August & September Updates Young Leaders Applications

If you are in 9th-12th grade and are interested in giving back to your community, helping younger Greene County 4-Hers, gaining leadership experiences, and having fun, then go ahead and join the Greene County Young Leaders! Applications are due by September 1st, 2016, and can be found at the Extension Office or on our website. ____________________________________________

2016-2017 Upcoming Club Meeting Times Please check with your club leader about the first meeting for your club. Some clubs will start meeting in August, and some will not start meeting until September.

**Record Keeping & Award Applications**

Record what you have learned and accomplished this past year in 4-H by completing your 4-H record book! Record keeping forms, help sheets, award packets, and examples can be found at the Extension Office and also on the Greene County 4-H website. Record Keeping Forms ARE NOW AVIALABLE! There have been changes to the Awards Applications. Instead of a separate packet for each age division, there will be 4 different categories; Project Area, Specialty Awards, Nomination Forms & Adult Volunteer Award Forms. Awards Applications will be available the week of August 8, 2016. Record Keeping and Award Packets are due to the Extension Office by September 1st in order to be eligible for county awards. There were new changes to the record keeping process this year. See pages 4-7 of this newsletter for more record keeping information.

The 2016 Greene County Fair was a success! Thanks to everyone for helping with the different fair activities! We have a lot of great volunteers; please be sure to say thanks by sending them thank you cards. Also, be sure to send thank you cards to your premium buyers and award sponsors!

State Fair Exhibit Pick-Up

Don’t forget to pick up your state fair exhibits August 24th – 26th at the Greene County Extension Office.

Fair – Lost & Found Item Extension Staff posted photos of the items that were found during fair on the Greene County 4-H Facebook page. Many items were left so please check the Facebook page or contact the Extension Office if you are missing something.

Shooting Sports Meeting August 18th

The Shooting Sports Club will meet on Thursday, August 18th, at 5:00pm at Slininger Woods. If it is going to rain, then we will have the meeting at the Fort Dodge Gun Club. At the September Meeting, each member and their guardian will need to sign a new waiver for the 2016-2017 year. Families may pick up and sign forms at the Extension Office during office hours.

YOU’RE INVITED to the 2016 Awards Day @ Deals Orchard on October 16:

All 4-H families, members, volunteers, fair

board members, and even new families are invited to join us for the 2016 Awards Day.

There will be activities, a meal served by the Youth Development Committee & an Awards

Ceremony celebrating all of our 4-H’ers accomplishments this past year.

Time: TBD

Be sure to check your email for more information.

Project Meetings

Meetings will continue for beef, dog, rabbit, poultry, and horse project. Project meetings will be new for swine, sheep, & goat exhibitors. Youth planning to show these species will be asked to attend to learn about their project, go over deadlines and fair rules, and have fun!

Scholarships

The Greene County 4-H Foundation makes scholarships available each year to all 4-H

members who participate in pre-approved 4-H trips, camps, and conferences at any level. Members are able to utilize one scholarship

per 4-H year. These scholarships are possible thanks to numerous generous donations, as

well as proceeds from the Clover Café. Contact the Extension Office if you would like

to utilize a scholarship.

Online Re-Enrollment in 4-H

Online Re-enrollment starts in September! Re-enrollment process is ALL ONLINE. Please go to the Iowa 4-H page and you will find the re-enrollment help sheet on the 4hOnline tab under “About 4hOnline.” If you have questions, call the Extension Office during office hours – Monday – Friday 8:00am-4:30pm or e-mail [email protected]. If you need extra help, plan to make an appointment with Extension Staff to enroll online. The online re-enrollment process AND the re-enrollment fee are BOTH due Tuesday, November 15th, 2016. There will be a $25.00 late fee per family if you enroll after November 15th. Step to Follow for Re-Enrollment:

1- Complete online enrollment information through your family account.

2- Make sure your enrollment status says “pending” when you are done. If it says “incomplete” you need to go back through and make sure you completed the correct fields.

3- Bring your $15 Enrollment Fee to the Extension Office.(make checks payable to, “Greene County Extension”)

4- Extension Staff will change your status to “active” when you complete the online enrollment process.

5- Members need to complete the online enrollment AND the enrollment fee payment by Monday, November 15th. A late of $25.00 per family will be in place after November 15h.

New Member Enrollment in 4-H: All new members need to enroll with Kayla. Sarah. If you know of any new members or have a new member in your family joining 4-H, please make an appointment with Kayla to help you get set up! _______________________________________________

2016-2017 Enrollment Fees For the past several years, four local donors have given

generously to the Greene County 4-H program. Instead of the regular $35 annual enrollment fee, Greene County

4-H’ers have to pay only $15 per member to be in 4-H. Donors Names will be announced in the October Newsletter.

