ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OPERATIONS

Conveyor belts take a lot of abuse and are in need of ongoing maintenance. Inspired by the needs of one mining company, 3M developed a fast-curing, cold-bond adhesive that could repair damaged areas and get belts back in service quickly, reducing downtime and improving throughput. 3M™ Scotchkote™ Urethane Elastomer 80 XRG 539 has since been launched globally and has become well accepted in the mining industry.

Using partnerships to bring energy to remote locations, 3M partnered with two major technology companies to develop cost-competitive solar power. The end result of this collaboration was a comprehensive solar power system that concentrates light through a receiver tube containing working fluid that can be used for process operations or to generate reliable energy.

SOLAR ENERGY FOR REMOTE LOCATIONSCONVEYOR BELT REPAIR

Due to high noise levels in their mill, a mining site had to restrict workers to four-hour shifts in the facility. Although workers were using 3M’s best hearing protection, the company was looking for an engineered solution to reduce noise at the source. Teaming with 3M, they evaluated a product used to reduce noise inside commercial aircraft. Once they applied 3M™ E-A-R™ Thermal Acoustic Foam to their equipment, noise levels were reduced, which allowed employees to work longer shifts and greatly increase productivity.

At one of the largest underground copper mines, studies showed that up to 29% of workers could be suffering from hearing loss even while wearing earplugs. 3M developed the E-A-Rfit™ Validation System to help ensure that earplugs were fitting, being applied and functioning properly. Not only is this innovation helping reduce hearing damage, it is also an excellent tool for training workers on how to use hearing protection products properly.
