Just a word of warning, although we don’t think anyone could fall for this, a group of fraudsters sounding like an Indians or Paki-stanis are asking people to check their per-sonal computers, in particular IP addresses etc. These idiots claim to be from Microsoft and you can hear a whole lot of them in the background chatting away, attempting the swindle elsewhere. They are after your per-sonal information including bank accounts. You have a choice of two things; hang up im-mediately, or as we did, string them along. In our case, when they gave us instructions to deliver our personal information they always ask you “what is coming up on your screen?” At this stage you say “a lady with no clothes on”. This really frustrates them and they can’t understand what’s going on. Keep telling them that and after a while they start scream-ing at you and then hang up themselves! It’s a blast if you’re a bit bored! You need to know that Microsoft or your bank would never phone little old minion you for these types of details. But have some fun anyway.

Fraudsters try to get details

• The construction and sealing of Stringer Rd in Richmond is on track for completion by late May. Approximately just under half of the road from the state highway end is sealed and the footpath completed. The work on the state highway involving widening of the seal, street lighting and guard-rail work is also complete. The last section of the work is presently under construction.

• Submissions closed on the annual plan late last month, with just under 500 members of the community sending in their views to the Tasman District Council. Mayor Richard Kempthorne says this number is about average. “Every submission gives a flavour of what that community member thinks and wants. TDC appreciates receiving submissions.”

After catching up with two girls selling apples to make pocket money this week, we ask locals what they used to do to earn some cash.

Linda Free, Richmond.

“I used to do a paper and pam-phlet run, that would get me around $75 a week.”

Ann Dalton, Richmond.

“I used to pick tomatoes, hops, tobacco and raspberries. We lived in the country so that was the only thing we could do, there was plenty of sea-sonal work.”

Barry Wilson, Richmond.

“This would be going back 50 years, but I had a paper round. I’d make around seven pound a week and spend it going to watch Arsenal.”

Lucas Bartlett, Richmond.

“I do jobs at Aunty Claire’s place. I help shift the cows and get the eggs in. I get $5 which I’m saving for a BMX bike.”

DUCK SEASON: Richmond man Antony Cliffe will be taking his son Tom, 6, out duck shooting for the first time this Saturday. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Season to go off with a bang for first timerThere are two reasons one little local boy can’t wait for this weekend. This Saturday will see Tom Cliffe, 6, and his fa-ther Antony head out for duck season for the first time together. Saturday will also see the Henley School student take to the field for his first game of rippa rugby. Tom says he’s very excited about both occasions.Shooting down on the Rabbit Island estuary out of a maimai has become a bit of a family tradition for the Cliffe’s, with Antony’s father Neil doing it before him. Grandad Neil will be joining the pair for opening morning of duck shooting this Satur-day. Tom has high hopes for his introduction to

the sport. “I’m hoping for 10 ducks,” he says with a grin on his face. Antony is a bit more modest though, saying he’d be lucky to get one or two.The duo have spent the last month building their maimai and last weekend were able to put the roof on it. “It’s been a great thing for us to do to-gether,” says Antony.Murphy, the Cliffe’s 14 year-old Hungarian vizsla dog, will be having his last duck shooting season this year. Antony would like to thank the land-owners and those that give permission for duck shooting on the estuary. Duck season starts this weekend until the end of July.

that had as many women involved as them. The women believe Paul Eggers, controller of the brigade, is pleased about having so many wom-en around “because it’s the only chance he gets to boss females around.”“I think we’ve also hit critical mass at some point, where it’s easier for other women to join because it shows that women can do it,” says Spike. The women strongly believe that there is no dif-ference on the job whether you’re a man or a woman and if there happened to be something they weren’t capable of they’d be able to tell someone.“It’s about working to your strengths, there are some things physically I know I can’t do but there are things I can do that the guys might feel uncomfortable to do, so it’s about working as a team,” says Bella. The brigade would often get a call out where the truck would mostly be women, with the odd man thrown in for good measure. Most of the ladies even think Bella is one of the better drivers because she doesn’t crunch the gears. “She can show the boys a thing or two,” laughs Grace. But Bella says the men and the women are treat-ed equally because everyone is respected.

