Field of application: The BGR 120 (formerly ZH 1/119, guidelines for laboratories)stipulates the use of fume cupboards in the laboratory whenevergases, vapours or suspended matter can be released in hazardousconcentrations or quantities. Due to their design and the air flow, fume cupboards ensure that • gases, vapours or dusts cannot escape from the inside of
the fume cupboard into the laboratory room in hazardousconcentrations and quantities,
• an explosive atmosphere cannot develop inside the fume cupboard,
• users are protected against splashes of hazardous substancesor shattering glass by the closed sash.
The field of application is broad, the demands on a suitable fumecupboard depend on its field of application. General fumecupboards, high performance fume cupboards, radionuclide fumecupboards and pharmacy fume cupboards are available to meet thevarious requirements. In many cases, larger quantities of heat orsubstances with low potential to cause harm are regularly releasedin certain areas of the laboratory. The use of bench mounted fumehoods, fume hoods and extraction arms is suitable in these cases.
Köttermann offer suitable fume cupboard and extraction systemsfor every field of application. The Köttermann fume cupboardrange is presented in Section 4.2.
Broad product line: You will find the fume cupboard system well suited for therespective application in the Köttermann product line. There aretwo different ways to assemble a fume cupboard system: 1. with pre-assembled complete fume cupboards whose
fittings can be complimented by accessories such asadditional taps,
2. with custom assembled modular fume cupboards. In thiscase the fume cupboards are assembled with individualmodules according to the user’s requirements.
Pre-assembled complete fume cupboards are presented in Section4.3.1 und 4.4.1. They meet most of the requirements inlaboratories. If the demands are higher, customised systems canbe assembled with modular fume cupboards. Modular fumecupboards are presented in Section 4.3.2 und 4.4.2.

General purpose fume cupboards are suitable for work duringwhich • larger quantities of heat are not released and • aggressive chemicals are not used.
Larger quantities of heat can have a negative effect on the flowconditions inside the fume cupboard, and aggressive substanceswould damage the surface of the fume cupboard interior with longterm exposure.
General purpose fume cupboards are available in two basically different designs: • as a laboratory fume cupboard • as an industrial fume cupboard
(with very large usable dimensions)
Both fume cupboard types can be used universally and meet thesafety requirements regarding ventilation stipulated in DIN EN14175 Part 3 and DIN 12924 Part 1. The different names are onlyused for the purpose of differentiating the two types. The termindustrial fume cupboard simply means that the usable dimensionsof this fume cupboard type meet the special demands of largescale industry.
Pharmacy cupboards are small fume cupboards especially forsmaller jobs such as decanting medicines or volatile solvents inpharmacies. Although their retaining power for harmful substanceswas certified, their suitability for general use in laboratories islimited. Because in most cases higher demands, for example forthe resistance of the worktop material, have to be met.
4.2.1 General purpose fume cupboards
4.2.4 Pharmacy fume cupboards
Bench mounted fume hoods, fume hoods and extraction arms arealso used whenever locally restricted emissions with low potentialto cause harm must be extracted. Typical fields of applicationinclude decanting less toxic substances and the specific extractionof fumes for example in the field of gas chromatography. Benchmounted fume hoods and fume hoods are also suitable fordischarging larger quantities of heat released by muffle furnaces.
This extraction equipment does not replace a laboratory fume cupboard. Because harmful substances are not discharged as wellby bench mounted fume hoods, fume hoods and extraction armsas by laboratory fume cupboards. In addition their capacity is notsubject to any standard with quantifiable limit values.
Radionuclide fume cupboards are used whenever work is carried out with radioactive isotopes. In Germany, this type offume cupboard is obligatory in laboratories from protection classS3 (see DIN 25425-1 „Radionuclide laboratories“, Section 9.13).
Radionuclide fume cupboards are fitted with a seamless stainlesssteel worktop. Radioactively contaminated wastes can flowthrough a duct with a funnel in the worktop and be collected in a canister with electronic filling level monitoring. Radionuclidefume cupboards are sturdy enough to hold the heavy leadprotections.
4.2.3 Radionuclide fume cupboards
High performance fume cupboards – that is: fume cupboards forwork with aggressive services at high temperatures – are usedwhenever • larger quantities of heat are released, as for example when
acids fume off, or • work is carried out with aggressive chemicals.
High performance fume cupboards are available with a tableheight of 900 mm. Their interior is fitted with a lining made ofceramic or polypropylene depending on their field of application. • Due to their high chemical resistance, high performance
cupboards with ceramic lining can be used universally.
4.2.2 High performance fume cupboards
Laboratory fume cupboards are available in three variants:• as a standard fume cupboard with a table height of 900 mm• as a distillation fume cupboard with a table height of 510 mm• as a walk-in fume cupboard
4.2.1.1 Laboratory fume cupboards
Industrial fume cupboards are only available as general purposefume cupboards. The following variants are available:• Standard fume cupboard with a table height of 900 mm• Walk-in fume cupboard
4.2.1.2 Industrial fume cupboards
They are not suitable for work with hydrofluoric acid or acidic fluorides.
• High performance fume cupboards with polypropylene liningare specially fitted for handling hydrofluoric acid. In thesefume cupboards, the panel of the sash is made ofpolycarbonate.
4.2 Fume cupboard range

