Commander’s ColumnFall is rapidly sneaking up on us. If you’re like me you wonder where the

summer has gone. It seems like only yesterday I was putting away the snowthrower and getting the lawnmower ready to go, but the end of Daylight Savings Time on November 1st makes me realize the opposite needs to happen. Be sure to move your clocks back an hour or you’ll be early for church.

Were you at Family Bingo? Both kids and adults had fun and a great time together, plus the Auxiliary had some great snacks available from the kitchen.

And if you missed it, the Legion Riders had an excellent turnout for their Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. The net result was a nice amount to be used to help disadvantaged veterans, especially at Hines. I’m sure they extend their thanks to all that came.

As I mentioned last month, we are hosting a Veteran’s Benefits Seminar on Saturday, November 7th from 9:00 am to Noon, sponsored by Senator Christine Radogno & Representative Jim Durkin. It’ll be set up in the format of a vendor fair so you’ll be able to go from table to table at your own pace. There will be more than 35 vendors/representatives present to provide an excellent opportunity to learn what benefits you may be entitled to and how to obtain them. I urge you to attend.

Veterans’ Day, Wednesday, November 11th, and many of our members attend high schools that have a day of ceremonies recognizing all that have served in the armed forces. This is a great opportunity for young students to learn about some of our fellow veterans’ experiences. Please attend if you have the opportunity. Also, there will be a ceremony in front of the Post at 11:00 am and a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 7:00 pm outdoors with the support of the Boy Scouts.

Don’t miss the deadline for registering your kids, grandchildren and/or great grandchildren to receive a gift from Santa on December 6th. They must be 10 or younger and attend to receive their gift. The form is in this newsletter, and please notice the deadline of November 17th; you don’t want to miss it. Jeff Adams, our Junior Vice Commander, needs to know how many and what type of gifts to purchase.

One question I’m asked about all the time is “How are the bees doing?” Usually I’ve been able to respond that they’re doing fine, though we had some serious setbacks this year. The honey was harvested in July and August, selling out at $12 per 1# jar (less than that at the Farmers’ Market) almost immediately. We were able to purchase a hive from someone going out of the bee business to replace the one lost at the Legion. After watching the production the last few months we were able to do another harvest last month as we prepared the hives for the winter. There’s a very limited amount of honey for sale from this harvest, so contact Dick Rooney if you’re interested in purchasing some. As you know, all the net profits go toward the Environmental Conservation Scholarship Award. In May, Dick Rooney awarded $2,000 to several deserving senior high school students. It looks like we’ll

be able to match that again this coming year by the skin of our teeth and some last minute cooperation from the hives at the Legion, Dick’s house and my back yard.

Also with respect to the bees, we’ve been saving the wax cappings to be able to melt it into candles. It takes 4 times the effort for the bees to make honey instead of wax, so the availability of beeswax is somewhat limited. However, this year we’re able to make beeswax candles available for sale to enhance the scholarship fund. There are a limited number of candles available. Please check the ad in the newsletter and contact Dick Rooney to place your order on a first come-first serve basis.

As we near the end of the month we look forward to Thanksgiving as a time for families to gather and be thankful for all that we have. I sincerely hope everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: “A person is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection.”.

May you always walk in sunshine.Ed Ludwig, Commander.

Auxiliary News – Nov. 2015Year of the Cat

“PurrFect Service to Our Veterans”

What a busy month October has turned out to be. The Auxiliary partnered with the Legion for Family Bingo on the 3rd. We offered our help to the Legion

Riders on the 11th and helped serve at their spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Thanks to everyone who gave up time on the week-ends to come out and support the Legion family and all of the good work that they do.

At our October meeting we met two more girls that Unit 80 sponsored for Illinois Girls State. Brittany Pham and Harsha Koritala from Lisle Senior High School spoke about their experience last summer. The girls we have met are so confident and outgoing. Illinois is fortunate to have such a strong program in place. If anyone knows of a high school age girl who might be interested in the 2016 term, please have them contact Bev Parrott. We would like to sponsor at least 4 girls. It will be a week that they will greatly benefit from.

