The month of August was a busy month for the university. There was the opening season of a major sporting event, the Inter-Scholastic Athletic As-sociation (ISAA), which saw the FEATI Seahawks basketball team winning the first game of the sea-son. We held a Recognition Day especially reserved for FEATI scholars, artists, sci-entists, and board-passers.

With a full calendar, more than enough room was made to ensure that Buwan ng Wika was observed, albeit simply; yet, with meaningful and relevant activities.

Thus on August 16, 2012, the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE) marked the event with the theme, “Wikang Pilipino, Lakas ng Pagka-Pilipino.” Hosted by Mark Joseph E. Mendoza and Marilou C. Bernarte, the one day program graced by the University President, Dr. - Ing Adolfo Jesus R. Gopez, became a celebration of music, play production, and competition. Medals and cash prizes were given away in contests that have been lined up such as: Slogan and Poster Making, Essay Writing, “Biglaang Talumpati,” and “Deklamasyon.” FEATInians flocked to the Mass Communications Laboratory Room to watch the play – “New Yorker in Tondo” produced by Mass Communication students.

The relevance of celebrating Buwan ng Wika according to Prof. Salve Tan Sacaguing, Arts and Communications Department Head, can be found by quoting our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, “Ang taong di magmahal sa sariling wika ay higit pa sa hayop at malansang isda. “For me our national language is the soul of our country.” “It gives us our identity and unites us all.” “It is the reason why we are called the “Filipino People” or the “Filipino Nation.” “Thus, we need to celebrate the “Buwan ng Wika” to give impor-tance to our native tongue as well as to value Manuel Luis Quezon who is our Ama ng Wikang pambansa.” “In celebrating the Buwan Ng Wika, we give thanks for our national language.” “We also recognize and salute the Fili-pino Race.” “It is but proper that we celebrate it.” She articulately quipped. The CASE team, Dr. Milagros P. Navarro, Prof. Salve T. Sacagu-ing, Prof. Glaiza Rose Blanca, Dr. Dorisday Revilleza, Dr. Emerenciana T. Angeles, Dr. Divine Reyes, Ms. Saxs Gabrielle P. Santos, Ms. Genalyn Ru-bio, Mr. Vincent Ronquillo, Ms. Beth Chua, and Ms. Nancy Cabuhat thank everyone for their active participation and support of the event. (AMD)-Events and Promotions

The College of Maritime Education (CME) held the “Mari-time Week” at the Activity Center in line with the celebration of the National Seafarer’s Day (NSD) last September 24, 2012. The event had the theme “Marinong Pilipino: Dakila pa rin ang Kagitingan.”Sports fest was one of the highlights of the program. It was organized by Mr. Derick John Mestio, president of “The Pirates.” The sports ac-tivities included competitions in basketball, badminton, darts, chess, and sepak takraw. The blessing of the new Fast Rescue Boat was also done.Seminar in “Basic Safety and Rescue” was initiated by the Philip-pine Coastguard. At the end of the week long program, the winners were hailed. However, the real winners here are the CME students who participated actively in the celebration. Long live Marineers!

By Roselyn C. Masilungan The COB Week held last August 27 to September 1, 2012 was suc-cessfully celebrated. Students, faculty and staff from the college participat-ed in the various activities during the week long celebration. “Kapehang Fea-tino” a cafe, organized by the students to raise funds, served coffee, frappe, patries and doughnuts to the buying customers. Seminars also occurred with themes, namely: “Corporate Social Responsibility: Doing Good Mat-ters” and “Learning for Life: A Personality Development and Work Ethics”.To strengthen the bond of Tourism and Business Administration students, teambuild-ing was initiated by their instructor Ms. Erlly Yarbes. Students were able to enhance their skills, talents and leaderrship through the activities. The COB week created op-portunities for the students to practice what they have been studying in their classes.

Excellence: A Key to Success We now live in a world wherein everything is instant. Ev-eryone is rushing things out. As the world turns on its axis, people and things change swiftly too. Even our environment is not normal for the climate has already changed. On the whole, the world gives us all the prob-lems we can ever think of. Things really go fast and we do not notice what has happened until it is done. If this is our ambiance, can we still achieve success? Can we still have our coveted dreams?