Depending on their fittings laboratory fume cupboards complywith different standards:• the new European EN• the current German DIN• the current British Standard• the current French standard (AFNOR)
Part 1 and 2 of the new EN 14175 came into force in August 2003.The standard DIN EN 14175 therefore replaces DIN 12924 Part 1.Parts 2–4 of DIN 12924 as well as DIN 25466 will remain in force.
With the new EN 14175 a framework is created which definesuniform standards for dimensions, safety and retention capacityfor harmful substances for fume cupboards in Europe.
EN 14175 Part 3 provides a design check according to whichventilation data will be measured. The new EN does not specifyany limit values. Therefore DIN, the British Standard and AFNORwill retain their significance in the national specification ofventilation limit values also in the future.
All known conditions of the European standard can be fulfilled by Köttermann fume cupboards. This means that standardavailable fume cupboards are not only tested with regard toventilation according to German, British or French standards butalso alternatively according to European standard. Test certificatesconfirm that the fume cupboards are extremely safe and have ahigh retention capacity for harmful substances.
The following German certificates with regard to ventilation areavailable:• General purpose fumes cupboards:
certified according to DIN 12924 Part 1• Standard fume cupboards• Distillation fume cupboards• Walk-in fume cupboards
• High performance fume cupboards:certified according to DIN 12924 Part 2
• Radionuclide fume cupboards:certified according to DIN 25466
• Pharmacy fume cupboards:certified according to DIN 12924 Part 4
• Industrial fume cupboards:certified according to DIN 12924 Part 1• Standard fume cupboards• Walk-in fume cupboards
4.2.7 Test certificates
The fume cupboard range is complimented by a wide range ofaccessories: • Scaffold systems• Fume cupboard controllers • Automatic sash controllers • Extracted air scrubbers • Fume filters • Fume extraction material and fans • Underbench cabinets
• Standard cabinets • Safety cabinets • Acid and base cabinets

Overview of complete fume cupboards, laboratory fume cupboard type
Complete fume cupboards are predefined fume cupboards. Thebasic fittings of the individual types cannot be altered. Completefume cupboards can be supplemented by additional servicesupplies, underbench cabinets and further accessories (Section4.3.1.8 – 4.3.1.10). They meet the basic requirements in
laboratories. Complete fume cupboards have a fixed price and aspecified order number. Modular fume cupboards presented in Section 4.3.2 can be used todesign fume cupboard systems to meet individual requirements.
4.3 Fume cupboards, laboratory fume cupboard type
4.3.1 Complete fume cupboards, laboratory fume cupboard type
The laboratory fume cupboard is the fume cupboard type mainlyused in the laboratory. It can be used for all jobs in the laboratory. It is available in the following variants:• General purpose standard fume cupboards• General purpose distillation fume cupboards • General purpose walk-in fume cupboards• High performance fume cupboards• Radionuclide fume cupboards
The alternative to the laboratory fume cupboard is the industrialfume cupboard. Although specifically designed for the demands oflarge scale industry, it is available to every user that requires extremely large interior dimensions. Both fume cupboard types, laboratory fume cupboard andindustrial fume cupboard, are available in two basically differentvariants:• as a complete fume cupboard – the fume cupboard for
standard applications • as a modular fume cupboard – the fume cupboard for
individual requirements

