Dear Friends,
Our organization is driven by this critical mission. Each year, I believe that it is important that we take time to evaluate our successes, via our mission.
By all accounts, 2016 was the best year yet for the Biggs Museum.
In the last year, the Biggs has proudly provided excellent, transformative programming to thousands of disadvantaged school children, hundreds of community groups and nearly 25,000 visitors. We hosted record crowds for exhibitions such as The Saint John’s Bible, and programs, such as the 1st Annual Happy Holidays Dover and the Collection Connection: Members Brunch and Lecture (about our newly acquired by Feke). In addition, the Biggs Museum was honored to have been November’s selected Charity for Gals That Give, an organization of women who host
quality exhibitions and educational programming.
niche, and we are pleased to have Brent join us from his most recent post at the American Alliance
As we look forward, the Biggs Museum has a major milestone ahead. From May 2017-September 2018 we will celebrate our 25th Anniversary with a variety of special events and exhibitions including an exhibition of Ansel Adams: Early Works and Christo & Jeanne-Claude: The Tom Golden Collection – to mention only two.
None of this would have been possible without the support of friends like you. On behalf of the
serve the community through our mission, and positioning us to have yet another fantastic year!
Sincerely,

Many know the artist Frank E. Schoonover (1877-1972) for his narrative paintings and illustrations, but it is little known that between 1920 and 1960, the artist designed a series of stained glass windows for the
Immanuel Church Highlands in Wilmington, Delaware. This fall the Biggs was thrilled to broaden its representation of Schoonover’s work through the acquisition of two preparatory sketches for these windows. The sketches eloquently depict the Annunciation and the road the wise men travelled to visit the Christ Child.
Each window Schoonover designed passed through a four stage production process beginning with sketches, like the ones now in the Biggs’ collection, followed by a watercolor cartoon, a full-scale charcoal on paper, and,
worked closely with D’Ascenzo Studios and The Willet Stained Glass Company, both in Philadelphia, to carefully plan each detail of
who were all members of the Immanuel congregation. The two sketches in the Biggs’ collection were created for windows sponsored by the Law family, in memory of Margaret Callan Law, and J. Thompson Brown.
Due to the inherently geometric nature of the medium, Schoonover’s window designs prove a stylistic break from the loose brushwork for which he is most known. In the sketch for the landscape scene, Schoonover embraced the
linearity of stained-glass by contrasting curves and jutting angles in a tumult of sky. This artful juxtaposition is evocative of the vaporous clouds and fog that permeate his most expressive paintings. In his Annunciation scene , Schoonover, in typical fashion, opted to represent the scene not as a booming drama, but as a quiet moment of realization. In lieu of a theatrical display of surprise, Schoonover’s Mary demonstrates her monumental emotional and physical shift with a gentle gesture towards her heart.
As the primary and largest representative of Schoonover’s work in the country, acquisitions like these sketches are crucial additions to the Biggs’ collection. Given the story of their production and uniqueness within Schoonover’s work, their presence in the collection allows the Biggs to tell the full story of the artist’s life through the examination and exhibition of his own work.

He is a freelance writer, having published extensively with Letters from CAMP Rehoboth and the Washington Blade.
The stunning Aloft installation(pictured) “sold” him on the notion of working at the Biggs – especially since it leads one through the Biggs’ most impressive collection.
