I was a slave girl in Mississippi. Every day, I worked in the fields from morning till night. The sun was hot and the work was hard. My boss hit me if I stopped to rest. Life was terrible.
One day, I heard about a wonderful place in the north – Canada. All people were free there. I wanted to go, but I was scared.
Then one night, I escaped and hid in a swamp. There were insects and snakes, but I didn’t care. I wanted to be free. Some men and dogs started to look for me, so I crossed some streams and rivers. Then the dogs couldn’t follow my smell. To be safe, I walked at night and I hid in the day. To survive, I ate corn and fruit.
I wanted to get to Illinois. There was a group of people in Illinois helping slaves to escape. My journey took me many months, but I finally found the group and they helped me get to Canada. I remember the first moment in my new country. I was so happy – I jumped up and down, and then I got on my knees and kissed the ground.

On 13th February, 2000, Serge and Nicole Roetheli sold all their possessions and began a five-year journey around the world. It wasn’t easy. During their trip, they climbed steep mountains, and crossed arid deserts and shallow swamps. Serge ran and Nicole rode on a motorbike. Why did they go on this 40,000-kilometre journey? They did it to raise money for poor children.
During their travels, Nicole kept an online diary of their adventure. Teachers used Nicole’s diary to help them teach geography and social studies, and thousands of people all over the world read their website every day. Some of these people decided to join Nicole and Serge for part of the journey.
Unfortunately, there were some difficult times. Nicole was often ill. Serge also had problems. For example, in Madagascar a snake bit him. But they still succeeded in raising more than $250,000 for children all over the world. After the long journey, Nicole and Serge didn’t have any money for themselves. Serge said, “We haven’t got any money, but we are extremely rich.”

He was a sea captain and a famous explorer. He made three important journeys. On his first journey in 1770, he arrived in Australia. His ship was the first to sail around New Zealand. On his second journey, he became the first European to cross the Antarctic Circle, but ice stopped him from discovering the continent of Antarctica. On his third journey, he discovered the Hawaiian Islands.
He was a Norwegian polar explorer. In 1903, he discovered the Northwest Passage, a route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Then in 1911, he led the first expedition to the South Pole. In 1926, he became the first person to fly over the North Pole.
He was the first man to walk on the moon. His spaceship left Earth on 16th July 1969 and landed on the moon on 20th July. When he put his foot on the moon, he said the famous words, “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.” He explored the moon for a number of hours and then returned to Earth with his fellow astronauts.