Dimensions: Widths: Except for high performance and radionuclide fume cupboards, all complete fume cupboards are available in widths of 1200 mm, 1500 mm, 1800 mm and 2100 mm. High performancefume cupboards are available in widths of 1200 mm, 1500 mm and1800 mm. Radionuclide fume cupboards are only available inwidths of 1200 and 1500 mm. The internal widths are 100 mmsmaller than the corresponding external widths.
Depths: All fume cupboards have an external depth of 900 mm.The usable depths can be found in the detailed drawings of thecorresponding fume cupboard.
Heights: The exact specifications of the external height can be found in the detailed drawings of the corresponding fume cupboard. The usable heights are summarised in the followingtable.
Fume cupboards with a high design are used most frequently. In these fume cupboards the front and the casing behind it arethe same height. Fume cupboards for low ceilings are used inrooms with a room height under 3 m. They have the same front asfume cupboards with a high design but a lower housing. Thus it is possible to install the extracted air lines completely behind thefront. The fume cupboard for lower ceilings has a lower usableheight than a fume cupboard with a high design but it meets thesame ventilation requirements.

elCustom assembled modular fume cupboards are assembled withindividual modules according to requirements. Modular fumecupboards can be used to meet requirements that exceed the basicneeds of an average laboratory. It is advisable to leave theassembly of the modules to our planning specialists because the
possibility of mistakes is high. We require detailed information todesign a modular fume cupboard that will fulfill your individualrequirements. We have prepared a form for this purpose found atthe end of this section (Section 4.12). Please feel free to ask usfor help with the assembly of your customised fume cupboard.

Dimensions: Widths: Except for high performance and radionuclide fume cupboards, all modular fume cupboards are available in widths of 1200 mm, 1500 mm, 1800 mm and 2100 mm. High performance fume cupboards are available in widths of 1200 mm, 1500 mm and 1800 mm. Radionuclide fume cupboardsare only available in widths of 1200 and 1500 mm. The internalwidths are 100 mm less than the corresponding external widths.
Depths: All fume cupboards have an external depth of 900 mm.The usable depths can be found in the detailed drawings of thecorresponding fume cupboard.
Heights: The exact specifications of the external height can befound in the detailed drawings of the corresponding fume cup-board. The usable heights are summarised in the following table.
Structure of a modular fume cupboard
A Köttermann modular fume cupboard consists of three major components that can be combined individually: • Interior • Front • Worktop
4.3 Fume cupboards, laboratory fume cupboard type
The overall height of a fully mounted and installed fume cupboardis determined by the following factors:• the height of the fume cupboard carcass (2250 or 2550 mm)• the height of the fully opened sash (2865 or 2380 mm)• the height of the cupboard front (2250 or 2550 mm)• the overall height of the installed fume extraction material.
The following specifications are approximations that must be duly verified in situ during the planning stage. To select thecorrect fume cupboard, it is essential to take all aspects intoconsideration.
When selecting a fume cupboard, observe that the carcass heightplus the overall height of the installed fume extraction material isless than the ceiling height • ceiling height 3 m: standard carcass height 2550 mm;• ceiling height < 3 m: standard carcass height 2250 mm.
The height of the fully opened sash must not exceed the height ofthe ceiling. • ceiling height 2.9 m: standard fume cupboard with
standard sash;
• ceiling height 2.4–2.9 m: standard fume cupboard withtelescopic sash;minimum ceiling height for all walk-in and distillation fumecupboards: 2.9 m
The overall height of the cupboard front must not exceed theheight of the ceiling
• ceiling height 2.4–2.6 m: standard fume cupboard withreduced front (2250 mm);
• ceiling height > 2.6 m: standard fume cupboard with standardfront (2550 mm).
Caution: When installing a fume cupboard in laboratories with lowceilings (< 2.6 m), always use flat extraction ducts if the ceilingopening for the extracted air line is lower than the exhaust airsocket.
Before selecting fume cupboards for areas with low ceilings (< 2.9 m) we recommend consulting our engineering team forassistance in choosing suitable cupboards and fume extractionmaterial.

