5

crushing hazards can exist when setting up the rig

always stand clear; keep hands and other body parts away

Page 6: 4 Caught Between

6

while tripping in/out, a worker can get caught between tongs or spinning chain

Page 7: 4 Caught Between

7

worker’s fingers or hands can get smashed when setting the slips

always keep hands on the handles

Page 8: 4 Caught Between

8

workers’ hands or thumbs can get caught between the elevator and the stump

always place hands on designated handles

this worker is cutting through a bad spot while the truck is moving

Corrective Actions: never take chances like this when the space is this limited; wait until the truck parks

Page 10: 4 Caught Between

10

Corrective Action: ensure that the truck is in park and the parking brake is set

the bed of the truck and the sled could come together crushing these two workers’ legs

Corrective Action: after tongs are together, step out of the way

12

observe all warning signs and use caution around pinch point areas

Page 13: 4 Caught Between

13

mechanical equipment has moving parts that can become pinch points

it is important that all the guards are in place to reduce pinch points

Page 14: 4 Caught Between

14

belt and pulleys of machines are common pinch points

ensure that the guarding is installed; do not place hands in the area while machine is operating

Page 15: 4 Caught Between

15

this cable spool is a good example of a device that has rotating parts that are caught-between hazards

do not put your hands onto or into anything that can pinch or crush them

Page 16: 4 Caught Between

16

workers can get caught between two joints of pipe or between a pipe and another object

handle pipe carefully and use mechanical equipment whenever possible

Page 17: 4 Caught Between

17

choking up on tools and smashing fingers is very common

the first 6” of this handle is painted red to indicate that hands should not be placed there

19

many caught-between hazards exist while tripping pipe, including this one

always use designated handles and, even then, use caution to keep from getting your hands and fingers smashed

Page 20: 4 Caught Between

20

hands and fingers can get caught while maneuvering stands of pipe

what can a worker do to keep hands from getting pinched or crushed?

Page 21: 4 Caught Between

21

this worker is using a tag line, keeping his hands free from crushing hazards

when your hands get to the end of the tagline, there should be a knot for grip

here’s what could happen

Page 23: 4 Caught Between

23

Corrective Action: do what needs to be done before the load is suspended or use blocking

Page 24: 4 Caught Between

24

ever think about the clothes you wear? clothing can get caught in moving parts

tuck in or don’t wear loose clothing

Memory CheckMemory Check2. Which of the following is the best way to

prevent pinch point injuries?a. post pinch point signs to warn workersb. whenever possible, guard the pinch point so

no part of the body can enter the pinch point area
