1 Service Processor Rebuild RequirementsThis guide describes the content organization and instructions for the HP 3PAR Service Processorsoftware rebuild. When replacing a Service Processor (SP), an appropriate level of software must be installed.Specific settings must be restored to permit the SP to add or communicate with a HP 3PAR StoreServStorage System.

IMPORTANT: When you rebuild an SP, you must add all applicable HP 3PAR OS and SP patchesbefore you attach an HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage System to the SP.

All field-replaceable unit (FRU) SPs have a base-image and some level of SP operating systemsoftware previously installed. When an SP is shipped from HP 3PAR, a sticker is attached to therear of the SP to indicate the installed SP software level. The replacement SP does not necessarilyrequire a complete rebuild of the settings and can be restored during the Moment of Birth (MOB)or an upgrade of an SP.

NOTE: SP 2.4.1 and later releases do not include any client HP 3PAR OS levels. To install HP3PAR OS software, refer to “Installing HP 3PAR Operating System Files” (page 129).

NOTE: For more information about replacing or upgrading an SP, refer to the Service Processorreplacement procedures in the appropriate HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage System Maintenancemanual.

Use the requirements table to verify the correct software version before continuing with the task.A 3PAR Service Processor Rebuild Ship Kit includes the following software media:• SP Base Image CD or DVD (for versions that are earlier than SP 4.1)

• Service Processor Software CDs or DVDs

• HP 3PAR OS Release TPD Level Distribution CDs or DVDs

• SP and OS patch CDs or DVDsThe SP configuration information is necessary to configure the newly built SP. The information canbe copied to the replacement SP from a previously saved SP configuration file (SP Rescue Data)or retrieved manually. The SP Rescue Data file can be obtained from the replaced SP if it is still operational and beforeit is shut down. The rescue file includes the SP IP, netmask, gateway, and storage system IPaddresses. If the SP is inoperable, use the following methods to obtain the SP setting informationfrom the rescue file:

• Use a service laptop or computer to access SPOCC via a connection portal and retrieve theSP setting information.

NOTE: If the SP is inoperable, the rescue file must be obtained manually from a STaTS.

• Refer to an Installation Checklist or the Systems Assurance document containing the SP settinginformation.

NOTE: There are many other recommended and optional settings. Use the SP ConfigurationInformation Worksheet when manually gathering information.

NOTE: See the HP 3PAR OS Configuration Matrix for additional platform level support.

The serial port settings are as follows:• SuperMicro II, SuperMicro I, Wintec, Dell 750, and Dell 650: 38400 bps/8/1/n/Xon-Xoff

• ProLiant DL360e and ProLiant DL320e: 57600 bps/8/1/n/Xon-Xoff

5

Page 6: 3)View

NOTE: For a SuperMicro II that is loading an SP 4.1 DVD, the BIOS option “Continue C.R. afterPOST” must be set to "ON" in order to use the console through the serial port throughout theprocess of installing from the DVD.

NOTE: A cable with adapter (P/N 180-0055) should be connected to the SP. Disconnect theEthernet cable from the RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter attached to the SP (P/N 180-0059).

NOTE: For more information about connecting the maintenance PC to a controller node, referto the applicable HP 3PAR Storage system maintenance manual.

NOTE: For more information about modifications to the SP and known issues, see the HP 3PARService Processor Software 4.1.x Release Notes, HP 3PAR Service Processor Software 4.1.x ServiceNotes, HP 3PAR Service Processor Software 2.5.x Release Notes, and HP 3PAR Service ProcessorSoftware 2.5.x Service Notes, as appropriate for the version of the SP software that you arerunning.

The following information corresponds to each specific connection type.

EthernetTo use Ethernet for retrieving a backup file from a Connection Portal (CP), the following is required:

• An IP address to assign to the Service Processor

• Subnet network mask

• Gateway IP address to access the public network

• CP IP address (if it is not an HP 3PAR standard CP)

Modem

NOTE: Modem support is discontinued in SP 4.1.0.

If you are not using the HP 3PAR standard CP, the following information is required to retrieve abackup file from a CP using a modem:

• IP address of CP PPP port

• CP phone number

• Prefix to dial an outside lineThe following procedure retrieves a backup file from a CP using a modem:1. When prompted, select the specific SP rescue file to restore configuration to the Service

Processor. The file name syntax is as follows:SPxxxxx.RESCUE.YYYYMMDD.HHMMSS

2. Continue MOB with date and time settings. The Service Processor then reboots.

8 Installing HP 3PAR Operating System FilesThis chapter describes how to install HP 3PAR OS files and add an HP 3PAR StoreServ Storagesystem after rebuilding a Service Processor.

IMPORTANT: Before you attach an HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage System to the system, make surethat all HP 3PAR OS and SP patches have been applied.

Verifying HP 3PAR Operating System FilesAfter completing the rebuild of the SP software, HP 3PAR OS files must first be installed on the SPin order to communicate and add an HP 3PAR Storage system.Determine the HP 3PAR Operating System software version by referring to past SP or systemconfiguration files or by connecting the maintenance PC to the controller node to establish a CLIinteractive session before installing HP 3PAR OS files.

NOTE: If necessary, contact HP 3PAR Support Center for additional support relating to past SPor system configuration information.

To connect the maintenance PC to a controller node:1. Insert a standard Category 5 cable into the maintenance port of the controller node.

NOTE: A cable with adapter (P/N 180-0055) should be connected to the SP. Disconnectthe Ethernet cable from the RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter attached to the SP (P/N 180-0059).

NOTE: For more information about connecting the maintenance PC to a controller node, refer to the applicable HP 3PAR Storage system maintenance manual.

2. Log in to the SP and establish a CLI interactive session with the connecting controller node.3. Issue the showversion -b command to verify the current HP 3PAR OS version.

9 Restoring the Virtual SPThe HP 3PAR Service Processor (SP) is available in both physical and virtual versions for the SP4.1 release. An advantage of the virtual SP (VSP) is the ability to take snapshots that you can thenuse to restore the virtual SP to a previous state if needed. For this reason, a good practice is totake a snapshot after deploying and installing a virtual SP.You can also rebuild by using the original OVF file or a newer OVF file that contains all currentpatches for the SP.

IMPORTANT: When you deploy an SP, you must add all applicable HP 3PAR OS and SP patchesbefore you attach an HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage System to the SP.

To restore the virtual SP by using a snapshot:1. In the VMware vSphere Client, right-click your virtual SP, point to Snapshot, and then click

Snapshot Manager.2. The hierarchy that appears in the left navigation pane shows the virtual SP snapshots that have

been taken. Select the snapshot that you want to restore, and then click Go to.3. When you are prompted to revert to the snapshot that you selected, click Yes.

WARNING! Do not install the VSP on the same StoreServ 7000 array because it may lead tothe inability of properly managing the array when connectivity to the storage is unavailable.Provision the VSP on a VMware server and ensure the VSP uses the local boot disk of the assignedVMware server and does not boot from the StoreServ 7000 LUNs.

CAUTION: VMware vMotion is not a supported application. Do not use vMotion to migrate theVSP from one physical server to another. Using vMotion may cause communication failure andinterrupt system service.
