Macon County4-H 478)472-7588 Muqita Lumumba 478)286-0006 cell Junior/Senior DPA 2017 has began with the release of the portfolios from nine of our 4-H members. Repre- senting Macon County this year are 4 Juniors; one 7th grader and four 8th graders but one of them dropped out. For the first time in my tenure at 4-H, we have four 4-H Seniors participating in DPA. These eight 4-H’ers have won half the battle by submitting their portfolios and now they will have to conquer the other half of this process at Camp Rock Eagle. On Saturday February 4, 2017 they will present a speech and post- er or give a musical performance in front of judges. These are brave, dedicated and talented 4-H members. Good luck to them all!!! 4-H Drum Club & The AATM Band Macon County is so very talented and one of the ways that 4-H has show- cased it’s talents is through music. We are so blessed to have two bands in our 4-H club. We have the Drum Club and the Double ATM Band. Both bands were invited to perform at the NAACP Ban- quet at the Preston Williams center in Montezuma for the second year in a row. They gave an outstanding perfor- mance again this year. The Drum Club performed first with Butta (Jhai’Tarriance Banks) leading the club and Jakwon Mclendon beating on the pots with his amazing rhythm. Caleb Forbes and his AATM Band was perfect and the audience loved them. The Drum Club also performed for the Seniors Citizens of our county at the Riverview Senior Center in Oglethorpe last month. We are becoming popular within our county and more organizations are requesting our musical ser- vices. In February on the 11th, we will perform at the Flint Riv- er Farm School Heritage Festi- val; please come out and sup- port your fellow 4-H’ers. 4-H Cloverleafs (4th - 6th grade) will be BEACH bound this summer as we
make our way towards Savannah to Tybee Island for a wonderful experi-
ence. 4-H’ers will tour the Tybee Island Light House and Museum, the
Marine Science Aquarium, go shopping on Tybee Island, enjoy lots of
Ocean swimming, take a cruise along the Savannah River for dinner and
dancing, tour the Haunted Historical sites of the city of Savannah on a trol-
ley ride, search for crabs, play basketball and of course there is that great fun on the beach. Clover-
leafs will leave Macon County on Monday morning June 5 and return on Friday June 9, 2017.
Junior 4-Her’s (7th & 8th graders) will also be BEACH bound this summer. They will be going to
Jekyll Island to one of the South Georgia’s Barrier Islands. This camp is newly renovated and ready
for action. You will compete for the Captain’s Bell, participate in outdoor classes and nature center,
dancing, sports, games, the beach, a bike ride though the Historical District to buy ice cream, canoe-
ing, and a day visit of fun at the Summer Waves Water Park. You will leave on Monday July 3 and
return on Friday July 7, 2017. Make sure you get your deposit fee paid to reserve your space.
Senior 4-H camp will be held at Rock Eagle this summer. If you choose to take this camp challenge,
you will be amongst the first Seniors to attend 4-H Summer Camp from Macon Co.in many years.
As Seniors you will have much more freedom then you had as a Cloverleaf or Junior. Rock Eagle is
the largest 4-H camp in the world. There are newly renovated cabins, 2 swimming pools, the best
food of all the camps, talent shows, games, dancing and of course meeting new 4-H’ers in your own
age group. You will travel to Athens, Ga. to visit the University of Georgia and it’s stadium.
*All Macon County 4Her’s will have an opportunity to raise money towards the pay-
ment of camp by selling Vidalia onions in the upcoming months.

4-H Basketball Club Working Magic With great attempt, the youth of Macon County have stood up to be counted for 4-H Basketball. Last
year on January 15th, the first basketball club meeting was held at the 4-H office. There was a guest appear-
ance from the Houston County Program Assistant Vincent Thomas who is the founder of our basketball
league. Now that we are going into our second year of basketball; it all falls on Coach Keontaye Brown who is
only in the 10th grade. We are still in the infancy stage, however the players have excellent potential. The
club has been meeting every Monday at the Oglethorpe gym. They will have it’s first game of the season on
Thursday January 26 against the Taylor County recreation department. This game will host ages ten and un-
der but there will be games for the older players in the future. Our members as well as our Coach are partici-
pating simply for the love of basketball. We would like to thank Vincent Thomas for his vision of a 4-H Bas-
ketball Club and for his contributions to Macon Co. 4-H basketball club.
We must not forget our wonderful Dancers/Cheerleaders. There are several of them that pop in and
out of the club. This club was founded by Raven Duncan and with her directions and guidance this club has
grown each year and it’s now being managed by Treveyon Brown. Two of the young ladies performed a Praise
Dance at the Riverview Senior Center in Oglethorpe for the 4-H Christmas Concert. (Celena Fiythe and
Ni’Kyriah Oliver). Celena is extremely talented and is able to create her own choreography. Macon County
4-H is so blessed to have so much talent amongst it’s members.