4.3.2.7 Air flow monitor
The function of the air flow monitor is to ensure the trouble-freeoperation of the fume cupboard. If the volumetric flow is too low,the airflow-monitor gives both a visual and audible signal. Theaudible signal is mutable, the visual signal remains active as longas the fault exists. The air flow monitor is compulsory in fumecupboards that comply with the standards.
The air flow monitor is available in the following design: • combined with a pressure sensor and with digital display of
the extract volume (in m3/h)
An air flow monitor with a flow sensor is also available onrequest.
Technical features: • Alarm functions when the extract volume range is too low or
too high• Visual and acoustic alarm (battery-back-up) • Digital display of extract volume or face velocity • Communication with the building management system BMS
via potential-free contacts • for night reduction • for reporting an unsafe operating state
• Commissioning of external equipment such as extracted airscrubbers and fans
• Separate fume cupboard light circuit

Köttermann fume cupboards operate with a constant extractvolume regardless of the sash position. Therefore costly controlsfor the room supply air are not required. In many cases the uncontrolled constant volume fume cupboard is the most economical solution.
Fume extraction control is useful whenever all the fume cupboardscombined extract more air out of the room than the prescribedlaboratory air change. In this case the expensive preconditionedair would be wasted and unnecessary costs incurred.
Fume extraction controls take advantage of the fact that therecommended extract volume for fume cupboards is designed forthe worst operating state – operation with fully opened sash. Ifthe sash of an uncontrolled fume cupboard is closed, the inflowarea is reduced so that the face velocity through the sash level isincreased when volumetric flow is constant. This high face velocity is not necessary for a safe operating state.
Fume extraction controls ensure that the extracted air volumetricflow is regulated depending on the sash opening by a motorisedcontrol damper. In this way, for every operating state of the fumecupboard, only the minimum quantity of air is extracted from thelaboratory that is required for safe operation of the fume cupboard. Fume cupboards with closed sash require less air thanfully opened ones.
Köttermann offer two different fume extraction controls: • The two-point control distinguishes between “sash open”
and “sash closed” and regulates the extracted air betweentwo setpoint values, the maximum and the minimum value.
• The continuous control adjusts the extract volume exactly tothe sash opening and regulates the extracted air between theminimum and maximum values.
All control system parameters, including the extracted air volumemonitoring and alarming in accordance with DIN 12924, Part 1,can be custom configured with a service module or a personalcomputer (PC) on site.
To save energy we recommend always using the fume extractioncontrol together with an automatic sash controller because theextracted air volume reaches its minimum value only when thesash is closed.
Specifications: • Constant face velocity • Control time: under 2 s • Direct servo motor actuation • Redundant sensor monitoring • Predictive control algorithm • Can be freely parameterised• Automatic self-learning mode • Printout of all system data • Diagnosis function • DDC connection • Local control inputs • Remote control inputs (4 inputs) • Potential-free relay outputs • 2 standardised analog outputs
We are happy to provide the exact control specifications as well asthe ventilation values for controlled fume cupboards on request.
Note: Fume cupboard controls are generally not compatible withevery fume cupboard type. We are happy to help you put togethersolutions to meet your individual requirements.