The Auxiliary, Legion, and members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will continue to pay visits to the vets that are living in retirement homes. Arden Courts residents look forward to the music, snacks, and conversation that the Auxiliary women and the Legion members provide on a regular basis. These daytime events are open to anyone who would like to join the visits. You can contact Therese Schey for more information. All are welcome.

Our standing rules and Constitution are now up to date with the membership/dues changes. Thanks to Norma Border for her help in coordinating the revisions. If you have not received a renewal form for 2016 in the mail, you can either submit your $18.00 check to me or you can renew on line by going to the National Website and renewing there. You will need to enter a credit card number for payment. Remember that any renewal that does not arrive in the National office’s mailbox by late December will be subject to the dues increase and must be paid at $24.00.

As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, it is tempting to stay home in the evening. I hope that you will continue to support

the Auxiliary and attend all meetings. We have several volunteers who are happy to pick you up and take you home. I can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 630-915-7823 if you would like a ride. November’s meeting will be a special one as we are having a guest speaker from the Spice Merchants shop in downtown Downers Grove. She will bring along some teas to sample and also speak about using spices in your daily cooking. With the holidays coming up, you won’t want to miss this meeting. Speaking of the holidays, our December meeting will again be a pot luck and include a grab bag. We will be starting the December meeting at 6:00 so mark your calendars now so you don’t forget the earlier start. Come out for a good meal and join in wishing each other a Merry Christmas.

November 7th, the Legion is sponsoring a Veteran’s Expo and Blood Drive at the post from 8:30 to 12:30. The Auxiliary will be having a table and providing morning coffee and sweets in addition to information on the Auxiliary and membership forms. Please let any vets that you know about the Expo and encourage them to attend.

Our next meeting is November 9th at 7:00. Come out and see what Unit 80 is up to and also to sample a few new holiday tea flavors.

Service Committee UpdateOn September 24th the Service Committee took ten Veterans from DuPage Convalescent Home to lunch at Maxfield's Restaurant in Lombard. Several of them commented on how much fun they had and how much they enjoy the food at Maxfield's. They really enjoy the chance to get out of the home for awhile and have a good meal and some conversation with fellow Veterans. So, thanks to everybody who came along to help. The Veterans and I really appreciate it.

Rich Jones, Service Officer

New Bronze Plaque for 2016We are in the process of collecting names for the new Bronze Memorial Plaque

that will be placed on the Obelisk in front of the Post in 2016. The plaque is for all Veterans that have served our country. The price is the same as in the past, $35.00 per name. A certificate and a picture of the plaque will be sent to the person ordering the placement of the name. If you know a Veteran, (Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, just a friend, or yourself) whose name you would like to see put on the plaque, pick up an application form which is located on the table in the hallway at the Post or call Rich Jones at (630) 964-2434 for more information.

MEMBERSHIP GOAL GETTING CLOSER !!

With 289 members as of 10/18 we’re at 78% of our 371 goal. Even though the membership year is from July 1st, to June 30th, National is raising dues by $5 beginning January 1st, as you may have read in the Legion magazine this past month. This means we will be paying the National $5 more per member after January 1st. To avoid paying this extra amount we need you

to pay your dues ASAP, if you haven’t already.

The state normally sends out 3 separate notices. Once you pay your dues, those notices will stop coming. So, if you’re one of 117 that haven’t paid yet, please mail your check for $40 (payable to American Legion Post 80) to avoid getting more notices and help us avoid paying the extra fee to National this year. Send your dues to:

American Legion Post 80

Attn.: Nicole Dedick, Adjutant

4000 Saratoga Ave.

Downers Grove, IL 60515

Equally important, come join us Saturday mornings at 9:00 am for coffee and donuts, or Tuesdays at Bingo, or at one of our other activities (check the website calendar at www.post80.org).

Special Note: If your membership was not paid in 2014, National has changed your status to EXPIRED; that means any years you may have been a member are now considered NONE. As a further result this will be the last newsletter you will receive. Please reconsider renewing your membership.