And Paul says a crew is a crew, it doesn’t matter who you’ve got. “You work together all the time so you get used to everyone working together.”The ladies have had trouble trying to pin down exactly why there are so many of them involved in the Appleby brigade. Newesy recruit Chelsea Fry says it doesn’t feel like there’s more women than men - most of the time. The women, who are all mothers except for Chelsea and Alana, say they probably had their own reasons for getting involved, but the over-riding factor was to do something beneficial.Learning new skills is also a positive for the women, they’ve even learnt how to use tools.Being able to do something physical and being outside their comfort zone also appeals to the women. The ladies say it would be great if other mem-bers of the fairer sex decided to join their local brigade. “It’s not as frightening as you think it’s going to be, you’re always put in a position of safety first,” says Robyn Jackman. The Appleby brigade could also do with a few more members, especially those who have a bit of free time during the day.The ladies would like to thank their partners, who are all very supportive of what they do.

Mapua Waterfront Precinct

An open forum to discuss the Mapua Waterfront Precinct will be held at the Mapua Boat Club on Wednesday 25 May 2011 from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

As the Community is aware the Mapua Wharf area is important to the District and there have been a number of concerns and issues relating to these spaces and other adjacent sites. The Waterfront Park will provide a fantastic facility to the region and there is a need to ensure the adjacent areas provide an equally pleasant experience. Some work has already been done in 2008 and the team wants to hear of any other ideas as we start to plan the integration of the different spaces with the Waterfront Park.

To do this we need your ideas, thoughts, con-cerns and input into this process. An open day is planned for 25 May 2011. Please come and gives us your constructive and positive views to improv-ing this space.

This meeting provides an opportunity for the com-munity to look at the plans and discuss issues and ideas on a one-to-one basis with the advisory group and Tasman District councillors. For more information Selwyn Steedman, Trans-portation Network Engineer, Phone 03 543 7213.

CREATING AWARENESS: Richmond’s Bob Griffith and Jen Trow prepare for this weekend’s Summit Rescue Helicopter ride. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

As part of May awareness month for the Summit Rescue Helicop-ter, a motorcycle ride will be held this Saturday to raise funds for the vital community service. Bik-ers are encouraged to meet at the Cambridge St car park in Rich-mond at 10.30am, with the ride departing at 11am with the police leading the way. This is the fourth annual heli run organised by Roadsafe Nelson’s Jen Trow. Over the past three years $15,000 has been raised for the helicopter trust. Jen says she wants as many mo-

torcyclists as possible this Satur-day. “We don’t care what you drive; we’ll only be doing 50 kilometres an hour the whole way so scoot-ers are more than welcome too.”The ride will end at Verdict in Nelson city where a BBQ and charity auction will be held. Cost is $10 per person with every cent going to the helicopter and tickets can be pre-purchased at the Sta-bles in Richmond and the Verdict in Nelson. For more information phone Jen on 027-2015-064.

Festival gains momentumRichmond is set to play host to a three-day cel-ebration of cultural diversity, entertainment and celebrations as the 'Richmond Festival' welcomes the USA rugby team as well as rugby fans from far and wide. This September a festival will be held, around the time of the Rugby World Cup games held in Nelson, to celebrate what makes our region spe-cial. It will also give locals the chance to sample American culture.Organisers have made contact with the US em-bassy and the USA team are keen to be involved as much as possible. The Waimea Weekly has already started to let people know what will be happening as part of the Richmond Festival later this year and things will certainly start to heat up over the coming months. The Waimea Weekly is also proud to be the exclusive print media choice of the Rich-mond Festival, so do keep you eyes peeled every week for exciting announcements. BBQ WINNER: Phil Hazeldine from Robbie’s Bar and Bistro presents Paul Williscroft with one of three BBQ’s given away in recent prize draws.