4.4 Fume cupboards, industrial fume cupboard type
The industrial fume cupboard was specially developed for thedemands of large scale industry. With regard to blow-out safety it complies with all requirements of DIN EN 14175 Part 3 and DIN 12924 Part 1, however it deviates in some points from thepreferred dimensions of the DIN standard. The industrial fumecupboard is an attractive alternative for all users that requireextremely large interior dimensions.
Similar to laboratory fume cupboards, industrial fume cupboardsare available in two basically different variations:• as a complete fume cupboard – the fume cupboard for
standard applications• as a modular fume cupboard – the fume cupboard for
individual requirements

Any of the underbench cabinet types of the acid and base cabinetscan be selected (Section 3.3). Underbench cabinets can be installed under the entire width of the undustrial fume cupboards.
All cabinets are available with built in fan (Section 3.3). We recommend the use of external fans, however, because • external fans do not take up valuable cabinet space, • running noises of external fans are not heard in the
laboratory and • fans should be installed as close as possible to the outlet
to keep the ductwork under negative pressure.
Additional fume extraction material is required for the operationof acid and base cabinets (Section 6). At assembly at least • 4 m of flexible extract duct • 2 duct clamps must be available for the installation of a cabinet in order tolocate the extract points for the on site ventilation outside thefume cupboard.
Material of all acid and base cabinets: polypropylene (PP), light grey (similar to RAL 7035).

Custom assembled modular fume cupboards are assembled withindividual modules according to requirements.
We have prepared a form for this purpose found atthe end of this section (Section 4.13). Please feel free to ask usfor help with the assembly of your customised fume cupboard.

*In compliance with DIN, sashes without sliding panels or ports are only permissible in high performance fume cupboards. Their use istechnically possible in general purpose industrial fume cupboards but does not comply with DIN.
One-piece sashes with a continuous panel are used wheneverregular access into the interior is not required. In compliance with DIN this sash type is only admissible in high performancefume cupboards.
Sashes with sliding panels provide optimum bodily protectionbecause they can be pushed together in front of your body whileyou work. The sash is subdivided depending on the external width.
All one-piece sashes of the standard fume cupboards can be fittedwith an automatic sash controller that provides for more safetyand energy savings during laboratory operation.
The sash controller constantly monitors the working area of thelaboratory fume cupboard via a passive infrared detector (PIR).
4.4.2.4 Automatic sash controller
As soon as the operator moves from the front of the industrialfume cupboard, the fully automated closing operation of the sashstarts. A light barrier detects objects that protrude from theinterior over the sash level and stops the closing operation.

4.4.2.7 Air flow monitor
The function of the air flow monitor is to ensure the trouble-freeoperation of the fume cupboard. If the volumetric flow is too low,the airflow-monitor gives both a visual and audible signal. Theaudible signal is mutable, the visual signal remains active as longas the fault exists. The air flow monitor is compulsory in fumecupboards that comply with the standards.
The air flow monitor is available in the following design: • combined with a pressure sensor and with digital display of
the current extract volume (in m3/h)
An air flow monitor with a flow sensor is also available onrequest.
Technical features: • Alarm functions when the extract volume range is too low
or too high• Visual and acoustic alarm (battery-back-up) • Digital display of extract volume or face velocity • Communication with the building management system BMS
via potential-free contacts • for night reduction • for reporting an unsafe operating state
• Commissioning of external equipment such as extracted airscrubbers and fans
• Separate fume cupboard light circuit

Köttermann fume cupboards are operated with a constant extract volume regardless of the sash position. Therefore costlycontrols for the room supply air are not required. In many casesthe fume cupboard with uncontrolled constant volume is the mosteconomical solution.
In this way, for every operating state of the fumecupboard, only the minimum quantity of air is extracted from thelaboratory that is required for safe operation of the fumecupboard.