As students, we need to meet all the requirements for us to gradu-ate. Requirements that are not easy to accomplish. Blood and sweat must be harnessed to get the evidence. For instance, we have to study hard to pass the exams. Sometimes they are quite easy. Other times they are so difficult that we really have to sweat it out to pass these tests. And then a number of our mentors will let us sleep with a lullaby while several of them will give

us sleepless nights. In any case, we are being trained to face our real battles in life. We are taught that if we cannot change our destiny, we simply have to change our attitude to cope with the situation.

The way to success is a rocky road, but in time we will make it. We

don’t have to imitate this world wherein everything is done in a rush, because we are already liv-ing in it - in this “instant” world. On the contrary, what we have to do is to observe the happen-ings in our surroundings patiently and practically. To cherish the moments with people we love. To be positive in everything we do. To learn from the great. For

“Lives of great men, all remind us that we can make our lives sub-lime.” – (H.W. Longfellow). And to have the commonsense to do good things tirelessly so that we harvest and taste sweet success.

It is not the lines on our palms that we must follow, but it is our brave decision to excel we must pursue. Finally, we have to conquer ourselves and remain humble as we work in the direction of excellence and in our vision of success.

Air Conditioning Units As we can see our university is improving especially in terms of facilities. We now have an ef-fective flood control system. Likewise, the building construction as well as the ground floor landscaping is in progress. Furthermore, our classrooms at the 3rd floor have air conditioning units. However, there are rooms where in the air-con units are not functional. There are also rooms which air-con units cannot efficiently cool. Thus, we would still open the four wall fans to provide us comfort. Isn’t this a waste of money? Again, there are rooms without chairs and tables. These have been reported months ago. Unfortunately, these problems have not been fixed. Meanwhile, every time we attend our classes in the morning, we wonder who will switch on the air-con units because our teachers don’t have the remote control. Our professors find it hard to teach in this uncomfortable atmosphere due to the noise of the electric fans inside the room. We actually become out of focus with our studies because of this problem with air-con units. We call on our school officials to please act on this matter as soon as possible. Your good intentions are useless until such time you take an appropriate action.

The Newly Added Accessories Every educational institution has its own identity; this is usually seen through the student’s uniform. It is nice to see a student wearing pre-sentable outfit. Here at FEATI University, we are known for wearing the all blue outfit, blue polo and blouse with scarf. Our uniform is indeed elegant. Recently, the school administration decided to add some accessories and modification to our uni-forms. So now, all the girls in school are required to wear high heeled shoes while the boys should wear the garrison belt with university’s logo. An aero student must wear his nameplate within the campus while the marines are required to have six pocket pants embroi-dered with the FEATI logo placed on the right part at the back of their pants. These added accessories are not for free, we are all obliged to buy these items. In effect, many of us complained because of the sud-den implementation of these regulations. We are all surprised that these additional expenses were imple-mented in the middle of the semester like what hap-pened on the “No permit No exam policy” last year. We, the students in quandary, show the school officials could be so insensitive to impose these new rules without even meeting us for consultation. We are

the ones affected because we have to wear the stuff. Girls are complaining because they have to buy new shoes and suffer walking uncomfortably with them around the campus. Marine students feel so conscious because of the logo placed on their right butt. As a result many Featinians are disgusted with these rules. They then suffer community service for not complying with these newly imposed regulations.

We would like to point out that we are not manne-quins which can be garbed with whatever apparel or attire that people want it/them to wear. We are humans reacting vehe-mently to these policies because we are already suffering a lot.

We do believe that there is no sense in complaining without even trying. We have obeyed despite our misgiv-ings on the matter. We now have the right to complain. We understand the objective but we do not concur to the manner by which these rules have been imposed on us.

Invisible professors Professors are important to the students. Their role is to guide and to teach the students in school. They help students by molding their character and by enhancing their knowledge. They are the ones that stu-dents admire and follow. They are the mentors that must encourage and keep students achieve excellence. It’s almost close to Preliminary Examinations and Christmas Vacation but until now some of the professors/ instructors of the different departments are not yet seen/meet by their respective students either in classrooms or in the university. We all know that it has almost been a month since the second semester 2012-2013 started. This matter is now being questioned by our studentry. It is reported to us so they get to know where those invisible professors are. Students who go to their respective class-rooms would wait patiently for 2 to 3 hours for their class but in the end no instructor or professor would come. This happened not just once. We may understand if there is a no-tice upon the absence of the professor but since there’s none then we are puzzled by it. This pushes students to give poor statements against the university in terms of hiring instruc-tors who cannot meet the student’s needs and expectations. As Featinians, we need qualified professors. Profes-sors who have time for us students. We need them to help us learn and attain excellence. We go to school early because we are eager to learn. Yet, it is a big disappointment on our part to know that our professors/instructors are nowhere to be found. The Featinian Publication did not fashion this seg-ment to make any form of disparagement nor denunciation. It only seeks integrity, accountability, and equality from all the members of the FEATI Family who form part the ide-als of FEATI as a highly-esteemed educational institution. Heads up, FEATINIANS, because things are looking up.