Drag out those dresses ladies; it’s that time of year again.Bride of the Year organiser Heather Harley is on the look out for ladies married between June 1 2009 and June 1 2011. These brides are encouraged to make contact with Heather for an entry form into this year’s competition. As well as getting the chance to wear your wedding dress again, Heather says the event is a great fundraiser for a local organisation. Due to the economic climate last year, Heath-er says it wasn’t feasible to run the event in 2010, which is why brides over two years are more than welcome to enter. The annual event will take place at the Hope Community Church Hall on Ranzau Rd West on June 11. Doors will open at 6.45pm and following this will be a silent auction includ-ing unsold works from a recent Hospice art auction. The show will then start at 7.45pm.

Heather says she is still on the look out for businesses to donate prizes and every bride gets a prize for entering. “It’ll be a lovely even-ing so I welcome any brides to come forward and register so we can raise some money for Hospice, they could do with our help,” says Heather. The evening will also provide a great excuse for people in the area to dress up and have a lovely night out. The evening’s four judges are all from out of town to make the contest fair, including chief judge Robyn Cliffe from Robyn Cliffe Couturiere in Christch-urch. Heather says the event is always a lot of work but being able to raise money for such a worthy cause makes it worthwhile. For more information, including entry forms or to make a donation, contact Heather on 03-545-1644 or [email protected]. Tick-ets to the event will be available from selected pharmacies from late May.

Quiz night to get powerlifter to GreecePowerlifting is one local man’s life.Appleby’s Clayton Marr, 21, is starting to get ex-cited about representing his country and wear-ing the silver fern. The young man has been selected as a member of New Zealand’s Special Olym-pics team who travel to Greece in June. The World Summer Games are being held in Athens, where the Olympic Games originated. Up to 7,500 athletes from 185 coun-tries are expected to compete at the Games with 22 Olympic-type sports being played. Clayton will be leaving for competition on June 14 and will return in early July after a two-night stop in Dubai.Clayton has been involved with powerlifting for a number of years and was initially selected as a reserve, but after a Special Olympics training camp in October he

was asked to attend. But going overseas to compete isn’t cheap. Clay-ton has been working on ways to fundraise and he and fellow Nelson competitor Dean Skinner decided to hold a quiz night.

Sprig & Fern Brightwater have got right behind the idea and have al-ready held one quiz night for the athletes, with another planned for next Wednesday evening. Sprig & Fern have also let Clayton come into the bar a couple of times a week to help out.The young, who is inspired by Ar-nold Schwarzenegger, can bench press 85 kilograms, dead lift 130kg and squat 100kg but he says the bench press is his favourite. Clayton is hoping for a medal at the world

games, but just being there will be amazing. “I’m doing it for my family,” he says.

Several local school children had a great start to Term 2 after being presented with drawing com-petition prizes. This week is National Primary Science Week, which is a new initiative that has been developed by the New Zealand Association of Science Ed-ucators. It provides an opportunity for all New Zealand primary schools to celebrate and engage in science learning. To celebrate Science Week, the Cawthron Trust created a fun drawing competition to find out “What does science mean to me?”. The Tasman Cycle Loop is adding a new fla-vour to its multi-million dollar trail with part of the track making its way through a work-ing vineyard. At last week’s Engineering Services Commit-tee meeting an update was made to council-lors on the Tasman Cycle Trail. This trail, as Waimea Estates general manag-er Ben Bolitho found out a few months ago, would pass through his company’s property on the Appleby Highway. The two entities have since worked together to resolve the main issues, which revolve around health and safety. “Waimea Estates are really happy to have it going through our vineyards,” says Ben.The track will go directly through the work-ing vineyard on the land that was once the railway reserve. Waimea Estates have had a long term lease on this land for the past 30 years or so.Ben believes having a cycle trail go through a vineyard isn’t that common. “It’s the only one I know of, I haven’t been down to the Otago cycle loop but I presume some of that will go through a bit of land, cer-tainly through farms.”Ben says they would like people travelling along the track to not deviate off it. “We’ve taken the option not to fence it to give it better flow into the vineyard but hopefully that’s visual flow rather than people moving through the place.”The vineyard will be putting protocols in place to keep people safe. “As long as people don’t deviate from that track there won’t be

