Fairtrade Standards general concepts

Unique for Fairtrade is the focus on developing producers in the 3 dimensions of sustainability:

• Social

• Economic

• Environmental

The development approach is conceptualized in the setting of:

• Minimum / Core Requirements Applicable from start and compliance with every single req.

• Progress Requirements New every 3 years

• Development Requirements Scoring system

• Standards and procedures: open, transparent, participatory and available

• Justification of the standards: clear objectives and guidelines

• Consultation of all interested parties

How do we help producers?

• Elaborate tailor-made standards (Producer / Trader and Product standards)

• Develop clear standards (guidance and use of plain English)

• Translate in 3 main languages, plus cooperate for local translations

• Provide training for multipliers (staff, auditors, liaison officers and members)

• Elaborate explanatory documents and contribute to training documents

• Develop / review standards on request

Main change in 2011:The New Standards Framework (NSF) aimed to:

• Allow producers to choose their own development path

• Better meet producer realities

• Contribute to a better cost benefit ratio for producers

• Simplify usability and readability

• Make Fairtrade’s unique selling points more visible

• Provide a basis for better cooperation with other standard

systems