Use this Record Keeping Evaluation Checklist Form to make sure you fulfilled all the

requirements for your record book. The form the Youth Development Committee will use has been redone this year but will have the same criteria. Please use this as a template as you fill out your Record Books & Award Applications. All forms will can be found at the

Greene County Extension Office or at our webpage: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/greene/page/member-info.

Awards Day: Specialty Award Requirement MAJOR LIFE SKILLS AWARDS (Grades 9-12) Achievement

To recognize young people who have grown personally through participation in a 4-H projects and programs.

Agriculture

To recognize young people who have growth personally through participation in a variety of agricultural projects and programs.

Ak-Sar-Ben

To recognize 4-H members who are making significant progress toward maturity in leadership through their service for the advancement of the 4-H program in their county or area. Evidence of service as a local club officer, county council member (Young Leaders), junior leader, and participation in county or area camping programs, achievement shows, county fairs, and other events. Recipient need not be an Ak-Sar-Ben participant, but active in local or county levels; area and/or state are optional.

Overall Merit

To recognize those 4-H members whose accomplishments reflect significant personal growth, active citizenship, club and community leadership, competency in project work and unselfish services to 4-H members and others.

Overall Citizenship

To recognize 4-Hers who become aware of relationships to others (family, peers, state, nation and world), and acquire life skills essential to becoming an active, responsible citizen. 4-Her should demonstrate social responsibility and respect, and respond to the needs, rights and responsibilities of others.

Overall Leadership

To recognize 4-Hers who identify and understand roles, attitudes, tasks, and functions necessary for effective leadership; and should strengthen local 4-H units in leadership responsibilities and encouraging other youth. 4-Her participates in program planning, development and implementation, and helps recruit new 4-H members and leaders.

Overall Record Keeping

To recognize 4-Hers who have shown outstanding record keeping performance over their 4-H career. Elements of outstanding record keeping may include initial goal setting, monitoring system of progress towards goals, evaluation of project learning, 4-H participation and activity notations, project enrollment history, financial records, interpretation of cost and production analysis into future decision making, demonstrated organizational skills, display of performance and/or recognition, creative presentation techniques, computer record printouts, and/or other pertinent data.

We Challenge You

4-Hers should demonstrate personal integrity, lead well-rounded lives and possess a willingness to assume responsibility. They do not need to hold leadership positions currently but be recognized by their peers and adults who work with them as emerging leaders.

On behalf of the Greene County 4-H Program, the 4-H Record Book Evaluation Committee presents awards to our adult volunteers who are nominated by their peers, youth and/or staff.

Honorary Member To be eligible for this award, the individual must have never been a 4-H member, and someone who supports the Greene County Youth & 4-H Program in his/her personal life.

4-H Alumni

To be eligible for this award, the individual must have been a 4-H member in any county or state who has continued to promote the goals of 4-H and has displayed continuing interest and support to the Greene County Youth & 4-H Program.

Meritorious Service

To be eligible for this award, the individual(s) must have provided a number of years of service & leadership to the Greene County Youth & 4-H Program.

Friend of 4-H

To be eligible for this award, the individual/business must have promoted the goals of 4-H and have supported the Greene County Youth & 4-H Program personally and/or professionally.

Nomination Award Requirements Nominate a 4-H’er or a Club for each of the following awards.

Junior 4-H Spark Award (Grades 4-6) Intermediate Flame Award (Grades 7-8) Outstanding Intermediate Award (Grades 7-8) Stellar Senior (Grades 9-12)

Financial Assistance Available The Iowa 4-H Foundation and the Greene County 4-H Foundation both provide funds for youth that may need financial assistance to participate in the 4-H program. Families who may need help paying enrollment fees or participating in a camp or trip are eligible, especially if they meet certain eligibility, like free or reduced lunches. If you are interested in learning more, please contact the Greene County Extension Office at 515-386-2138. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

NATIONAL 4-H WEEK is October 2th-8th What is your club doing to spread the word?!? How can you get involved throughout the week?

Decorate Store Windows in Greene County

o Please go into your communities and let people know that it is National 4-H Week! The club that wins will be announced at the 4-H Awards Ceremony in November and will also receive a free pizza party!

Wear your 4-H T-shirt during National 4-H Week! o What a perfect week to show off your 4-H green by wearing your 4-H shirts! You never know who could be in the

schools looking for 4-H shirts!

Refer a New Member to Greene County 4-H o Do you know someone interested in 4-H? When they complete their enrollment information and let me know what

4-Her they were referred by, that 4-H’er will get their name into a drawing to win prizes!

Work at the Greene County Ram Volleyball Game o We will be rounding up youth and adults to work in the concession stand for the October 13th volleyball game.

Wear your 4-H green!
