BIM 3D Clash Detection and 4D Schedule Simulation • Clash Detection

• 4D Simulation

• Civil 3D® for 4D

• Additional Resources

Navisworks® Manage 3D Clash Detection Tips

Clash tests are run against different objects in the selection tree, including files, object selections, properties or search/selection sets.

• Maximize the use of search and selection sets to isolate specific objects in the model

• Maximize the use of custom clash rules to eliminate false hits

• Adjust clash types and tolerances for each type of test

• Run more detailed clash tests against smaller object selections

• Create template files to expedite model creation on larger projects

For more details on the Clash Detecting tools, clash batches and rules please refer to Navisworks Manage 2012 User Guide Chapter 15 Locate and Manage Interferences page 669.

Navisworks® Manage 4D Simulation Tips

Understanding the interoperability of all software along with the organizational hierarchy will assist with the ease of linking tasks with objects.

• Use rules to assist with auto linking schedule tasks to objects in the model

• Maximize the use of search and selection sets to isolate specific objects or tasks

• Create new task types that will better convey the story. TimeLiner>Configure

• Keep the audience in mind when setting the overlay text. You can find the settings in the Simulation Setting Dialog Box >Overlay Text. Codes located on page 631 of the User Guide.

• Simulate- Adjust the start date to view a specific moment in time to analysis where construction is without having to play and pause

For more details on 4D simulation please refer to Navisworks Manage 2012 User Guide Chapter 14 Simulate Construction Scheduling page 607

AutoCAD® Civil® 3D Tips for 4D

It would be a luxury at the beginning of the design to know how a project is going to be built or even a schedule. At the point when the information does come finding the right tools to assist in producing a 4D simulation without having to recreate the model or manipulate an existing model to accommodate is important.

• Split regions- Breaking up a corridor for Assists in dividing the corridors when putting together

• Corridor Solids- Came out on labs in October 2011. This tool adds volume to the corridors to allow easier separation of the subgrades. This assists in coordination and clash detection. http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/civil3D_corridor_solids/

• Viewing surfaces from AutoCAD® Civil® 3D in Navisworks® Manage.

• Create a new surface style with triangles

• When creating pipe networks keep in mind the way you label pipes and structures. You will want to easily create selection sets that will line up with either the schedule task or the clash sets.

• Data Shortcuts are key. As you divide surfaces to create the different stages of construction ensure that you are naming them so they are easily identifiable when it comes to linking them to the schedule. (Mitchell had close to 100 surfaces)

• Always test files in Navisworks® Manage when starting to verify what is being seen, how it is coming in, and if the appropriate information is there.

Additional Resources AutoCAD® Civil® 3D and Revit Structure

• Bridge Modeler- Creates simple bridges from Civil 3D corridor objects. http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/civil3d_bridge/

• Revit Structure Subscription- Includes a bridge modeler which allows for easy import and export out of Civil 3D to use the corridor objects to create bridges in Revit Structure http://subscription.autodesk.com/

• Point Cloud Feature Extraction - Provides tools to assist in the processing of point cloud, allowing to extract civil specific shapes and geometry. http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/civil3d_pointcloud/

• Shape Extraction for AutoCAD - Plug-in allows you to import, load and extract shape and geometry information from point cloud data. http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/shape_extraction_autocad/