FeatiniaN 5EDITORIALSECTIONTRAVERSE“Digital Karma”

by Mark Joseph E. Men-doza

Nowadays, a number of peo-ple use the internet because it

gives them the power to express their feelings freely. It keeps them tab with the latest news. In fact, many find the internet very important but do they use it properly?

Well, the internet has become a major source of information. With it, we can search almost everything under the sun. We use it to study, socialize and some-times gamble. It connects us all or everyone at any given time around the world. It is the “Net” that easily spreads news. As a mass communication tool it can also make anybody instantly famous with just one click. Like what happened to Zeendee Rose, who has just recorded singing on a mall and named “Random Girl.” At pres-ent, she is a certified singer and it is a blessing for her.

How about the girl caught by the cam at the LRT station and criticized by the public as the

“Amalayaaaar girl?” It is a curse for her. These are examples of how internet affects the lives of people. It can build opportunities and destroy others’ dignity. We can find solutions from it; however, we can also create problems with it. Internet is such a powerful thing indeed. We need to be very responsible in us-ing it. We should take into account that in just a snap we have already changed ones’ life. Maybe we can be thoughtful enough to care about the lives of other people. We are here on earth for others, not only for ourselves. Internet does give us power but with power comes great responsibility. by some experts and they arrived at this conclusion: “The End” is going to be this December 21, 2012. It’s not a nice thought that the end is just a few sleeps away but there are so many predictions about the end times that were just false alarms. Like last year, Harold Camping predicted that May 21, 2011 would be “The first day of judgment” and October 21, 2011 would be the end of the world. Whether the world is going to end this time, nobody can tell. Even the Bible says that the end of the world is unpredictable and that man must always be prepared. In addition to keeping watch, one might also want to make a list of how he/she is going to spend his/her last days. Here are some suggestions: First, eat whatever you like and try new food. It’s good to know the taste of a peanut butter sand-wich with ketchup before you die. Second, overcome your fears. This one is always included in my list of resolutions every new year. However, everyone knows that new year’s resolutions are always a major failure. Third, dive in the Pasig River, and you might discover why some children enjoy swimming there so much. So you’re starting to think that I’m weird, but I hope you do understand what I am getting at. It’s about trying new and exciting things, right? The list can go infinite and whatever is included on your list, never forget the most important of all, your “Salva-tion.” Establish and maintain your relationship with Christ, because when everything is gone, only Him and His faithful servants shall live forever. So enough of parties or partying. Do more soul-searching instead.

NOSTALGIC“The Essence of Christmas”

by Mary Jane Yonzon

Christmas is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. The entire Christen-dom celebrates it every 25th of December. How-ever, the designated day is not factual but merely became a customary practice. Anyhow, Christmas for me is not the date of his birth in the flesh, but for our Lord Jesus Christ to be born in our hearts.

KIBITZER“Winning blow”by Streter Olosan Have you ever asked what the best technique

in a game is? Players, sometimes even coaches themselves, when faced with this dilemma ask: What is the best technique to deliver the winning blow? What moves should be done or executed? Given a certain situation, what is the best tech-nique? Is asking the best technique important at all? The answer depends on the situa-tion, on the team, on the fighter, on the en-emy. More importantly, the decision making on which technique to use that can yield the best result should be based on the actual competition In winning a game, the most effective tech-nique is the one that works for the player. The choos-ing and using of technique is similar to the analogy on how we approach the most basic of things in life in doing something. We use spoon for rice not knife, a toothbrush for our teeth and not a ball pen. A player should have a good offensive game and a good inside game. The technique should be executed well and must be appropriate for the body structure to give comfort to the player in motion. A very young player could discern his skills when training is applied. Eventually, the player’s style comes out and vis-à-vis with this is the ability to determine the best technique which is to per-fect a style that fits the player in a given situation.

