PurposeTo give an overview of how the Foundation is continuing to support professionalism in the sector with a focus on:
Initial teacher education The role of the Society for Education and
Training Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS)
• Our goal is to help teachers and trainers develop and improve their skills to enhance their own professional standing and that of the sector.
• We are guided in this by the Professional Standards.• By promoting dual professionalism and teaching
expertise, we seek to raise the quality and outcomes of further education for learners, and through this increase its impact on employers and the economy.
What do we mean by professionalism?
• To support the standards, we commissioned ‘How to guides’– University of Huddersfield and Wolverhampton guides are both ITE focused
• A stand alone workbook and self assessment pack for practitioners is already available. Similar workbooks for HR / Quality managers and Leaders are forthcoming
• Professionalism symposium and seminar series in early summer 2016.
Growing professionalism and status in the sector
Level 5 teacher training modules – developed to support those teaching GCSE resits in maths and English. Already unitised by Ascentis and being embedded in HEI DETs
Revisit DET Guidance in an ITE working forum – a sector led approach
FE Advice service dealing with 500 queries a month
Developments in Initial Teacher Education
• Professional membership body for teachers, trainers and assessors working in education and training system
• Builds and promotes professionalism and status, ensuring better recognition for expertise and experience
• Opportunities for professional development, sharing and building knowledge and evidence-based practice
• Launched May 2015 following extensive consultation• 12,500 members and rising

Society for Education and Training• Hosted by ETF – share same goal of raising standard
of teaching and training in FE & Skills sector• But SET driven by member requirements for support
to help their professional development• Opportunities to provide expert practitioner input to
new ETF CPD initiatives• Newly established Practitioner Advisory Group for
members to advise future development of benefits• Currently recruiting Management Board to develop
and approve strategy and policies

monthly webinars• Improved quarterly journal InTuition, monthly
InTuition Extra and website learning content• Discounted access to wide range of ETF CPD
courses• Vehicle for practitioner research and academic

Over 16,000 practitioners have gained QTLS since 2008
SET continues to offer QTLS: 3 cycles per year, with next opportunity to register from 1 December to 29 January 2016
1800 applications in 2015 with a 90% success rate

From survey of members who had achieved QTLS in 2013 and 2014:• 80% of respondents considered that the
process has improved their teaching practice• 84% considered the process had increased
their confidence in their teaching practiceStakeholder interviews suggest a need to improve the rigour and to increase parity with QTS

Phase 1: from 1 August 2015• 2014 professional standards explicitly
integrated into the Professional Formation on-line workbook from 1 September 2015.
• Closer alignment of QTLS with DET: Pilot of QTLS with 45 premium graduates who achieved DET in June 2015
• Guidance developed for Headteachers

Phase 2: from October 2015• Technical review of Reflect • Further consultation with SET Fellows,
QTLS reviewers and moderators and stakeholders in October/November to inform on-going developments to improve the quality and standing of QTLS
