. Also congrats to Sharon Conaster from Champagne who will be installed on September 3rd as National President. She is a very

POST 80 HISTORY

....continued on p. 11

I was asked by a few new members if 1 could reprint some of the history of Post 80. So here it is;

Early in 1919 an organizational meeting of a group of World War veterans was held in the GAR Hall with Waiter Staats presiding. A further meeting was held on July 7th at the Masonic rooms and the name "ALEXANDER BRADLEY BURNS" was adopted. An application for Post Charter was sent on July 21, 1919.

Bob Carpenter was elected Commander and Post 80 was off and running. Emphasis in the early years was on athletics, With a growing membership and money in the bank, club rooms were secured in the “Dicke Building” for meetings on Wednesday evenings. In 1922 Commander Diener closed the meeting rooms and Post 80 moved back to the Masonic Quarters. In 1923, only two meetings were held. The members were a few years older and most were married and had families to raise.

In 1924, Henry Swift was elected Commander and the Post once again came to life. The Post was already helping GAR on Memorial Day, but Swift noticed that Downers Grove had not had a 4th of July celebration since 1907. A carnival, parade and fireworks were planned and carried out by Post 80.

Page 11: 4000 SARATOGA AVENUE LEGION - AIRE September 2016 · We will be hosting a Veterans Expo on September 10th from 8:30am to 12:30pm, sponsored by Senator Christine Radogno and Representative

In the early 30’s, the Depression began taking its toll on the post. Many members were out of work and the Service Officer was kept busy finding ways to help members in need. In 1933, Commander Hawkins appointed Charley Dyer to head a "YOUTH WEEK". Even in sad times people need a little fun. In the spring of each year until the outbreak of World War II, the children would have a full week dedicated to them. Parades, elections of youth to public offices, soap box derbies and plays were enjoyed by all.

In 1936, Post 80 moved into the Avery Coonley Building off Grove Street and remained there for 3 years. In 1939, the post moved to the Heartt Building while preparing their new home at 1035 Burlington Ave. From 1940 until 1961 this would be Post 80’s home. Also in 1939, Troop 80 B S A was chartered,

World War II had begun in Europe and the threat of the United States getting involved became real. Many new programs were started to aid the war effort. From manning the draft board, providing aid to families and running blood drives, Post 80 would assist the war effort in any way it could.

The end of World War II saw a large influx of new members. By 1946, Post 80 enjoyed a membership of more than 450. The American Legion had drawn up The G.I. Bill of Rights and spent many hours assisting veterans upon their discharge from active duty.

In 1949, with the help of Auxiliary Unit 80, the Post purchased 49 acres of land on Ogden Avenue west of Main St. Later that year 7 acres of this land were given to Downers Grove School District for an athletic field. In 1957, another 5 acres were deeded to the district. In 1954, Post 80 sold 300 feet of frontage on Ogden to Robert Hall and Kenny Shoes.

In 1960, ground was broken for our current Legion home which was completed in 1961. Three months after our new home was completed, the Post sold the north east comer of Ogden & Saratoga to Jewel. This sale paid off the mortgage and put money in the bank.

Thanks to past commander, Earl Will and Bill Harkness for keeping records in the past.

-- Past Commander Dave Wisbrock

BEE FactualThere are three kinds of bees in a hive – the queen, workers

and drones. The queen is the only one that lays eggs and can lay nearly 1,500 of them in one day during her four-year life cycle. Why so many? It’s due to the life cycle of the worker bee.

Drones are all males. They fly out and try to find a virgin queen bee during the late mornings and early afternoons, whenever

it is suitable flying weather. They will either mate with a queen and immediately die, or remain a member of the colony until removed by worker bees during times of shortage or at the approach of winter, causing the life cycle of a drone to be less than a year. Drones do not have stingers.

Worker bees are all female and have a life span that varies from three to four weeks during the busy summer months to up to four months over the winter period. Their main work is cleaning the hive, feeding baby bees and building wax cells. They also gather and pack pollen, nectar and honey into cells. Little or no work is done during the winter months, surviving on honey stored during the summer. This is why the beekeepers must be careful to leave enough honey for the hive to survive when they harvesting honey in the fall.