any issues at all, we can work our machinery operations away from that area at peak times.” Work hasn’t yet started on the track through Waimea Estates but Ben says he doesn’t think it will be long until it is completed. “It was meant to be end of June or start of July but nothing has started yet so I’d expect it may be a bit later than that. It’s quite a major project.”Council will maintain the track and the creek beside it and Ben thinks the vineyard will look after the other side of the track. Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne says he understands there could be issues with conflicting uses, because before he be-came mayor he had an orchard in Appleby. “They’ve got spraying, mowing and trimming of vines, they’re all activities which people biking through the vineyard on bikes can have a clash with.”Richard says the council have come up with some signage that will be going up. “We’ll be wanting to make sure that the cycleway doesn’t impinge and hold them [Waimea Estates] back on what they’re doing and we appreciate the fact that they’ve worked well with us and hopefully we are doing the same for them. It’ll be a really nice place to cycle through because it’s a very nice vineyard.”Work on the track through Waimea Estates will now go out for tender, with the path be-ing the main job. This will be a permanent surface of either two-coat chip seal or asphal-tic concrete.Being involved in this project for the commu-nity is a great thing according to Ben. “We’re more than happy to be working with the com-munity and the council to see it through.”

specification.Adam says Milestone Homes has lis-tened to the comments of their cli-ents over the past year and tried to create something a bit different and tick all of the boxes for people look-ing to build a new home. “Our focus over the last three years has been on providing exceptional value homes for people and with this brand new design we are continuing to do that.“Our previous showhome was the most popular house plan in Nelson throughout the period that it was open and we think this home will be even more popular. In fact, we have already sold five of the new showhome plans already. The com-ments from people who have already looked through the home have been excellent, with one couple even choosing the same colour scheme’s for the inside and outside of their new home.”Not only the house plan is new

though, with a brand new, innova-tive specification being used both in-side and outside the home. The ex-terior is 100% maintenance free with a combination of Monier clay bricks and pre-finished weatherboards. When asked what drove this deci-sion Adam says everyone leads busy lives and everyone likes to spend their free time doing things that they enjoy. “When you build a new home you shouldn’t have to worry about re-painting. This also adds value to your investment as you own a main-tenance free property. “The combination of the cladding is also unique and makes quite a fea-ture of the front of the home as we wanted the new showhome to be unique and encourage people to do something a bit different. However if this look isn’t for you we have also created two alternative front facades so you could have the same floor plan but the house would look total-ly different. Two clients have already

taken advantage of this and with the positive feed-back we are starting to introduce this multiple fa-cade option on our new plans.” Milestone Homes have a refreshing approach when it comes to the specification of the show-home, as they ensure that everything you see is standard. This allows people to see exactly what they will be getting and allows them to choose if they would like to change something. “People love the fact that everything they see and touch is what they will be getting in their home” says Adam. Having the standard specification on display also allows Milestone Homes to quantify and price

Business wins national awardLocal sign writing company Power Signs Nelson won two gold’s, a silver and a bronze medal at a recent na-tional award ceremo-ny. The awards, held by the NZ Sign and Dis-play Association, were last month and owners Debbie and Warren Burrows say they were

very excited with the result. “It shows the hard work we put in, it all pays off.” The couple have owned Power Signs for almost 20 years and enter the compe-tition most years. “It’s great to be recognised by your industry like this,” says Debbie.

Tim Shanaher is Nelson's lat-est New Zealand champion. The 15 year-old Garin Col-lege student claimed top honours at the New Zealand Clubs under 19 Junior 8-Ball Championship in Palmerston North late last month, and took home a giant trophy and $200 prize money. And he did it in convincing fashion too, beating Tokoroa's Daniel Wilkinson 4-0 in the grand final. “It hasn't really sunk in yet I was pretty stoked when I got it and I couldn't stop smiling for the first couple of hours,” Tim says on his vic-tory.Tim was one of ten pool play-ers representing the Nelson Suburban Club at the tourna-ment, three of which made it through to the semi-finals.Nathan Geddes, 18, and Tim's older brother, Michael, 17, also made it through to the playoff.Tim was pretty happy to go further than Michael, but they never got to play each

other, being on opposite ends of the competition fixtures. “It's always nice to beat your brother. I try to do better than him every year and I got him this year. He was still re-ally proud of me and he made it to the semis so he should be proud of himself, and I think he was.”