CADET’S MOMENTUM“I’m counting on you”by: Melvin T. Besin

Six months from now, new faces in politics will govern our country. Six months from

now, new administration will rule our motherland. But Six months from now, will our hope and aspi-ration to liberate this land of poverty come true? The upcoming election 2013 is another chapter for the Filipinos to create and make things anew. Let’s review the past to avoid doing the same mistakes all over again. Let us vote wisely and choose our fu-ture leaders with great care. As voters, let us not be cowed by guns or enticed by gold. Our elected lead-ers must lead us to progress and not to disgrace. We need leaders of transformation. New leaders who have the political will to implement changes. Change is of paramount importance. New leaders promise new hope. We take this as a step for the Filipinos to have a better life, quality education, proper shelter, well-exercised human rights, reduced unemployment, and less corruption to let everyone eat three times a day. This is not just wishful thinking. We want to realize these things. That is why we have to choose

VENI, VIDI, VICI Top, Middle and Bot-tom by Ramon Delfin

“Where can I find a place or a person with plenty of money?

Will my professors accept my test paper even with-out a permit?” “Another grading period another payment,” These are the thoughts of a problemat-ic student who has to pay an expensive tuition fee. It is usual for students to opt for an in-stallment basis because they cannot afford to pay instantly the huge tuition and miscellaneous fees. Oftentimes, students choose their schools using these criteria: Tuition fee, availability of the course that they will pursue, quality education, ex-perienced teachers, great facilities, location of the school and its fame. In our university the tuition fee as well as its miscellaneous is a big burden for aver-age families. A student here actually pays 30,000 to 48,000 pesos per semester. Hence, students try to find ways to lessen the burden by joining organi-zations, and doing extra effort to become a scholar (Dean’s lister, Presidential, Board of trustees, etc.| Meanwhile, there are also students who just waste their money by not attending their classes regularly. As a result, they fail their quizzes and tests, and they ultimately drop their subjects. These students do not think nor care about the sacrifices and hardships of their parents in sending them to school. They never thought that someone out there wishes to see them achieve their goals in life. To the students who are having a hard time keeping up with their studies due to finan-cial problems always remember this quote: “Life is like a wheel. In the blink of an eye, you can be anywhere, top, middle or even at the bottom.”

honest leaders who would not use their powers for their own aggrandizement. We do not put into of-fice a bunch of crooks that will pull dirty tricks and scams on us. There is no room for an immoral politician who will just loot our nation’s wealth. All of us dream that people with good heart and soul be elected. Yet, do we share in the responsibility of pick-ing the right person to lead us? We cannot deny that sometimes we allow ourselves to be used as pawns by these dirty politicians who have no conscience at all. Same act of dishonesty, manipulation, and wickedness will happen eventually. Just think of those saintly faces of candidates cloak with hellish aims waving proudly to the voters to gain their votes. It is hard to search for the best leader who will make our dreams come true. Maybe this 2013 election would be the same as before if Filipinos are not vigilant. On the other hand, this could sig-nal the end of suffering and moaning of hunger. Would that hope and aspiration we seek six months ago do come true? I believe that evil men with bad deeds only thrive and prosper when good people do nothing to stop them. Thus, stand up and be counted.

Christmas is not about celebrating a day eating lots of food, getting drunk in parties, having reconciliation with your enemies, wearing costly ap-parel or helping needy people in so short a time. It is not just about remembering the birth of Jesus Christ on earth. It is something much deeper than these. Jesus Christ signifies PEACE, HOPE and LOVE. When we have Christ in our hearts, we will have PEACE of mind. We will never com-mit suicide because HOPE exists. We would then learn how to LOVE. We do not have to wait for Christmas Time before we strive again to do good things to our fellowmen. We should have an open

heart and a helping hand to all the people around us. Everyday must be Christmas day so that PEACE, HOPE, AND LOVE resides in our hearts not just in a day, a month, a season, but as long as we live.

