Linn County Achievement Night The 2017 Linn County Achievement Banquet will be held October 22nd at Linn County 4-H Building with awards at 4:00pm followed by cake and punch. The 4-H Council Officers and Linn County Ambassadors will be helping with the evening.

Miami County Achievement Celebration/4-H Sunday The Miami County Achievement Celebration will be October 8th at 4:30pm at the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church in Paola. This is the celebration when we recognize achievement pin winners, county project award winners, judging team members, and perfect attendance. This year, 4-H Sunday program will be held on Sunday, October 8th at 3:30 pm at Lighthouse Presbyterian Church in Paola. We will then have a Ice Cream Sundae Bar and the 4-H Achievement Celebration will follow.
Club Duties for Miami County Achievement Celebration: Each club needs to bring 2-3 ice cream toppings that afternoon.

Miami County Ambassadors Looking for new members: The Miami County Ambassadors are looking for 4-H’ers who are 8th grade or above to apply to become a Miami County Ambassador and serve a 2 year term. Applications are available on the website at http://www.maraisdescygnes.ksu.edu/p.aspx?tabid=95.

Champions for the Backdrop Three Fires Cattle Company is hosting an open house on October 7th at 20418 KS HWY 7 near LaCygne. The event will begin with lunch at 12:30pm and the educational session begins at 1:30pm. The day will include a fitting demonstration, showmanship clinic, nutrition information, with games and prizes. For more information call Kurt Schwaz at 660-424-3422.
Officer Training Date The District-wide Officer Training will be November 5th at 2pm at Linn County Fairgrounds in Mound City. It will last about 45 minutes to an hour.
Prairie Paws Bow Meow Banquet and Auction If there is anyone interested in making doggie bandanas that Prairie Paws can sell in their gift shop and at their fundraiser on October 14th the Bow Meow Banquet and Auction. After the bandanas are made they will use fabric paint to put the Prairie Paws logs on them. If you are interested in this please contact Sandra Hartley at 913‐557‐3828 or [email protected].

Shooting Sports Shooting Sports- Basic Firearms Classes: Basic Firearms Classes November 9, 14 and 16 at the Miami County Fairgrounds Must attend 2 of the 3. If not able to attend please contact Nancy Simpson (913-710-4382) for other arrangements.
If you are planning on taking one or more of the firearms project, Air Rifle, BB Gun, Shotgun, Muzzle loading or Small-bore rifle the Basic firearms class is required. This class is only required once.--
Other requirements. Minimum age for shooting sports is 8 BB and Archery. Minimum age for Air Rifle/pistol (Pellet), Shotgun, Muzzle loading and shotgun is 12. You must take Air Rifle/BB for one year to be eligible for small-bore, muzzle loading or shot-gun. Small-bore rifle/pistol will require active participation in Air Rifle/Pistol classes.

2017 Kansas 4-H Dog Conference and Quiz Bowl The Kansas 4-H Dog Conference and Quiz Bowl will be October 21-22 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. The theme is “Dogs ‘Я’ Game.” Registration is currently open through the CVent 4-H system with registration closing October 8th, 11:59 p.m. There is a $25.00 can-cellation fee once participants have registered on CVent. To register, visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/events/index.html. Cost is $110.00 for full-time participants, $65.00 for Saturday only and $45.00 for Sunday only. T-shirts and hoodies may be ordered on-line for an additional cost. Full registration information will be posted on the Kansas 4-H Dog web site. Educational sessions will include: Track 1: 1. Freestyle Dog Dancing; 2. Obedience Training Games; 3. Leather Dog Collar Stamp-ing; and 4. Creepy Crawlies that Can Hurt your Dog. Track 2 is open only to current dog teams or dog teams ready to advance into more advanced obedience classes. Special Obedience Training for Graduate Novice, Open A & B, Utility A & B Only. Participants must choose Track 1 classes or follow Track 2. It is not possible to mix-and-match tracks.
The conference will have a special “Minute to 4-H It” contest, a Dogopoly Hunt, dog skill-a-thon, quiz bowl, plus s'mores and much more. All youth must be chaperoned by parent or 4-H leader. County groups will be housed in the same cottage and all dogs must be on leash or kenneled in your room. Owners must pick up and bag after dogs. Leadership Weekend The Forums will be held November 17-19, 2017 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum is for youth ages 14-18 before January 1, 2018 and Kansas Volunteer Forum is for all Kansas 4-H Volunteers. KYLF will feature leadership work-shops, Youth Council Elections, and opportunities to learn and have fun. The Kansas 4-H Volunteer forum will feature workshops and information to help volunteer be more effective. This year participants in both forums will register though the same system. Reg-istration deadline is October 15, 2017 for both events at an early bird rate or before November 1, 2017 at the regular rate. Register online.
Kansas 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus The Citizenship Washington Focus trip will be June 14-25, 2018 - the cost to attend is $1850. Youth who attend this 11 day event will have the opportunity to visit the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Museum of the American Revolution and Gettysburg. We will need a minimum of 35 youth and adults in order to make this trip happen for 2018 so please encourage your friends to sign up if they are interested. Marais des Cygnes District Shooting Sports
Welcome to the 4‐H Shooting Sport Project for Miami and Linn County.
See below for age requirements. The 4‐H Shooting Sports Program teaches young people the safe and responsible use of firearms and archery. The fundamentals of handling, caring for and firing, air rifles, BB guns, Muzzle loading rifles, shotgun and smallbore rifle in addition to archery both recurve and compound. The 4‐H Shooting Sports Program uses the skill and disciplines of shooting to assist young people and their leaders to attain knowledge and develop essential life skills. In learning the rules of firearms safety and safe firearms handling, a young person will learn decision making, safety, science and technology, and youth development as well as social interactions and international communication skills. In learning the rules of firearms safety and safe firearms handling, a young person will learn decision making, develop and inquiring mind and acquire and cultivate a knowledge of wildlife and natural resources. Appealing to young people and volunteers for a wide range of urban and rural backgrounds, the curriculum uses a multidisciplinary approach, involving natural resources, wildlife, outdoor recreation and health. If you do not attend the required classes you will be removed from the project at the extension office for this year. If you have previously taken this class and completed the safety test this class is not required.