Having two other Nelson team-mates in the semi finals made the gameplay less nerv-ous for Tim, but he admits he was still “shaking in his boots.”Tim completed two 8-ball rounds at the competition, where he sinks every single ball before the opposition

even gets an opportunity to make a shot. Tim will be hoping to be the first person to win the national champi-onship for a second time, at just 15 years-old, he even has the chance to make it a three peat. The 2012 ClubsNZ Jun-ior Nationals will be held at the Nelson Suburban Club.

INDOOR TOURNAMENT: Local men Jon Routhan and Ryan Edwards are looking forward to playing top quality indoor cricket at the Tim Miller Plumbing Nelson Indoor Invitational cricket tournament this Saturday from 3pm and all day Sunday at the Action Indoor Centre in Richmond. Three teams from Nelson will be competing, along with two teams from Christchurch and one from Blenheim. Entry to the public is free. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Waimea College would’ve thought they had it in the bag.Going into half time the squad were up 20-0 on visitors Rangiora on Saturday.Winger Levi McPherson was able to dot over the try line twice in the first 40 minutes with Luca Roden converting both and also passing over two penalties.Manager Patrick McMahon says the team were doing “very well” despite a number of penalties against the side. However, three minutes into the second half saw

two of Waimea’s forwards put into the sin bin. Rangiora took advantage of this, scoring their first try moments later. Their try scoring contin-ued with the final result a loss to Waimea 20-21. Waimea’s man of the match was Levi McPherson. This Saturday the boys travel to Blenheim to take on Marlborough Boys High. “We hope we have learnt from the mistakes of last weekend as Marlborough Boys are always a tough opposite for us having lost to them twice in the last two years by narrow margins,” says Patrick.

Our vision: to create a competitive club with strong family values that encourage the

community to engage with the sport for life.

Brightwater tops Wakefield in football derbyFirst blood goes to the Brightwater Bogans. After playing two seasons under the Nelson Suburbs club, the Bogans – made up of several former rugby players – has transferred to Brightwater for the 2011 season meaning its first game against Wakefield’s 2nd XI was always going to take on a derby atmosphere.Wakefield started each half with a hiss and a roar but its strikers struggled to penetrate the solid Brightwater defence and when Bogans midfielder Marcus Lovell fired in the first goal midway through the first half the Bogans didn’t look like dropping the lead.Wakefield’s best period of play was shortly after half time when it piled pressure on the Brightwater defence and was allowed space with the ball in the 18 yard box. Once the Bogans survived the onslaught though they were not troubled too much more.

Strong performances from Stu Greep and Ryan Hunt-er in the middle helped the Bogans stay on top and when striker Andy Selwood headed in from a corner midway through the second half, Brightwater went into cruise control. The 2-0 win keeps the Bogans – which plays under the Richmond Athletic club – on top of the Nelson Bays Football fourth division with Motueka. Bogans skip-per Hayden Bryant hailed the effort of his players in the match. “I thought we were strong across the park, but our strikers really caused them trouble, we have some talented guys up there. One of our boys, Dan Hawke, let us down a couple of times but other than that the guys were solid.”Wakefield’s 2nd XI will host Motueka this Saturday at the Wakefield Domain.