4.5 EN sets for fume cupboards
Depending on their fittings, laboratory fume cupboards complywith different national standards, such as the German DIN, theBritish Standard or the French AFNOR. The new EN 14175combines all national standards and creates a framework havinglegal force all over Europe with uniform provisions. Part 1 and 2 ofthe new EN 14175 came into force in August 2003 and replacedDIN 12924 Part 1. DIN 12924 Part 2 – Part 4 as well as DIN 25466will remain in force.
The new EN 14175 makes increased demands on fume cupboardswith regard to safety and retention capacity for harmful substances. In detail EN 14175 provides new test procedures for the retentioncapacity for harmful substances as well as the limitation of thework opening of the sash to a height of 600 mm at most – with apreferred dimension of 500 mm. The new EN does not howeverspecify any ventilation limit values which must be observed.
All known conditions of the European standard can be met byinstalling an EN set in the Köttermann fume cupboards. Fume cupboards with an EN set meet not only the Germany requirementsaccording to DIN 12924 but also the European requirements according to DIN EN 14175.
The EN set can be installed later if required. This applies to fumecupboards delivered from 2001. EN sets are available for thefollowing fume cupboards:• Laboratory fume cupboard type
• Standard fume cupboards: high designlow designHigh performance fumecupboardsRadionuclide fume cupboards
• Distillation fume cupboards• Industrial fume cupboard type
• Standard fume cupboards
EN set includes:• 1 inflow profile of stainless steel to be fastened to the
worktop• 2 side wings of stainless steel to be fastened to the left and
right fume cupboard column• only for standard fume cupboards: 1 sash limiter to be
installed in the left fume cupboard column (positioned atopening height of 500 mm)

Bench mounted fume hoods are used for extracting non-hazardouscontaminants that are released, for example, during decanting.Because they are enclosed on three sides they have an excellentextraction capacity. Bench mounted fume hoods cannot replacelaboratory fume cupboards because they are not certified withregard to ventilation.

4.10 Extraction arms
270
Extraction arms are used whenever locally restricted, selectiveemission sources are to be ventilated. Thanks to their verticallyadjustable swivel arm, the extraction head can be positionedexactly above the contaminant source. Extraction arms cannotreplace laboratory fume cupboards because their extractioncapacity is limited. Extraction arms are available in three variants: • with mounting plate for wall mounting; also suitable for
installation in service walls and boom systems if a suitableservice cassette is available
• with mounting plate for ceiling mounting • including installation kit for service columns

4.11 Extracted air scrubbers
272
Field of application:Extracted air scrubbers are used to clean fumes. Generally allcontaminants that are water-soluble can be washed out. Examples are stated below.
Examples for application of extracted air scrubbers: • Water-soluble acids
• Water-soluble bases/lye • Ammonia • Some organic amines
The following questions will help you select the right scrubber type:
4.11.1 How to select the right scrubber type?
The washing-out rate primarily depends on the water-solubility ofthe contaminant and must be clarified for individual cases. Therate ranges from 90 – 95% in the group of highly water-solubleacids. The contaminant is accumulated in the waste water of thescrubber. Usually the waste water is discharged into the sewagesystem, however, the respective local regulations must beobserved. As a rule the waste water has to be neutralised. Inindividual cases it may be necessary to install a downstreamsystem for reducing specific contaminants.
Can the contaminant be washed out?

Extracted air scrubbers are available as attached and sidescrubbers. The decision depends on the room height and theavailable floor space on site: • Attached scrubbers are set on the fume cupboard and
require a ceiling height of at least 3 m. They must be planned together with a suitable scrubber housing.
• Side scrubbers are installed in a separate 900 mm widescrubber cabinet that stands next to the fume cupboard. Side scrubbers must be planned together with a suitablescrubber cabinet.

Extracted air sprayer
The extracted air sprayer can be used in all laboratory fume cupboard type fume cupboards. However their use is only appropriate together with high performance fume cupboards, unlike the general purpose fume cupboard which is designed forthe special contamination with aggressive gases. This facilityrequires an additional depth of 150 mm.
4.11.4 Extracted air sprayer
The Köttermann extracted air sprayer is under certain conditionsan economical alternative to the extracted air scrubber. With theextracted air sprayer the fume cupboard extracted air can besprayed with fresh water intensively. This can significantly reducethe content of water-soluble hazardous gases.
Extracted air sprayers are designed for occasional use. The washwater is directly routed into the sewage system and not run in acircuit for contaminant accumulation - as is customary with ext-racted air scrubbers. Thus, although the purchase price of the extracted air sprayer is very low, its operating costs are quitehigh.