It’s the time of year when good friends are dear…and chocolate is one of the most popular holiday gifts! Go ahead, indulge. It may not be addictive and wou ld not make a giver guilty. Even though chocolate is usually eaten for pleasure, it h a s p o t e n t i a l l y m a n y h e a l t h e f f e c t s .Dark chocolate may positively affect the circulatory system. According to research, limited amounts of dark chocolate appear to help prevent heart disease. A report indicated that melting chocolate in one’s mouth produced an increase in brain activity and heart rate that was more intense than that associated with passionate kissing, and also lasted four times as long after the activity had ended. Studies have shown dark chocolate as part of a low-fat diet can lower cholesterol levels in adults. Because it’s rich in fiber, dark chocolate can actually help keep you full, so you’ll eat less, and may even reduce crav-ings for sweet, salty and fatty foods. (http://en.wikipedia.org)A small Italian study found out that regularly eating choco-late increases insulin sensitivity, thereby reducing risk for diabetes. A type of antioxidants called flavonoids found in chocolates offer some protection from UV (ultraviolet) dam-age, therefore, it’s good for your skin. Another ingredient in chocolate called theobromine seems to reduce activity of the vagus nerve, the part of the brain that triggers cough. Cocoa has anti-clotting and blood-thinning properties, thereby improving blood flow and help lower blood pressure, increase blood flow to the retina giving vision a boost, smooth blood flow to the brain making people more awake and alert and may suppress symptoms of migraines. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com)Milk chocolate health benefits include better brain reaction and impulse control. Studies also showed that the nutrients in the cocoa and milk content of milk chocolate aid in glucose release, increase blood flow and augment cognitive perfor-mance. In addition, milk chocolate also contains high levels of potassium and magnesium that provide several vitamins such as B1, B2, D and E. Meanwhile, the health benefits of eating white chocolate or the “pretend” chocolate (called chocolate only because of its cocoa butter content) may not be similar to those from dark or milk chocolates but there are other positive effects. These are primarily the vitamins

JOSHUA: a friend, musician, and a scholar By Mark Joseph E. Mendoza

Born on December 8, 1992 to Ro-drigo and Wenee Sarasua, Joshua grew up with firm principles and dreams for his future. He finished his secondary education at the City of Mandaluyong Science High School and is currently a 4th year Aeronautical Engineering student at FEATI. I usually see him with friends at the canteen, at the library, on hallways or in his class-room. He likes to play chess, solve puzzles, and play musical instruments. He is an avid user of the Internet.

Joshua is a consistent Don Salvador Scholar. He routinely gets perfect scores on exams, especially in mathematics and other sciences. He is affiliated to the following organizations: Aviation Society for Re-search and Development (ASRAD) and Society for Aerospace Engineers of the Philippines - Student Chapter (SAEP-SCF). He states that: “I believe in God and I believe in science.” “ I don’t see the contradiction between them unlike what others do.” “This may raise some eyebrows, but this is what I adhere to.” Excellence for him is something that is be-yond the norm. He dreams about the revolution in science. Even with everything going for him, Josh remains humble but grateful. He be-lieves that all the things in his life are just challenges to be solved and conquered. Featinians, he is Joshua Sarasua, the epitome of excellence.

Chaplain’s CornerBlessed Child of Bethlehem, our source of Life and LoveRev. Fr. Ferdinand S. Tomo, SSS

We Filipinos have the earliest and longest celebration of Christ-mas compared to other Christian nations. Part of the traditional prepara-tion that we have is the

“misa aguinaldo” or dawn masses usually celebrated

starting from 16th of December until the 24th of December. As early as October, malls and com-mercial establishments decorated their spaces with the festive mood of the Yuletide season al-ready, gift packs from different types of groceries and other food items, personal effects, wine and spirit, etc. are displayed already in their shelves. In the new millennium, in the era of modern technology, computers and internet our disposition and way of celebrating Christmas somewhat has shifted into something superficial and impersonal. Instead of sending your personalize Christmas card for example, you can send it through email or by using the social media. The modern world has influenced us in the way we perceive things and manipulate our whole being especially in our decision making. Now, its Christmas time again, what is there awaiting for us? What do we hope for? Personally when I think of Christmas, I think of the many gifts that we take and receive the gifts that we give in return. There is an exchange of gift, an exchange of goodness and love and the Spirit of the season. But as we mature in our

own understanding of the true Spirit of Christmas, in the grand exchange, we are the recipient and Jesus, the Emmanuel is our greatest gift, a gift for humanity.Following this line of thought, if every Christmas is an active remembering also of the “sharing in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our own humanity” ( Lit. Of the Eucharist, prepa-ration of the altar and gifts) then we need a beautiful and pure vessel to welcome the Messiah in our midst. The preparation must not only a superficial preparation but a preparation which include the conver-sion of mind and heart of people, with personal conviction but a communal effort and endeavour. That’s the role of the four weeks of Advent, a hopeful and joyful expectation of the divine gratuitousness. The true happiness brought by the season of Christmas would always lead us to the experience of the reality that directs us to the eternity. When we give peace, love and joy it is already the foretaste of the life we hope to share and live with the Divine Trinity. Hope this holy season we may welcome Christ in our home, just like the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we may draw our inspiration from the Blesssed child in Beth-lelem, to become our source of life and love.A Blessed Christmas to everyone!

and minerals that you can get from the milk solids and cocoa butter found in gourmet white choco-late. (http://www.ultimatechocolateshoppe.com)There may be ill effects as well; nevertheless, in moderation and when eaten with a balanced diet, chocolate can certainly be a delightful and delicious way to warm a heart and feel better. Happy holidays!