It has been arguably his greatest year on the track but Brett Nicholl’s trophy cabinet finally received some silverware for 2011. The 48N super-stock driver won the Easter Championship and re-claimed his Winstanley Cup last weekend, mak-ing him a very happy man heading in to the five month offseason. “It was one of the better seasons we’ve had actually,” he says.A rain-affected Easter Champs was won by Brett, who claimed the championship for the first time in his career. Earlier in the season he finished sixth place at the New Zealand Super-Stock Championships in Rotorua and finished second place at the South Island Championships. Brett says putting in the hard yards, late nights working on the car, a reliable pit crew and good sponsors behind him were the difference in his top season. With Brendan Higgins retiring, Brett has made it clear he would like to see 1NZ Dale Ewers re-main in the sport despite rumours of him joining Brendan and calling it a day. “With 1NZ on the

body, he’s going to have to come out and defend it again next year. We need him in for the [Nelson] Tigers, he’s awesome at teams races and he’s a good guy,” says Brett. “It’s good having good cars at home so you know if you’re on the pace or not. With Brendan Higgins retiring, if we lose Dale it will be a bit unfortunate. Hopefully he stays around for another few seasons.”But while he hopes for Dale to stick around, he will again be his number one rival as he looks to take the 1NZ title. “It’s what we’re here for.”He has a “few little things” up his sleeve for next season, but the offseason will be spent fine-tuning the car and making sure he has the consistency to better his top year. Brett wants to say a spe-cial thanks his my mum Sue and dad Phill, part-ner Kirsty, all his pit crew and sponsors; Edridge Contracting, Super Charge Batteries, Burny’s straight and paint, Super Liqour, TNT, Nicholls Auto Centre, Castrol Edge, Sam Taylor Builders Bay Cars and Discover NZ Motorhomes.

Waimea Old Boys 2011www.wobrfc.co.nz

Waimea Old Boys have found their se-cret weapon to kick them to a champion-ship - Andrew Letham. The lethal fullback was at his sharp-shooting best against Accesman Stoke at Greenmeadows on Saturday, collecting 25 points as he booted Stables Waimea Old Boys to a 28-20 victory over the de-fending champions. The win was the second time Waimea Old Boys had defeated Stoke this season and was the second big haul comple-mentary of Andrew.Despite being outscored three to one in the try category, it was the kicking sen-sation, along with first five-eighth Phil Gibson, who sunk the killer blows. Phil nailed a well-timed drop goal midway through the second half and Andrew's penalty count kept the score ticking over throughout the game, enabling Waimea Old Boys to hold off any comeback. Andrew also scored the open-ing try of the match.Stoke was having op-posite affects off the tee with former Tas-man Makos halfback Shaun Begg strug-gling to land conver-sions, even from in front of the sticks.Center James Lowe showed his attacking class throughout the match and got the better of his representative opposites. Two late tries brought Stoke back in to the game but their inability to capitalize from the boot ultimately proved costly, failing to pick up a crucial bonus point as Waimea held on for victory in an en-tertaining second-half contest.Captain Ben Coman says he was happy

to take the win, despite Stoke piling on plenty of pressure. “It was pretty nerve-racking at the end there, so to come away with it after two losses was pretty good,” says Ben. “I'm pretty happy with that.”While he was pleased with his fullback's efforts, the powerful lock played down the win against the champions of the past two years saying they are just taking one game a time. “The most important thing for us was to get back on track after two losses. A win is certainly what we're after. It's nice to

be awarded a penalty and to have that op-tion from 50 meters out. It certainly takes the pressure off.”Waimea will play Ri-waka at home this weekend with kick off at 3pm.The Super Liq-uor Waimea divi-sion 2 Waimea Old Boys team made the trek over the hill to Collingwood this week. After a dis-appointing loss to Marist in their last game, Waimea were keen to start the championship round on a winning note. Golden Bay turned on perfect weather for the match and the team made the most

of the conditions using the ball wide and counter attacking at any opportunity they were given. Collingwood struggled to keep up with the pace of the game and as the match wore on Waimea were able to regularly cross the try line, in the end comfortably taking the win 52-10. Standout players for Waimea were first five Brad Crisp who controlled the game well and fullback Paddy Smith who

sparked a lot of the attacking move-ments. Winger Dan Smith and flanker Michael Buschl were also very promi-nent throughout the game. This week the team are back at home against Mur-chison who are well known for their hard running and physical style of play, kick off is at 1:15pm. Try scorers: Dan Smith 2, Mitchell Bate-man, Paddy Smith, Michael Buschl, Scott Lines, Michael Bates, Brad Crisp.
