“Love the Lord yourGodwith all your heart andwith all your soul andwithallyourmindandwithallyourstrength.” (Mark12.30)We are commanded to love God. But lay that aside for amoment.WewanttoloveGod!Butwhatdoesthatmean?Isitjustafeelingwehavewhenwesingourfavoritehymnorpraisesong?Istheremoretoitthanthat?HowdoweloveGod?InDeuteronomy,asMosesgavethecommandsofGod,Hispeopleweretold to love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength. Interestingly, whenJesuswasaskedaboutthegreatestcommandment,Hequotedthatpassage, butasHewastranslatingitintothelanguageHewasspeaking,he used four words instead of three—heart, soul, mind, and strength,givingfullerunderstandingtothebreadthoftheHebrewwordsused.WhenIwasayoungChristian,wantingtoknowasmuchaboutGodandHiswordaspossible,Isensedthatthiswasakeyverseforlife.Perhapsthat is obvious in the fact that Jesus calls it the birst and greatestcommandment! But therewasmore to it than that. Iwanted to knowhowtoloveGod—andthisversetoldmetodosowith“heart,soul,mind,andstrength.”Aha!ThesefourwordswouldsurelyteachmetheessenceoflovingGod.Ithoughtofeachword—theywereallveryfamiliar—andhowIinterpretedeachword.AndIrealizedthatthesewordsarenotasconcreteinmeaningasIhadthought.For instance, whatdid itmean to loveGodwithallmyheart?Did thatmean to have an emotional attachment to God—or was there more? What does the word heart really mean? It obviously has a bigurativemeaningbasedonthephysicalheartbeingthecenterofourlivesinthewayitpumpslife-givingbloodtoeveryotherarea.AndwhatdoImakeofthewordsoul?Myinnermostbeing?Ifso,howdoesthatdifferfromheart?Isheartmoreemotionalandsoulmorerational?Andifso—well,Jesus inserted the wordmind. At birst glance, it signibied tome that IshouldloveGodwithmythinking—theponderingofmyheart.Doesthatmeanwithmybrain—ordoesthemindtranscendthebrain?Strength—thatword seemed themost clear tome at birst glance. Itmeant that IshouldloveGodwithmyphysicalbeing.Ordoesstrengthspeaktoinnerfortitude—thepowerofinnerconvictions?I think you can see thatmymeditation actually didn’tmake things asclearasIwanted. Insomeways, mymeditationgaverisetoevenmorequestionsabouthowtoloveGod.IhadsensedthatthekeytolovingGodwasfoundinthissentence, butstudyingthesewordsdidnotbringtheclarity I desired. Then one day it occurred tome that this verse doesindeedgiveme thekey to learninghowbest to loveGod—but thekeywasn’twhatIanticipated.Let’slookatthattomorrow…