Bagong SantoNi Penelope Anne Torres

lihiyon.” Kaya hindi sapat ang pagiging relihiyoso lamang. Sabi nga sa kanta ni Bruno Mars (Na labis kong sinasang-ayunan) na “It will rain”; “There’s no religion that can save me.”

Relihiyon kontra RelasyonNi: Richard Ancheta

“Collegio”Ni Mary Joy Madula

“Oy! Walang limutan ah?” “Mamimiss kita.”

The Little Match Girl It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last eve-ning of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and darkness, a poor little girl with bare head and naked feet, roamed thru the streets. It is true she had on a pair of slippers when she left home, but they were not of much use. They were very large, so large, indeed, for they had belonged to her Moth-er and the poor little girl had lost them in running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling at a terrible rate.

One of the slippers she could not find, and a boy seized the other and ran away with it saying he could use it as a cradle when he had children of his own. So the little girl went on with her little naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried a number of matches, and had a bundle of them in her hands. No one had anything of her the whole day, nor had anyone given her even a penny. Shiv-ering with cold and hunger, she crept along, looking like the picture of misery. The snowflakes fell on her fair hair, which hung in curls on her shoulders, but she regarded them not.

Lights were shining from every window, and there was a savory smell of roast goose, for it was New-year’s eve yes, she re-membered that. In a corner, between two houses one of which pro-jected beyond the other, she sank down and huddled herself together. She had drawn her little feet under her, but could not keep off the cold. And she dared not go home, for she had sold no matches.

Her father would certainly beat her; besides, it was al-most as cold at home as here, for they had only the roof to cover them. Her little hands were almost frozen with the cold. Ah! Perhaps a burning match might be some good, if she could draw it from the bundle and strike it against the wall, just to warm her fingers. She drew one out- “scratch!” how it sputtered as it burnt. It gave a warm, bright light, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it. It was really a wonderful light. It seemed as though she was sitting by a large iron stove. How the fire burned! And seemed so beautifully warm that the child stretched out her feet as if to warm them, when, lo! The flame of the match went out!

The stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the half-burnt match in her hand. She rubbed another match on the wall. It burst into a flame, and where its light fell upon the wall it became as transparent as a veil, and she could see into the room. The table was covered with a snowy white table cloth on which stood a splendid dinner service and a steaming roast goose stuffed with apples and dried plums. And what was still more wonderful, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled across the floor, with a knife and fork in it’s to the little girl. Then the match went out, and there remained nothing but the thick, damp, cold wall before her.

She lighted another match, and then she found herself sitting under a beautiful Christmas tree. It was larger and more beautifully decorated than the one she had seen thru the rich merchant’s glass door. Thousands of tapers were burning upon the green branches, and colored pictures, like those she had seen in the show-windows, looked down upon it all. The little one stretched out her hand towards them, and the match went out.

The Christmas lights rose higher and higher till they looked to her like the stars in the sky. Then she saw a star fall, leaving behind it a bright streak of fire. “Someone is dying,” thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only one who had ever loved her, and who was now in Heaven had told her that when a star falls, a soul was going up to God.

She again rubbed a match on the wall, and the light shone round her; in the brightness stood her old grandmother, clear and shining, yet mild and loving in her appearance.

“Grandmother,” cried the little one, “O take me with you; I know you will go away when the match burns out; you will vanish like the warm stove, the roast goose, and the large glorious Christmas-tree.” And she made haste to light the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother there. And the matches glowed with a light that was brighter than the noon-day. And her grand-mother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and they both flew upwards in brightness and joy far above the earth, where there was neither cold nor hunger nor pain, for they were with God.

In the dawn of morning there lay the poor little one, with pale cheeks and smiling mouth, leaning against the wall. She had been frozen on the last evening of the year; and the New-year’s sun rose and shone upon a little child. The child still sat, holding the matches in her hand, one bundle of which was burnt.

