A note for visitors: Were thankful that you could join us for worship today, and wepray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin. If youhave any questions dont hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice ofdividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goalof worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be a

community that understands the specic gifts and challenges that children bring. Weencourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with yourchildren, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to takeadvantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through theKitchen off of the entryway.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the service

begins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply, and reect upon the past week. When youre ready, you might say the following prayeror one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace andof supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness ofheart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindledaffections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christour Lord. Amen.

Grant, O Lord, that the course of this world may be peaceably governed by yourprovidence; and that your Church may joyfully serve you in condence and serenity;through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, oneGod, for ever and ever. Amen.

    All sit.

A Reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

Thus says the Lord: In a time of favor I have answered you, in a day of salvation I havehelped you; I have kept you and given you as a covenant to the people, to establish theland, to apportion the desolate heritages; saying to the prisoners, Come forth, to thosewho are in darkness, Appear. They shall feed along the ways, on all bare heights shall betheir pasture; they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall smitethem, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them. And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be raised up. Lo, theseshall come from afar, and lo, these from the north and from the west, and these from theland of Syene. Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, intosinging! For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his aficted. But Zion said, The Lord has forsaken me, my Lord has forgotten me. Can a womanforget her sucking child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have graven you on the palms of

my hands; your walls are continually before me.

    Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5

A Reading from Pauls First letter to the Church in Corinth.

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries ofGod. Moreover it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. But with me it is avery small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge

myself. I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is theLord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before theLord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose thepurposes of the heart. Then every man will receive his commendation from God.

    Holy Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34All stand.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to _______.People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love theother, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and

mammon. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat orwhat you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more thanfood, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow norreap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of morevalue than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the eld, how they grow;they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed likeone of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the eld, which today is alive and tomorrowis thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore

do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shallwe wear? For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows thatyou need them all. But seek rst his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these thingsshall be yours as well. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will beanxious for itself. Let the days own trouble be sufcient for the day.

Gospeller: The Gospel of the LordPeople: Praise to you, Lord Christ

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

    and was made man.For our sake he was crucied under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

The Sanctus: S-130Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

Please stand or kneel at this time, as best helps you to pray.

Holy and gracious Father: In your innite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one ofus, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, aperfect sacrice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ tookbread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, andsaid, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance ofme. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrice of praise andthanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,

the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we mayfaithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; andat the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in theunity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

    AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

    A Note on Todays Readings

Proper 3: Sunday closest to May 25Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. Jesus tells us that anxiety arises from making the things ofthis world central to our lives rather than keeping God as the center. Jesus is not ignoringthe importance of our material nature, but our material needs must not come before God.

In the rst reading, the prophet responding to Israels release from exile sings of Godsunlimited love. Gods love is as intimate as a mothers love for her nursing child. We are sodear to God that it is as though our names are inscribed in the palms of Gods hands.Paul tells the Corinthians that church leaders are primarily servants and stewards, not

powerful spiritual gures. It is the body of the church, its members as a whole, that is lledwith spiritual gifts and set apart by God, not just its leaders.
