The Isle of Sheppey is a small island off the north Kent coast with a fascinating variety of landscapes and places to explore. Sheerness-on-Sea, a busy market town and international port, is located to the north west of the island. To the south is the historic town of Queenborough with its excellent harbour. The villages of Minster, with a stretch of stunning coastline and abbey, and Eastchurch, with a memorial to the aviators who played a part in making the island the birthplace of British aviation, are to the centre of the island. To the east, there is Leysdown-on-Sea and Warden which includes a seaside resort and uninterrupted views along the coast of Kent. The Island also features award-winning beaches at Sheerness, Minster Leas (Blue Flag, 2019) and Leysdown (Seaside Award, 2019) which attracts visitors each year to catch their fill of sun and sea. The Isle of Sheppey is home to two National Nature Reserves of international importance, protecting a variety of flora and fauna. Wildlife enthusiasts at certain times of the year can see a population of marsh harriers, lapwing, redshanks and oyster catchers to name but a few. When visiting the reserves please abide by the Countryside Code and leave no trace of your visit. Dogs are not allowed in Elmley National Nature Reserve except for registered assistance dogs and dogs must be kept on a lead at all time in Swale National Nature Reserve.