“She tried to warm herself,” said some. No one imag-ined what beautiful things she had seen, nor into what glory had she entered with her grandmother, on New-year’s day. ( h t t p : / / c l a s s i c l i t . a b o u t . c o m / o d /christmasstoriesholiday/a/aa_littlematch.htm)

Priest Receives Birthday Gifts!

It was Fr. Jess’ birthday and was receiving gifts from the parishioners. The florist’s daughter gave her a box, she put it over her head and shook it. “Are they flowers?” asked the priest. The surprised girl replied, “How did you know, Father?” The priest knew the profession of the kids’ parents, so he could guess easily. Then another boy came with a box, Father Jess shook it and said, “Is it a pair of shoes?” The student asked, “How’d you know!” The priest knew because the kid’s family had a shoe store. Then Johnny, the son of a liquor store owner, came forward and the priest saw the box. It was leak-ing. “ah, I know just what it is,” the priest mused. He put his finger on the wet part and sucked the liquid. “ Is it wine?” he said. Johnny shook his head, “No.” Then he scraped the leaking box again with his finger, tasted it,

saying “Brandy?” Johnny replied “No!” “Is it perhaps Mass wine?” “No Father. It’s a puppy!” The priest felt like throwing up. He had been licking the puppy’s urine.

Reluctant School Boss The story is told about a despondent man who was being roused by his mother one early morning. “Son, it’s time to go to school,” mother said. “I don’t want to. I’d rather stay at home

and sleep. Besides, I don’t like the people there, and the people don’t like me either.” The mother gazed at him and told him: “My son, you should go back to school. I’ll give you two reasons why: first, you’re already 59 years old, and you are the school principal!”

Carry Your Cross Husband came from church, suddenly lifted his wife and carried her. Wife: Why? Did the priest tell you to be roman-tic like this? Husband: No! He told me to carry my cross!

The 31 year old Viloria holds a record of 32 wins including 19 knockouts and 3 loses over the 24 year old Marquez having 34 wins including 25 knockouts and 3 loses.

V i l o r i a knocked Marquez down at the end of the first round with a flash right hook to wreck Marquez making him tentative for the rest of the bout. The bout continued on until 4th and 5th round. Mar-quez landed a huge left hook to Viloria’s temple making him quiver, both having counter punches until

Viloria landed a left and right combination resulting to Marquez drop for the second time. Many experts consider Round 5 to be

“Round of the Year”.

Viloria got his right hand working once more and followed up with more body shots in 6th and 7th round, but Marquez scooted forward to trade again. Leaning to his right, Marquez tried to get his hook working and landed a handful, but Viloria seemed unaffected for the most part, and he resumed his usual at-tack, finishing strong with slick defense.

In round 8 both men carried out in-telligent strategies, with Viloria setting longer-range traps and

Marquez trying to get inside in a safe way. A series of left hands from Marquez made Viloria move. More hook-trading led to ex-changes and a flurry of right hands from Vilo-ria in the 9th, Looking tired, Viloria tried to prance away but was met by Marquez’ left hand and the Mexican closed very strong with a big combination.

The bout continued until round 10, Viloria dominated the round connecting a left hook haymaker. Marquez was repeatedly hit to the head forcing Mar-quez’s trainer Robert Garcia to throw the towel from Mexican corner with the ref-eree David Mendoza and stopping the bout 1:01 of the round.

With the help of its coach “Bob (Bowman), Mi-chael Phelps “flying fish” made his way off to swimming, Thus of all Olympic history, he is the most decorated Olympian ever, on legs built strong with one kick set after another, he is walking away while still at the summit.

In his Olympics tourney, he is the most decorated swimmer with eight medals in Athens, col-lecting six gold and two bronze at the age of 19 in 2004, his “Hello, World” moment earned eight more in Beijing with all gold in 2008, a master at the height of his powers, and now six more in London hav-ing four gold and two silver with a

total of 22 medals and the highest record holder –being capable of carrying on after hardship and be-ing liable to make mistakes, Phelps ended having three straight gold.

Bowman smiled thinking about the Phelps he has known, since he was a kid in a Speedo playing games at the pool and how much he has grown up. At age 27, he has matured before a nation’s eyes.

He could keep taking part in competing on a more limited scale and try for Rio de Janeiro in 2016, but there is nothing left to prove, no worlds left to conquer, and no meaningful records left to break.