The actual hive consists of a box without a top or bottom that is filled with 8 to 10 frames that the bees build wax cells on. When the cells are full of honey, the bees cap them off with wax and when the cells are full, the beekeepers remove them to extract the honey. Dick Rooney is shown holding a filled frame that contains about 3 pounds of honey once it’s processed.

The wax caps are removed with a heated knife (the wax is saved and processed to make candles) and then the honey is extracted in a centrifuge. John Super is shown

operating the centrifuge after Dick removes the caps.

This honey will be available for sale for $12 per 1# jar; Dick Rooney has been reserving orders on Bingo nights for when we are ready to fill the jars. After the reserved orders are filled, availability is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The net proceeds are used to

award Environmental Conservation scholarships to deserving senior high school students.

With luck, the next harvest will be in the Spring.

Local Nonprofit, SCARCE, is Helping Residents Lower Energy Costs and Make Home Improvements

At the August 5th Post business meeting, Carrie Horak, of the non-profit SCARCE, presented on opportunities for homeowners to save money on their energy bills. Read on for more information about SCARCE’s work to help DuPage County homeowners become more efficient and reduce costs.

With the average Illinois household spending over $2000 annually on natural gas and electricity, there are many opportunities to save. To uncover these savings, a local non-profit, SCARCE, is helping homeowners make smarter choices about energy.

You may have noticed ComEd is installing new Smart Meters in the area. This new technology is creating more options for electricity rates for local residents. For example, ComEd offers a Residential Real-Time Pricing program, which takes advantage of smart meters to provide hourly pricing and has saved customers an average of over $100 each year since 2008, collectively saving $13 million. By paying the “wholesale” rate for electricity that changes every hour rather than a fixed price, participants take advantage of low-priced electricity during most of the fall, winter and spring. During the summer, participants can save by shifting energy use during summer weekday afternoons to the evenings or early mornings. Alternative supplier MC Squared also offers a rate with set prices for different times of day that may allow you to save money over the standard utility price. Local SCARCE energy advisors have more information on these and other options.

Even bigger savings have been achieved by over 4000 customers who used the Energy Impact Illinois (EI2) program to make home energy improvements. These improvements cut their energy bills by an average of $400 per year. Homeowners that participate begin with

an energy assessment. The discounted price is just $99, or free if the homeowner hosts five or more neighbors for the energy assessment. Certified and vetted contractors use the assessment to find affordable improvements that maximize savings. SCARCE ensures the work gets done right and that homeowners learn about rebates to reduce the cost.

In addition to reducing energy bills, energy improvements can make homes more comfortable and valuable. Most homes (even newer ones) are too cold in the winter and too warm in the summer, which most families simply assume is normal. But with basic improvements every home can be much more comfortable year-round – and it’s hard to put a price on that. In addition, homes that make improvements which increase their efficiency by 15% or more are eligible for an Illinois Home Performance with Energy Star certificate. This shows that the home is energy efficient when it is listed for sale, and research has proven that these homes sell faster and for higher prices.

To speak with someone and learn about their options, homeowners can contact their local SCARCE energy advisor Carrie Horak, at (630) 545-9710 or [email protected], or by calling 844-922-1222.

During an energy assessment, a Building Performance Institute-certified professional will use tools like infrared imaging (shown above) to figue out exactly where your home is losing energy and how you can fix these costly issues.

A Building Performance Institute Certified contractor explains how energy loss occurs in a home at an energy house party.

We were born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses & the "Pill".

We were here before radar, credit cards, laser beams, pantyhose, air-conditioners, drip-dried clothes, and a man walking on the moon....

We thought "fast food" was what you ate during Lent and "Made in Japan" meant junk....

When we hit the scene there were five & dime stores where you could buy things for 5¢ and 10¢, pizzas, McDonalds, and instant coffee were unheard of...

Cigarette smoking was "fashionable", "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, and "pot" was something you cooked in.

No wonder we're so confused by today's generation gap!

However, we somehow survived, and you can ask any of us if the world is not better for our being here!!!
